Okay, I had some redundancy money left over, and I got the reluctant nod from the wife, so I’m gonna buy a Cayman. There’s one at a local garage, 2007 2.7 with 100k, £11k. Just had a major Porsche service in November, with full receipts etc. So far so good? Do I also need a pre purchase check from a Porsche specialist? Should the garage be okay about this? Or am I basically saying that the major service is irrelevant? What could the pre check reveal that wouldn’t be addressed at the service stage?

Seems with these cars big mileage can equal big bills in the near future.

The 2.7 receives good reports and less of the bore score problems.

The 987 is a great car but at that price point you need to have your eyes wide open.

Get pre inspection.....if it's ok, buy it. 2.7 safer bet than a 3.4S gen 1 - I simply wouldn't touch one of them.

The thing is, even a pre-inspection by Porsche won't do alot. Yeah they will check the chassis and oil etc but do you really think for £200-300 (can't remember the inspection price) they're going to open the cylinders up? It's a big job and takes at least 4 hours and Porsche charges £90 an hour for labour. You do the math.

I would personally look for something with low mileage just in case.

Nothing wrong with high miler if its been maintained. Many low mileage cars on the market where owners dont get it serviced yearly because they do few miles .
Look for classic signs of smoke odd noises etc

Agree with the other posters the mileage would turn me off personally. It seems you have to spend a couple of £k more to around the £13-14k mark to get a nice lower mileage example. Interesting as that is what I paid for my 07 Cayman base model with 59k miles two years ago so the prices are obviously pretty stable and perhaps bottoming out.

Anyhow I think if you’re max budget is £11k and mileage is 100k+ just go in with eyes open that you may have to spend some money on it in the nearish future and may be a bit more difficult to resell. If it drives, sounds and feels right it might be worth a gamble.

Is it the silver one on AT with black wheels?

Pre-purchase Inspection should catch lots of other potential big-ish bills though; worn/broken suspension, brakes and exhaust being potentially pretty costly.

OP, how many previous owners? that for me would be an indication of whether it has been cared for by a few owners. Also going through the service history/bills with a fine tooth comb. I know these days allot of that is not kept with the car..

Yes T1547, that’s the one on AT. The garage seem okay, quite happy to show receipts, log bookmstamps etc. Just had £2000 spent on it (brakes, suspension). I took it out for a spin, not got above 3rd on local roads, but sounded fine. They give a three month parts and labour guarantee, plus I could add warranty wise... still on the fence a bit now. I can afford the car, and can afford a warranty, but how bad could it be. And I’m not sure how the garage would feel about letting the car go for a half day inspection 12 miles away before I’ve spent any money. Thoughts?

The garage has a 5* rating from Google (37 reviews). They seem to sell a wide selection of cars, mostly part exchanged so they are a small probably privately owned dealer. They are by no means a performance car specialist. It is very likely they know very little about the car. They just got it through Part Ex, cleaned it up and assumed it's good.

The pictures look great, but obviously you've seen it up close and taken it for a drive.

Few things I would suggest:
1. Make sure you get receipts for the brakes done and everything else.
2. Take it for a PROPER test drive.. motorways.. 0 to 60 tests.. its important.
3. Use the mileage as a bargaining point for getting the dealer to throw in a year warranty into the deal. Most small dealers will do this in my experience. If not, walk away (they'll call you back hehe).

Not always the case with how many owners . You quite often see 3 or 4 owners in the first couple of years of ownership

Great advice everyone. My gut feeling is close to where Crispystork is coming from. Dealer has taken the car as PX, seen the FSH and receipts, but doesn’t have much experienced of Porsches. It’s good to know the major costs are brakes and suspension. These seem to have been covered at last major service. Will take an extended run on Saturday and push for a 6000 mile warranty which should last a year. Let’s see...

6,000 miles/12months of proper warranty on a 12 year old 100,000 mile car? You'll be lucky!

IMO the real question is why you want to buy a car like this from a dealer and not direct from a private seller. If you end up in court after an argument over the condition of the car the dealer will say, "I knew the car was in decent condition because it had just been through a £2k Porsche service and had all its paperwork". And the judge will say, "Bad luck claimant, you can't expect an as-new car when you buy a cheap old car".

Go in with your eyes open and don't expect a safety net.

I actually got it for £10K in the end, which felt around right for the car given the recent service receipts (new brakes and suspension, around £3K). I kinda expect that I’ll lose a couple of grand over the next few years, but it’ll be a strictly weekender, and I probably won’t put any more than 3,000 miles per year.

Congrats on the purchase.
Why did the dealer give 1000 pounds off? I couldn't get a tank of petrol from Jeff white in Cardiff on a 17K BMW . Am I doing it wrong?

Hi all, just posting up as I've just bought a Boxster 987, 61 plate. Sadly had to sell my Elise due to difficulty getting out ( I'm an old git with arthritis) so checked out a few options and had several test drives e.g SLK, GT86, TT, MX5 among them and the Boxster came out best.
A couple of members in our local Lotus club and one of my clients have them and are happy with them so I've taken the plunge and bought from a well recommended Porsche specialist in Knaresborough North Yorkshire. Nice and local as I live near York.
All good so far and looking forward to some long UK and European trips as well as more local runs.
