Hi all

My 2002 Jaguar XKR failed it's MOT on the front two tyres. Garage is going to quote for some 'mid priced' replacements but thought I'd check online myself first.

I may only keep the car another 6-9 months so don't want to spend too much cash.

The originals are Dunlop SP Sport 07s all round. Fronts 245/45 R18 W (100) and back are a Y rating. So looking at replacement fronts in a W or Y really (but believe would still be ok with a (oddly) low rating Z?).

Quick look on Asda tyres and Black Circles shows these brands:

Autogrip
Mazzini
Runway
Comforser
Apollo
GT Radial
Kumho (going up in price now but think these are supposed to be half decent?)
Nankang
Avon

Before the pricer better Yokohama and Toyo's I've had before.

Any really bad/to avoid/recommended? Sure I had some Mazzini's on a car once and they seemed fine.

Thanks!

I’ve used the bottom 3 tyres you just on commenter cars. They were fine.

Thanks. I am just commuting in it, no track days or anything like that.

Spend the extra £100 or so, it is false economy putting cheap tyres on a performance car, even if you arent bothered, those who buy cars like an XKR are quite likely to be, seeing ditchfinders fitted makes you wonder where else have corners been cut ? I went to see an M135i that had four different brands of tyres, two nearly bald premium tyres and two different Chinese cheapies, so it needed £600 or so spending to put that right, not everyone is that fussy and I wouldnt be if it was a 115 BHP Passat shed or similar, happy they had tread on, but somethign with 300 bhp plus needs the proper rubber.

After all, you cant neglect buying tyres if you need an MOT, but you can skip an oil change or other maintenance to save a bit.

I wouldn't go below the Kumho, Falken, Barum, Firestone sort of mid range space, at least people have heard of them.

Some good points there. Was thinking about the Kumho ones... Not much more expensive are some Pirellis so that's an option too.

I thought I was going to be able to help you for a moment there, as I have a pair of almost unused 245/45 Uniroyal Rainsport3s I want rid of; unfortunately they're 17s not 18s when I checked...

I have just put those exact sizes on my car. Uniroyal Rain sport 3's.

I rate them very high although some say they wear too quick, I do so little mileage I don't notice.

I asked my usual garage if they would match black circles fitted price of £119 a corner and it turns out he is an aproved fitter of theirs anyway.

Different size wheels, but I run a Kumho Ecsta PS71 on my old 328ci and they're a nice tyre. They've worn well, and cope with Britains weather well. I'm sure they'd be okay in an 18 inch size, and didn't cost the world when I bought them.

I'd say out of that list, go for the Kumhos. I had a set on my old 330Ci and they were absolutely fine, plenty of grip - I've driven a car on Nankangs and they were far worse.

Don’t put cheapies on - if you end up keeping it you will regret it and as been said above, they will potentially put off a buyer as they could what else has been done on the cheap? If you’re sure you’re selling then as a minimum go mid

You shouldn’t be finding out your tyres are shot via an mot? Especially on something as potent as your Jag. Was it on tread depth or something else?

Hope you get sorted
