Hi
I have a 2011 530d m sport with 60,000 miles. I've had it two years and it's a great car. I've 3 kids and I've been thinking about moving to an SUV. I've looked at Ford Edge, Skoda Kodiaq and LR D sport. The price of financing one of these vehicles hovers around 3/4 k deposit and then 400 a month
Alternatively I can get a VW Touraeg 2013 for 16k and this would do the same job??
Any advice

A 2.0 TDI 4wd Kodiak will work out at around £7k over 2 years on a lease.

Which is probably a little more than what the Touareg will lose BUT the Touareg may or may not have a warranty, may need repairs, a big service, will attract tax, MOT, consumables whereas you could actually avoid all of this with a leased Kodiak.

The opportunity cost delta will probably be around £30/month at 2.5% which most wouldn't ignore either.

You may well be able to save money by keeping the VW for longer though obviously but at that budget it will have quite a few miles to start with, while being significantly thirstier...

Kodiaqs are available with 4k off right now, either pre reg or through carwow. I think the Karoq has harmed the sales.

Used every time for me - you could get much more car for the same money, or the same amount of car for a fraction of the price. Running costs won't come close to the cost of depreciation from new.

Have you considered getting an estate instead?

There is often very little in it for a variety of reasons. But not always of course.

SUV are more practical than Estates IME with 3 kids.

Thanks guys.
I love the 530d but getting the kids in and out an SUV would be easier. The Kodiaq sportline is out with a deal of around 3500 and 399 a month. It's tempting...but so is a Touareg for 15k

The Touareg although not as rugged as the MK1, MK2's is a great car and with the 3.0tdi is leagues above the smaller Kodiaq / Tiguan / Q5 / Arteca with 2.0tdi's. You will notice the difference in refinement and ride also space.

I wouldn't Finance a VAG 2.0tdi SUV as above but look for the good lease deals and you should be paying £200-£300

Stick to 530d or Touareg.

Look at the Peugeot 3008 SUV, best in class and would suit your needs perfectly smile stick with anything above the GT line as you get the nice stuff like the LED lights, GT is auto only (new 8 speed box available now) with the 180ps 2ltr diesel engine.

The 530d estate is a big family car and one serves my friends' 5 member family admirably.

If you want bigger, what about an X5?

Thanks folks
I like the idea of a 4 wheel drive as the snow and where I live near had me over a ditch.
I've also looked at Quattro A6/7 and L R disco 4 as they are hovering around that 18k mark.
I d say it'll be a Touareg though...

For snow you want winter tyres, 4wd is not going to massively help you.

I'd say take a look at the Grand Cherokee Overland with Mercedes hardware you get a good full size 4x4 for good money & you won't have to sacrifice your space/refinement that you have now.

Super, never considered the Grand Jeep Cherokee but they look a good option. 3.0 engine and lots of space. Have proved a Kodiaq sportline but it's 3k down and 370 a month.
There are well kitted out GJC for about 18.5k 2014 plate and they look a lovely jeep. Thanks for the advice

Tiguan 2.0TSI or the 2.0biturbo TDI. It's a decent step up in refinement (road noise) and ride quality over a kodiaq/karoq despite the internet thinking that they are exactly the same car and VAG cars on the same platform are copy and pastes

Yes with an 18k budget you should get a nice Overland:

Or you can get a lower mileage Limited Plus:

If you're not going to the spannering yourself make sure you have someone lined up to look after it - they can make LandRover products seem reliable and some parts availability is iffy, especially RHD specific stuff.
