After months of deliberating over it, I finally took the plunge yesterday and bought a 991.1 C2S from Porsche Leeds. It's about 18months old with 5k miles, so is pretty much new. I've never bought a car this valuable before, so i'm keen to keep it looking fresh for as long as possible, and was wondering about paint protection & sealant options.

On my other cars up to now i've used an assortment of washing & detailing products at home. Nothing too specialist, but good quality polishes & waxes. I've heard a lot about ceramic coatings and was wondering if anyone here had opinions on which ones (if any) were worth the investment.

Car is Jet Black with RS Spyder wheels if that helps?

Thanks!

Get a quote for PPF and then compare that to ceramic coating. I paid £400 for a ceramic coating, that has meant cleaning it is very easy. Basically I snow foam it, the dirt falls off. I've never touched it with a sponge or cloth.

Wont stop stone chips, but then even big stone chips will get through PPF.

I reckon in a few years I will have a minor spray to get rid of the stone chips. But that will still be cheaper than the PPF costs I've seen.

Does depend a bit on how your going to use it. Daily drive / up and down the motorway / track days. Or for me it's just sunny sundays and trips to Europe.

I know what you mean Ive had my metallic black Cayman for almost 12 months and the paint is beginning to show swirl marks from washing and that is using a proper wash mitt and two bucket method.

I've now decided to get it detailed and rhen Gtechique applied. Getting it done by Azuri Car Care in Stevenage.

I've had a quote from a company in staffordshire on a GTS coupe.... £1600+VAT for PPF. Fr Bumper, headlights, wings, bonnet, mirrors, sills and half way up rear quarters inc removal of the porsche protector. On top of that a £400+VAT 2 stage correction.

Sounded like a lot of money to me, is this the norm?

He had a GT3 and 488 in their having a full PPF. You really coudlnt tell it was on unless you ran your fingers over it. Only time you can tell is when it doesnt do the whole panel, like he had on the roof of a RS4 being done.

Ive seen quotes for £5k for PPF for the whole car. Given the stone chips are likely to be limited to a few areas I reckon a light limited respray is cheaper ever 4/5 years. PPF is good, but not fool proof.

I suppose if I had a raw carbon Pagain Zonda Id do it, but not a 911

Another very strong recommendation for Azuri Car Care in Stevenage who use G Technique products (as well as PPF). I went with the ceramic coating rather than the PPF because whilst it might give better stone chip protection I really did not like the slight orange peely sort of effect it gives. The previous forum posters tend to have strong feelings about this so I do not wish to provoke another PPF v ceramic coating debate, it is personal preference. The gloss finish you get with ceramic is superb, I will just have to live with the stone chips when they inevitably occur.
Not sure that snow foam and a rinse alone is quite enough to keep it clean though. Maybe I need a better snow foam product.

Congrats on the new purchase it sounds like a lovely car. Given it's jet black it will show everything so it really depends on how you feel about stone chips. The PPF will stop 95% of stone chips. If you flying down European motorways north of 100 MPH for prolonged periods, you will probably pick up a couple of small chips that the film won't stop but it will be a damned sight better than without it.

PPF will start to look crap after 2 to 3 years and some mileage. If you won't be keeping the car beyond that period you can remove it and the car will look fresh. If you are keeping you need to budget on having it taken off and reapplied, but it's still cheaper than a full front end respray, and I am yet to find a body shop that can paint the front end of a car without me being able to tell it's been painted, which I personally find quite irkesome.

After having a black Boxster GTS for 3 years it required a full front end respray due to stone chips.

I now have PPF on my jet black 911 all front sills and rear arch, its not cheap but now I do not have to worry about front end stone chips.

Driving 100 miles from the dealer to have the PPF applied I found 2 minor stone chips on the front valence and the water/air coolers also impacted, so now have the Zunsport grills added.

Two months in 2,000 miles later still looks like new, next time I will have the whole car covered.

Thanks all.
There's a lot to consider. I have PPF on my Caterham, but it's essential if you visit gravel traps every now and again! The 911 will just be for road driving, but the state of my Mercedes after 4 years proves that there must be a benefit to subtle PPF. I was amazed to see at the OPC how much the film had come on over the past 8 years or so. The 997 GT3 RS' on display had quite thick film, whereas the newer 991s had much thinner and less visible film.

I'm intrigued by the Gtechniq products - may investigate detailers locally in the Bristol area.

I’ve got full ppf on my Targa and then had ceramic coating on top. Easy to wash and shines nice too.

i picked up a used Cayman GTS about 18 months ago and that had PPF fitted to the whole car. the panels weren't removed when it was fitted so it was cut a few mm from the panel edges. there's no doubt that the film makes the car a bit darker and doesn't polish as well as the bare paint would, but about 18k on the clock now and when i wash the car i notice how few stone chips there are on the body, though there is the odd one on the bare panel edges.

colour wise i haven't noticed any yellowing yet, but there is some dirt building up under some of the film edges; i may investigate the feasibility of lifting the film slightly, cleaning and then putting back down again - anyone know if this is possible?
