Finally made it into a 991.2 GT3. Car is perfect and I'm am happier than the proverbial, nearly...

The front numberplate plinth is starting to bug me and having just procured a private reg starting GT03 smile, my pref. is to run without on the front and use 4dots or a similar supplier for a nice (actual) plate at the rear.

I'm aware the plinth topic has been covered elsewhere to some extent yet have some specific questions around filling / removing the 4 blasted holes that have been drilled to affix the plinth and plate by the dealer. Any help with the below much appreciated

1. Any recommends in terms of who might do this in the North West (1 quote out with Lloyds who I fear may be £££)
2. Thoughts on leaving them and hiding them under a smaller stick on plate
3. Track days/ toeing eyes : is one tow eye generally acceptable or if the rear is without toe might track day recovery just strap round the wing?! the 4dots GT3 rear plate would cover the toe hole it seems.
4. Any recommends for suppliers other than 4dots for the actual rear plate ?

Thanks in advance,

Martin

2. This should work if the plate is a solid stick-on, but if it's a sticker you'll likely see indents.

3. Typically one only uses one eye, front or rear. If recovery can't reach it they'll hook something solid - I don't have personal experience but think this tends to be suspension components rather than a wing, which may snap off.

Thanks, Neil @ Highgate has given me some excellent advice

I may choose to have the holes filled properly

Just means repainting and re filming which is a pain

But some things just got to be right!

<cough>wker!</cough>

I've got one of those now too.hehe

Single tow eye, front or rear will normally suffice on track. Not been anywhere that demands or expects two.

A stick-on front plate should hide holes. For the purpose of disambiguation; you're not suggesting running without a front plate full stop, just no plinth, right? I'd definitely not recommend running without a front plate - it's just an excuse to get pulled over and hassled.

I too have been thinking of doing this on my GTS. I wouldn't think that the screw holes would show or sink below a vinyl plate, they are I guess 3mm dia. Otherwise, the holes could be filled easily without the need for a bumper repaint and the plate applied.

I’ve had a stick on vinyl plate on my last 2 and it looks and works perfectly, no plinth. Highgate do a great job on them , various sizes etc
Big plus 1 from me. Ring and ask for Rick.

Thanks all

I was going to leave front plate off and just sticker up for Ring outings / Eurpoean jaunts where I believe they are quite stringent.

However, wearing one as per the examples shown (thanks for these) works well

Just need to measure up and see if all those blasted holes will be covered up by the stick on variety

Rick @ Highgate super helpful

Congratulations on getting the car & joining the GT03... gang. As Robgt3 said, we have been very happy with the stick-on plate supplied by Rick for our GT3 and he is supplying an identical one now for our GT3RS.

My question is how much of a risk are we running by using the RS without a front plate? Quite a lot of sports cars/supercars seem to be run without a front plate but I'm pretty sure the law requires one. So how many people get stopped for this and how many get fined?

I'm seeing lots of s'cars without front plates and wonder if keeping a sticker / plate in the boot as well as being polite to plod is the way?

I have read that the fine for an illegal plate is £1k but more like £30. for not having a plate

Guess all comes down to what mood old bill is in

Could always stick the plate on the dash. Seems to be quite popular nowadays. Not sure if its any more illegal than not having a number plate at all though.

Then some track days to look fwd to in summer - most notably Spa with Book - a - Track in July

The police don't always prosecute for illegal or missing front plates, but they can and often do, from what I read and hear. IMHO, it's just not worth the hassle, if for no other reason than it does give them a totally legitimate reason to pull you over and waste half an hour + of your time.

I got booked last year for not having a front plate on my GT3..It was £60 FPN and the copper mentioned that if i was caught again its a £1K fine for a repeat offence. I have plinths on my everyday cars but now have a stick-on for my GT3 and 981 Spyder..My newly delivered Ferrari also has no front plate and waiting for a Carbonia front plate drill free clamp as there's no room for a stick-on..
Driving around without a front plate nowadays is just daft IMO and just leads to unwanted fuzz attention and extra stress..!

Agree Taffy , you end up worrying and keeping one eye out for the boys in Blue . Anyway in London it also works as a Chelsea tractor tow bar stop .
Not sure the French Police would be happy if abroad as they seem very un-conciliatory to UK drivers .

and you don't worry doing 67 in a 60 ? which would be then 3 point and 50% of your week wage as a fine, over a just FPN of £60 for no plate. !

it's a no brainer not to fit a plate and hence why it's quite common now.

Don't forget a repeat offence is a £1k fine and a court appearance..

What’s the rationale for no front plate?

Seems to me like it’s attention seeking (quite literally in the case of any police that are paying attention)

991 GT cars look great with a vinyl front plate and pretty naff without a plate at all imho.

It’s somehow way more obvious that it’s missing on. 911 than on a Ferrari or Lamborghini for some reason.

Fancy plates could make you a three quarter plate - they look neat, and may be just enough to keep the Boys in blue off your back. Obviously that isn’t going to help hide holes though !

Tbh, the car looks a little lost/odd without some sort of front plate. A shortened stick on plate may be the best compromise
