997 Turbo, buying
Discussion
I totally concur we running costs. My 997.1 manual has munched through money like nothing else I’ve owned. The suspension in particular must have lived a hard life before I bought the car because most of it has now been replaced.
They’re such great cars though. I’ve taken mine as far as Tuscany and it coped as well with derestricted autobahns as it did with the Swiss Alps and traffic jams in Florence. It’s done the Isle of Man TT course, muddy car parks, snow, supermarket trips...you name it, a 997 Turbo just soaks it all up.
Very impressive machines and shouldn’t disappoint. Unfortunately in the three years I’ve owned mine it’s cost so much in maintenance that I haven’t been able to justify modifying it. Maybe next year.

I think its just luck of the draw to some degree. As I mentioned earliier, in 2 years & 34,000 miles my car only cost me £250 in bits pretty much. Now its gone over the 100k mark I thought id have 9e do a total front to back inspection on the car and anything which they regarded as needing replaced, replaced. They found coolant pipes, cross over pipes, top mounts, front brake discs & pads (i knew needed doing anyway) and some brake lines. Nothing major really. My local indy had already found that the front radiator brackets were rotted through. Anyway, total cost I think came to something like £3500, and should now last me another 100k miles. So even if i factor in that bill its £3750 over 3 years and 35k miles, which isnt bad........Unfortunately in the three years I’ve owned mine it’s cost so much in maintenance that I haven’t been able to justify modifying it. Maybe next year.
Do we think this was good value at £61k (hammer price) ?
(Overall looks like the auction had about a 70% sell rate but there was a lot of no reserve stuff in there. Seems like a few Porsche’s were left on the table)

No, I don’t. I think you can pick up a good example for 35-40k
Really, could you share some links to equivalent cars for that price?Equivalent as in sub 30k miles, manual in a good exterior/interior colour

The dirty secret is that they are all advertised on sale or return. People are accepting 10k less than the advertised price. Granted the miles won’t be a low as that one, but who the fk wants a car that’s not been driven in 10+ years? Basket case
You aren't comparing like for like.A lot of people want a low mileage car and will pay a premium for it, and regardless of SOR and ticket price vs reality, the market has spoken and a car of that mileage is worth low 65k if you factor in auction fees
some of these cars are not used much, some things go wrong if cars don't get used enough but most things wear out through use
I wanted a lowish miles car (but certainly didn't want a garage queen), because I don't do many miles and it was the best way to retain value. I bought a 4 year old car for 46.5 in 2014, it had 28k miles on it and needed some T&C which I gave it in spades. Sold it in early 2018 for 56k and I had added 9k miles in those 4 years. It was my only car but I live in London so don't use a car to commute.
The buyer got a great car (serviced 4 times in 9k miles), black/black, nice spec, manual with still below average miles
Hi Guys,
Resurrecting this thread as I am considering a GEN II 997 Turbo with PDK. I am new to the Porsche scene, as up until July this year owned a CLS63 AMG-S, but it was stolen off my drive. Hence I have been considering a load of different marques to replace it with, but keep coming back to a 911 Turbo. I have previously owned a GTR, RS4, and CLS500, but the thought of owning a Porsche Turbo keeps niggling in my head. I haven't got an unlimited budget (Circa 55k) which I know will restrict me in my choices, however I keep coming back to this car,

I am very lucky to have a good friend that runs a garage and has restored several 911s(to Porsche spec and standard) which have been featured in Total911, as well as winning awards, hence the question of purchasing privately or via a indi/OPC, i guess isn't an issue as he would conduct a through PPI on the car.
What are your initial thoughts on the car in the link above? Granted its the cheapest i've seen, mileage isn't high, its the spec and colour i want, has a FPSH, and its only 25 miles away fron home. I value all opinions, good bad indifferent so please grace me with your knowledge and experience
Thanks Chaps

The money you spend on these if you get one that needs some TLC is eye watering. You can drop 10-15k at the drop of a hat if turbos, pdk box etc need replacing. I would take a bit of finance and buy an example like this from an OPC which will come 2 yr warranty. No brainer.Resurrecting this thread as I am considering a GEN II 997 Turbo with PDK. My experience with dealers has been poor. OPC may be different, but so many others are either selling SOR cars, or will squirm out of any future claim, I now prefer to buy the right car regardless of where from. In fact I often think that buying privately, and putting the balance between that and a dealer price aside for remedial work makes sense.
The car the OP has linked seems fairly priced - but when I was looking it was not until I saw each car that you can tell the condition. OP - I suggest you go and look at a few. Stating the obvious, but the condition of 10 yr old cars vary a lot!
OP - If you have any questions about them, (though mine is a Gen1 Manual) running costs etc, I am happy to share my experience. PM me.
thanks, buddy - I echo your thoughts
Interesting replies I have had on PH forum as some saying that they would only by via an OPC/dealer, and others saying the private purchase isn't an issue providing a PPI is done.
Well, I bought an RS4, R35 GTR (the first one I looked at) privately and didn't even drive it!!! I also bought my last car CLS63 AMG-S, albeit from a dealer, but again placed a deposit on it over the phone, then drove 350 miles to Barrow to do the deal. only 3 months warranty on that. Both cars never missed a beat, and trust me the GTR was driven all over Europe and HAMMERED!!!! The RS4 was a great car, and again didn't have any major issues and drove perfectly
So I guess its personal choice as to whether your risk-averse and feel the desire to pay out more by purchasing via OPC, or less worried and purchase privately??

If it's a 2010 car, as long as it passes the 111 point check, you can buy the Porsche warranty 3 months after purchase (that may change if you bought privately), and you can have it warrantied until 2025. Which is nice. It's not an OEM warranty, there are wear and tear exclusions, but it's the best of the extended ones.
