I have been saying for a long time we need to support home grown products, Germany didn't become the powerhouse of Europe by importing more than they export.
In the respect of this being a motoring forum take a look on our roads and how many British manufacturer owned/built cars do you see? VAG group, BMW ( including Mini) , Mercedes all from Germany have got to be the overwhelming majority followed closely by Ford(USA ) with many built in Germany.
I think McLaren has now got to be the biggest British motor manufacturer yet they don't make an affordable car for the masses!
It did make me laugh the other day, I love British tomatoes (they are the best)and in the supermarkets you don't expect homegrown this time of year yet we import from the Nertherlands which has the same climate, why? The two Germany owned supermarkets import all year round!
Most of our carpets in our homes come from Belguim yet we make really good carpets of better quality and of reasonable cost!
Forget Brexit just get behind British products! Just a shame we all lust after Gemany sports cars even ones you have to have bun fight to buysbiggrin

The Italian tomatoes? I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it strikes me as unlikely. They’re fruit, not prospecters, for e.g.

Ah, righto! I thought you were referring to SA wine. I panicked for a moment.

The Eyore's not about to get stronger than the pound. Not from the PMI figures they've just released. Draghi's in a real quandry; he's missed the boat to raise rates and now most of the EU looks in dire need of a cut or some other stimulus.

If Brexit happens I reckon we’ll see parity between the Euro and the pound, but for anything we import the bigger issue is likely to be logistics- UK border force figs show best case of 75% reduction in road freight, worst case of 87%. Where in our list of priorities do tomatoes come, and what are we willing to go without for them? Plus, of course, tariffs which on agriculture are high.

Agree on the cars but not the wine, personally prefer wines from down under and South America although English wine is very good especially the fizz

Agree about English wine. Nye Timber's always reliable anyway.

My point involving the tomatoes is we import a shed load of stuff that we can farm or manufacturer in this country without having to import from other EU countries, the problem is we don't build a good quality affordable sports car or even more so a car for the people!
Maybe on brexit we will adopt an Australian level of car tax it certainly make a Mcclaren look cheap compared to a Porsche

Yet again although these might be assembled in the UK they are Japanese owned! Similarly to the Mini which yet again is assembled in Oxford but German owned.

All of which are based in the UK for ONE reason, incidentally - the UK was the best gateway into the EU market.

If Brexit happens these plants will disappear over time. Especially now that Japan and EU have signed a trade deal, which reduces the need for the Japanese to be making cars in Europe.

The UK exports most of its auto-sector manufacturing to the EU. The UK exports £22bn of agricultural products to the EU. The UK exports most of its fish catch to the EU. The UK has a MASSIVE trade surplus with EU (the biggest being financial services which is one of the biggest contributors to the UK government's tax take).

Reducing out trade deficit and the amount we import from the EU is something that would be good for the UK. But to pretend that Brexit is going to hurt the EU more than the UK when our exports are hugely dependent on the EU and they're far bigger than us...

And trade deals don't even cover services. Which are only 80% of the UK economy.... rolleyes

Costs a lot to ship cars and certainly in the case of Nissan Sunderland, it is one of the most productive plants in the world. So there are a lot of variables, not least, where in the EU could you put a new plant that is both productive and cost effective?

Not, for one moment, saying there is nothing at all in what you say, but rather that the situation all round is very complex and dynamic.

Agreed, but I'm afraid the overall direction of travel is in one way and that's away from the UK. frown
