I bought a 2015 Golf Blue Motion a few months ago and was surprised when the washer fluid ran out last week. There was no indication/warning light on the dash so I assumed the bulb was faulty as there was no light when I switched the ignition on either. As it was still under warranty, I booked the car in to the VW dealer, and was told that this particular car doesn't have a low fluid warning light! Is this correct? I thought all modern cars had this as standard. It is impossible to see how much fluid is in the reservoir as it's buried in the bowels of the engine bay.

On my last couple of VWs (MK5 R32 and Scirocco) you needed to spec the Winter Pack to get the low washer fluid warning as it wasn't standard equipment.

Just top up your washer fluid when you do your regular checks such as oil level.

I'd also check that they topped up the indicator fluid whilst it was serviced as well. A few of my cars ran out without letting me know!

Why thank you for your very helpful comment. That's what makes this website so useful.

The car was booked in because I thought there was a faulty warning light and didn't want to start pulling the dash out to replace a bulb when it was under warranty.

Many thanks. I wasn't aware of that as all my recent cars have had the warning light as standard. It seems pretty stupid that there isn't a warning light when you can't visually check the level.

I have a 2015 golf and I seem to be filling it up with screen wash once a week right now time of year I guess , the washer bottle does seem very small , and it washes the headlights to often , but you can clearly see most of the washer bottle under the bonnet if you use a coloured screen wash you can see clearly when it needs a top up

It’s an idiosyncracy of Golfs & possibly VW’s, they never have to my knowledge unless you order the winter pack as noted.

A royal pain this time of year.

Odd as my MK1 1984 Sierra had one!!!

Many thanks for the useful replies. It does seem strange that it isn't fitted as standard. After all how much extra would it cost in the great scheme of things?

That’s just it, the word “extra”, manufacturers want to sell extras & as has been said the only way on some models to get the low warning is to pay extra for the winter pack, I think the winter pack gives a bigger screen wash bottle as well.

The bigger bottle (5.5 litre) is fitted when the car has headlight washers, which are part of the winter pack or standard with Xenons.

As I said, you cannot visibly check the level of the fluid and I expected there to be a warning light as the handbook shows that there is. It was only when it ran out that I realised it wasn't working because it ain't there.

As said I will now top up weekly.

(Incidentally I'm well in excess of 55 and absolutely hate all the electronic computerisation fitted to cars nowadays.)

Just top it up when you do the weekly check then?

I've noticed the Octavia goes through washer fluid much quicker than the old A5 did (although that had a bigger reservoir) - both have warnings when it's low, but mine gets topped up weekly either way, with a very approximate mix of pre-mixed screenwash

All Mk7s have it standard apart from the S and Bluemotion.

Historically it was added by the winter pack but not so much these days

VW must be a bunch of cheap tts to not fit a part that's standard on many cars.

They've shown themselves with the whole emmisions scandle as being a company prepared to do almost anything to save money and deceive customers.

I would assume any modern car bought in the last couple of years would have standard fitment for this kind of thing.

What stuff comes with the car that yuh could easily do without? Auto lights, auto windscreen wipers, that kind of thing? Yet a simple level warning that is pertinent to winter safety is left out.
