Has a nice letter from Porsche this morning advertsing the carbon wheels as an upgrade for Turbo models. 20% less weight apparently. I can see them getting more popular and surprised they appeared first on Turbos rather than GT models.

Looked very nice on a Turbo S Exclusive someone brought to the 70th bash at my local OPC. I thought they were only available (as a £10,770 option) on the Exclusive model?

I’ll correct myself. Can be retro fitted to regular Turbo’s.

Ho Lee Fook that's expensive!

Forged wheels might save you 20%, for a lot less.

Can kerbed Carbons be repaired?

They are actually more than the figure quoted above as the price is the additional cost above the stock option. When I looked into carbon wheels they were around 15K a set from memory (prices may have dropped since). The weight saving was pretty much negligible from the lightest Forged alternative and as you mention, CF is not the best choice regarding impact damage. At 1K a piece for a CF 18" variant they could probably be justified but when you can buy an off the shelf 7.7kg 18" forged wheel for under £400 each it makes 15K difficult to justify.

Just for info, an off the shelf carbon wheel for the front axle on a 996 is the exact same weight as the ones fitted to my car at 7.5kg each, the carbon rears are actually 0.85kg heavier than the Forged wheels I fitted to my 996. I know it is not a like for like comparison in terms of sizes, but this is just going by what is available, as if you wanted CF custom sizes, the prices would be even more ridiculous. As the carbon wheels would need heavier tyres by comparison (probably over 1kg per tyre) this made them not an option for me.

Trying to find a place you trust to change tyres would be your next concern.

That was my first thought. “Erm, sorry sir, there’s a small scratch. But dont worry it’s not obvious so we won’t be replacing your wheel”. Eek.

fk me they are bit ugly though. Even if someone gave me them for free I wouldn’t swap out the original rims for them.

Therein lies the problem. Not a great lookiing wheel and actually spoils the look of the car.

You would have to change all the other black bits to carbon then,, surely?...

Agree , quite ugly anyway....GT3 design hard to beat tbh.

The winter wheels for a GT3 are Turbo S wheels so they may well although the Turbo body is wider so maybe they’re made in a special figment for the GT3. Bizarrely an extra set of summer wheels and tyres with the GT3 wheels is cheaper than the winter wheels and tyres which use the Turbo S wheels.

I have a set, and while not usually a fan of 'dark' wheels of any kind, they do look brilliant in the flesh, imv. Top quality finish.

One thing is that it takes quite a while to relax while driving, as you're aware of the implications of a kerbing! I still park far enough from pavement to require a taxi...
Not sure I'd chose them on an out and out daily driver.

Oh yes! I take back my earlier comment. They look fantastic on the right car / colour scheme. Out of interest, how much is a replacement wheel if you kerb one?

I was told £11k each but OPC shopping around I'd say slightly cheaper?

Not worth it for my car because I’ll only own it until Jan/Feb but considering them 'if' I have an RS allocation

Christ! I wouldn't dare drive it. I'm paranoid enough of scratching my GT3 rims.. hehe

Not to mention that 'naked' carbon fibre have been naff for a few years now, cf used to save weight and painted- yes. Naked carbon... errm no thanks

(Should add that the front splitter on my car have been wrapped in carbon by some previous owner, as was the roof and bonnet... puke inducing but the bit on the splitter I could really not be arsed to try and remove)

They look much nicer than I thought they would. I think they'd look even better if you put 265 and 325 section cup 2 rubber on to give the tyre more of a wall. 265/35/20 325/30/20 MSC2s work fine with a set of lowering springs. Very nice!

FFS - don't tell me that.. :-)
About the same price as a Mag wheel on GT2RS then. Getting a bit silly, and you can understand why people are reluctant to use their cars.

The whole set was an extra £10k when new, but replaced the laser etched wheels that came with the TS Exc, and must also be expensive to begin with.
