Looking at buying a 997... Is a Hartech repaired .1 as good
Discussion
Hi
I have a limited budget of around £40k. This gets me into a 997.2 with 50k miles and a basic spec. or, i've seen a few 997.1's like this:

Which should I go for?
Thanks in advance!

The reputation of full Hartech 997.1 engine rebuilds is very good - always worth checking what, exactly, was done by Hartech and what warranty there is. However, at this price level, I'd tend to agree with others that making the reach for the 997.2 is, for various reasons, probably the way to go.
I too think that car is a bit steep. Generally, Nikasil lined cylinders and post-2006 IMS Gen1 cars are an incredible bargain these days as they don't command that much of a premium over normal cars. Hence the reason why I think this is priced a bit high.
It's swings and roundabouts between Gen1 and Gen2 cars. To my mind there is almost nothing in it exterior-looks wise but interior the Gen2 car is a bit nicer. The Gen1 has a noticeably better sound to it with or without PSE and performance-wise, despite what the numbers say, you really won't notice the difference.
When you add it all up you can see why people with good rebuilds want to hang on to them these days.

So, best to hunt out a decent 977.2 rather than a 997.1 that has already had the engine sorted.
Just to be clear, a 997.1 that has had a full Hartech rebuild, with a warranty, is going to be decent. I think the car you linked to carries a premium (at least in the eyes of the seller) because of the extras like the aero kit. Thanks Digga
Understood - I suppose I just now need to get my head around the benefits of buying from a Porsche dealer over an independent. I don;t tend to do add-on warranties and rely on good servicing & running at risk. However, many seem to talk about the Porsche warranty as if you'd be a fool not to have one. At the same time, the 997.2 seems to be reliable???
Cheers

Darren - usual thing - buy the ticket take the ride - and the warranty is expensive. However, I bought my car from main dealer (997.1) with 2 years warranty. The paperwork showed a new clutch, and various other things that had been done to bring it up to their standard for selling - without checking it was around 11k of work. I'm sure there was some main dealer trousers down to the warranty insurance in that quote, but that was without VAT etc.Understood - I suppose I just now need to get my head around the benefits of buying from a Porsche dealer over an independent. Since I've had the car...........a year..........it has had 5k work done under warranty (i'm very particular about getting it perfect)
So all in - 16k of work in the last 2 years.......to bring it as near perfect as I can find anything to be done.
That is without any engine work as I don't have any problems.
That's a 55k miles car
I personally have spend a few grand on getting the bodywork perfect, interior and wheels.
So - for me - warranty, although a slightly bitter pill to swallow - will be getting renewed when it's due
If you can get into a 997.2 (which your budget can), get a 997.2. No brainer really. The noise (or lack of in standard form) can be sorted with a PSE and H&S bypass.
I'm sure you can get a well optioned 50k miler for under £40k, just have to be patient as I guess not many people are selling at this time of year. Don't be afraid to buy private either, if you're not confident on what to look for you can always get an inspection.
Aerokit looks naff on a Carrera IMO, spoilers should be for the GT cars.

agreed - I'd happily buy that Hartech car (and immediately remove the naff red S and body colour the front lip)for £30k

It's also worth noting that this appears to have the M030 Sport Suspension option, even thought the dealer doesn't seem to have spotted it. Normally there'd be three buttons on the console in the order Spolier > Dampers > Sport, but this just has Spolier > Sport (which denotes that the kit was retrofitted after sale and not as a factory fit option, so this would instantly alert me to check for possible accident damage coverups unless it was fitted by an OPC)

Hi. I too bought a 997.1 S from main stealer last March and would be interested to know what you had done under warranty since. I've had new a new loom for memory mirror and waterpump plus associated belts replaced. Also got supplying dealer to,contribute 50% to ne bumpstops and a track rod end. Mine had spark plugs, drive belt, new horn, new key, 2 new tyres, coolant pipes, air con rad, cam chain seal tensioner, Geo, brake fluid, air con regas in prep before pick up. Should imagine that was a tidy bill. Paid 30k for it with PCCB, short shift, sports suspension and PSE being the main attractions on 43k miles. Done 6k in it since.
blimey! lots done. THe 11k before I bought it bill was a long one - I have it though though - i'll find it and update. The few K since I bought it was new rear exhausts. They found a broken bracket and said they had to replace both sides. Get that checked when in warranty as it was a big bill I believe. Also had a door handle malfunction.Nothing too major but glad i'm not paying
