911 (997 Carrera) Tyre choice.
Discussion
Hello Chaps
Just fancied another 911. I have bought a cheapish 997, 2005, Tiptronic, 63k miles. All seems pretty good but it has some dodgy sounding tyres on it. Fronts are as new but branded "Bryway" rears 3/4 worn "Kumho,s".
Not sure that I feel comfortable running about with these on. I can afford a matching set of new branded tyres, has anybody got any recommendations ?
Many thanks,
Regards,
John

Hmm. I wouldn't use 'sub-brand' tyres on a car capable of 180mph, even if you never get near that in the real world. The 997 is designed to hit a very high bar on handling and ride, and to put cheap rubber on like that is just plain dangerous, IMO.
Further, using different brands on each end could severely affect the balance of the car, to say nothing of making me worried where the previous owner also cut corners.
That all said, I agree with the other comment RE Pilot Sport tyres. My 997 had P-Zero Rosso's on when I bought it and the difference when I switched to PS2's was like night and day. Bit harsher sounding, but when you're pressing on the grip is fantastic. Well worth the outlay.

You need N rated tyres, I prefer Michelin but Pirelli etc are good. Remember the rubber is what connects you to the road. Cheap tyres, cheap handling / performance under braking / in the wet etc.Just fancied another 911. I have bought a cheapish 997, 2005, Tiptronic, 63k miles. How come?
N rated tyres are only required to comply with Porsche warranty. Without warranty, the choice is yours.Personally, I'd go for MPSS, MPS4S or Cup 2s...
Remember the Super Sports? they were good tyres.
The compound and/or construction is tweeked very slightly depending on the tyre. I doubt us mere mortals would be able to tell the difference, but Porsche (or rather their insurance underwriters) have, I believe, used a non N rated tyres to wriggle out of a warranty claim. Which means more servicing and money for them...
