OP- I'll throw my hat in the ring...

I've had a 997.1 GT3, first Porsche (historically a Ferrari guy) and it blew me away. After two years the pull of the red cars came back and I jumped to a 430 Scuderia which I've owner for 4 years.

Jan this year I took delivery of a lovely 997.2 GT3. Always loved the shape and (IMO) perfected 997 styling tweaks, coupled with the 3.8 engine I just think Porsche got it bang on the money.

Now... I open the garage door and am lucky enough to see both. Which car do I favour? Well I've done 3.5K miles in the GT3 since Jan and have driven the Scud a handful of times. Can't believe how fabulous the .2 GT3 is and really believe Ive found 'my car'. The Scud is a great car but doesn't come close for (manual gearbox) tactile involvement and (again IMO) one of the greatest driving experiences out there. And at any speed...

I see people posting on here about how you need to wring a GT3 to enjoy and the UK roads just don't allow that much of the time. I disagree. Sure pinning it is a fine experience but so is short shifting with the windows down and stereo off, playing with the car and THAT engine.

If one had to go. It would now be the Scud. 997.2 GT3 - An absolute sweet spot of Porsche GT cars.

Hope that helps.
Spot on Hillsy, reminds me I am due a spot of self-flagellation for thinking of getting into a GT4. banghead

Don’t PEC Silverstone have both so you can try them back to back?

Dealers like JZM have both cars for sale - if you contact them with your conondrum perhaps they can allow for a test drive of both? If you decide what you want then easy to follow through on a purchase too.

AFAIK PEC no longer have either 996 or 997.1 GT3s. Also, they don't allow you to 'book' them; you simply pay your money and turn up and (as long as when you're doing the 'familiarisation' in the GTS they don't think you are a complete spaz/liability) they give you a selection of three GT cars.

When I went last year, that was 991.1 GT3, 991.1 GT3 RS, 997 GT2.

Tried that. Come back when you've decided model was the answer.

Agree, but it's a good first step before arranging test drives at dealers.

Another spanner in the works. Anyone gone GT3 -> 7.2 GTS manual? Seems these are at the same level £ wise as a 6.2 GT3.
I've got a manual 7.2 GTS...they're great cars but am not sure if you're in the market for a GT3 that it's a car that will really tick the box for you ? Lovely car and I love driving mine but it's not got the drama of a GT3, I've had a 991.2 GT3 for a couple of months now and wasn't sure if the 997 GTS would still see the light of day but I do really like driving it. But it's not a GT3!

I'm in South Bucks if you want to check one out.

OK I have been thrown a massive curve ball today.

What if you could have a 7.1 with not silly mileage for considerably less than a 6.2, well used but well maintained, on V-car without shell damage in 2011 with full photos of damage and contact details of the guy who damaged it?

It has seen a track a few times but is cosmetically 100% on the outside with recent tidy up.

It is a car you could jump in and do another 40k miles and not destroy the value of.

???

that's the issue, while you can drive the wheels off the car you have now, you won't be able too in a GT3

some times the dream is disappointing... I sold mine for a Cayman R as have a few owners.
A car you can drive the wheels off and have a load of fun in for 1/2 the money.

we will have the 996 GT3 crew turn up soon, it's a very bias view , good luck ;-)

some say they are quick , some say they are not again depends who owns what :-)
A GT3 never been about out right speed until the last few cars, so they are not that fast really, what's hard is getting to see where the engine sings in 3rd gear, that was my issue, one never could, the cars sort of too slow to get to the high RPM in 3rd on B roads due to gearing or traffic or space.

you go though the gears get to about 6k in 3rd than you either hit a bend or traffic just about where the cars comes to life !

One of the most frustrating cars you can own imo. unless you like A roads and silly speeds. I seemed to find myself in no mans land in 3rd gear way to often !!!

most hot hatch's will pull away from a 996 on B roads.

Depends what you want the car for, and that's the key thing to ownership/enjoyment.
Some say, you struggle to find the right gear! biggrin

Sorry for cutting in but is this the red one up at early 60s?

If so check out the GT3 avoidance thread

Nope. This had no panel damage, I've seen the pre-repair pics. Not on the open market to my knowledge.

Thinking about asking if I can have it inspected.

It's a perfectly tractable engine. I find it plenty fast on the road below 4000 revs. A bit of a myth that it only works above 6k.

Quite a nice, deep-chested bellow too at low-rev, high throttle openings.

OK I'm getting an inspection on the 7.1. Who should I use? I already know about Peter Morgan, any other suggestions?

I think Harris_I meant myth as in a widely held but false belief or idea.

How does the 991.2 GT3 gearing compare to the GT4 and 996 GT3 you had?

The point to note with this is that any GT3 or RS that has had recorded damage is extremely hard to sell on. I fully accept that in reality the damage sustained to the car may of been superficial but these are emotional purchases and no one likes to know their new pride and joy has a past. If it were me I would take the p155 with the offer on the basis that if I had to move it in quickly I’d be able to.

Inspection wise I would only use someone who new these cars. If your in the south Parr are probably the best.

Good luck with it.

For inspection you really need someone who works on them and knows them inside out. I think fearnsport is a good bet and worked well for me last time around.

On another 911 I bought, an early one, it was inspected by a pcgb guru and it (the inspection) was really crap. The report said the engine had pressure fed tensioners when clearly it didn't and was just there grin the last report he did.

Car is a beaut fortunately!

Have Fearnsport inspect it.
