Last post by you was last July accusing me of not being a car enthusiast..Everybody who knows me will testify i'm the biggest cat enthusiast they know of.
Next post from you is today with another sly remark..You have a total of 47 posts and you contribute nothing to Pistonheads, just one trolling remark every eight months. If you can't contribute in a positive manner to any thread i suggest you go and troll elsewhere.

Anyway.....
With regard to the transmission debate and whether it’s a good time to buy....
To be honest I bought into the theory that the manual would be ‘ better’ than the pdk...
I drove a pdk 991 RS last week and enjoyed it miles more than I thought I would, having read all about how good the manuals are.. I hasten to add the manual that I drove was a 997.2 4.0 RS.
So... I’m now buying a pdk car rather than a manual....

I agree the PDK is brilliant , my . was the first non manual Porsche I have bought and it is brilliant . Spoke to a guy at a Porsche coffee morning who said the same. Due to PH talk he bought a manual .2 GT3 , and hardly uses it as prefers his Cayman PDK , wishes he had got PDK on GT3 .

I must admit, I prefer PDK on the GT3, i feel that with the car being so fast on road that not having to worry about changing gears allows me to further appreciate all the other aspects of the car.Saying that, on the 981 Spyder with less power I can’t imagine it being as enjoyable without a manual gearbox.

997 GT3RS 4.0 and 991.2 GT3 whilst both being 'manuel' are chalk and cheese. With regard to the transmission debate and whether it’s a good time to buy....

I'd urge you to drive the manual 991.2 GT3. I have 991.1 RS, 991.2 GT3 and 997 4.0 RS. Done lots of miles in all of them. The clutch and gearbox in the 997 4.0 RS is great but I accept it's an acquired taste and really divides opinion. Personally I love it. The clutch and box in the 991.2 GT3 is much more user friendly. I've run my 991.2 GT3 as a daily because of how easy the box is and how light the clutch is. That said the PDK is by far quicker for track work, but I accept now where near as engaging. With regard to the transmission debate and whether it’s a good time to buy....

You must be driving at a hell of a pace to find changing gear that much of a distraction. It’s a key part of the driving experience for me....and I feel I drive it as fast as I dare on public roads!
Took the words out of my mouth I appreciate your views fellas!
To be honest , I can see both arguments...
I had a drive of an Audi RS3 and I loved the auto / paddle shift in that...
Must say that I was well impressed with the PDK RS
Anyway, I know I’m not supposed to buy for this reason, but I’ve decided to go for an RS due to the differential in residuals of the the previous generation cars... Plus I like the crazy look of the RS !
Has anyone got any tales of woe or near miss stories when buying one of these second hand....?
Whether it’s from an Indy specialist or an OPC , is one or other more trustworthy / regulated with regards to whether it’s been repaired/ re painted / over revved , and whether it’s declared ? How do you know about these minor details !?

Fair point - tried to have drive of the manual, but have you ever tried to get a dealer to let you test drive one ? Reading Left me in no doubt that I couldn’t have a test drive of theirs... I didn’t have any mates with one of these to have a go of unfortunately... !So tell me you think the 991.1 RS is the best.... Please!!
I have a 997 GT3 RS 4.0 and a 991 GT3 RS.1. The two cars offer two distinctly different driving experiences and it would be wrong to say that the one is better than the other. The 991 is clinical in its approach and going round the track or VMax’ing it on the autobahn without letting your hands off the steering wheel and not having to worry about overrevs has its attraction but it is equally great to get an up or down shift exactly right on the manual car. Two different experiences alltogether.

Very true. And so much else besides. The 991 engine has noticeably less mid range torque than the 4.0 and on the road I found myself downshifting a lot more to get it to build speed. And the 991 has more grip, much easier to get the car turned in and also with the help of rear wheel steer. Whilst the 4.0 isn’t exactly devoid of grip you need to work the work the car more, you’re more aware of roll and weight transfer. And of course there is the steering - hydraulic vs the 991’s electric setup.angussampson said:

FWIW my heart would say take the RS. I'm a big fan of PDK but found you have to be driving fast to appreciate how good it is. Bit difficult / risky driving fast on the road. I've done the PDK thing.. if I ever have another GT Porsche it'll quite possibly be manual. I don't miss my (PDK) GT3 one bit - although great car and big achievement (for the money) by Porsche, but found for road driving you may as well be driving a C2. I'm not afraid to admit I get now why people always come back to manual.

I guess it’s what you plan to do with it that counts
