I've had my 2006 335d for 3 years now, and have put on 50k miles. I really find myself wanting a 335i cab. Then again when I do my trip back to see family (Leeds) from London, I really enjoy having a diesel because I can keep it at a good speed and not get punished for fuel economy.

Has anyone swapped their 335d for a 335i? Did you regret it or was it the best decision you made?

Economy isn't too bad on the 335i, keep in mind the cab is heavier though.

I've seen 32mpg+ on a run in mine.

My dad has a 2008 335i cab with the excellent DCT gearbox. On a good run it can achieve around 30ish mpg bearing in mind the cab is heavier than the coupe/saloon. But still not too bad considering it's a petrol twin turbo. Sound with roof down is nice as you'd imagine and the ride is good. What about the S5 cab, bit more power than the 335 but it is heavier.

Thanks guys, is the road tax £500+?

Is there any work I should ensure is done before I buy one?

I guess I just fancy a change, and should just do it. I heard one start up and it just sounded much better than my diesel sadly.

I went from a 2007 335d to a 2010 z4 35i.

Engine sounds nicer, yes. It’s quicker overall, but not massively so. can get 30+ on a long m-way run.

Going from e9x 335d to e93335i wouldn’t be enough of a change for me - sure, the roof comes off, but it’s the same view out of the windscreen, same dash, etc... and it’s something like a 250kg weight penalty for that roof!

Considering that, if you do go for it, I wouldn’t buy one with the 19” wheels, they may look good, but it’ll be crack city... frown

How about a z4? wink

That extra weight is something to think about, do you not miss the 335d? I'm just used to its power delivery. When I drive other peoples cars they just feel signficantly slower wobble

What makes the 335d feel good day-to-day is it’s linear response, it doesn’t feel much different to a big n/a in how it performs. The 35i engine is very similar in that respect too, just that the rev. ranges are different. That said, I don’t miss the 335d at all! (well, maybe the economy). I went from doing a 60/day commute to zero commute/once a week to airport runs, my overall mileage in my cars is now around 6k/year. No point having a diesel for that, so I went back to petrol.

As good as a 335d is, (and it is), it’s not in the same league above 60mph as my current two. Put it this way, I wouldn’t buy another 335d instead of the two I have, unless circumstances change drastically. (To be fair, the z4 isn’t in the same league either).

At the end of the day, just go & test-drive one. IMO the dct box works well with the 35i engine, the road fund should be £300ish on a 2009+ dct 35i whether that’s e93 or z4 (e89). Neither are out & out sports cars, they’re quick cruisers/tourers. Z4 was slightly more snap-oversteer happy in the wet, but that’s the shorter wheelbase. Only you can decide which one is right for you... smile

Few threads like this at the moment.

Went 435d to 435i and have zero regrets. Do it.
