I regularly pass through a village on my way home and I keep seeing a few old people armed with what looks like a speed gun.
Assuming the speed gun is real, what would happen if they recorded someone's speed as being above the limit? Do their shenanigans hold any clout?

They pass your registration onto the police who will write a letter telling you to slow down.

Yep as said before you get a letter about your heinous crimes. The people in my village that do it (there’s only 3 of them) were trying to get locals to join up recently, same kind of people that have been suggesting speed bumps for a 50 mph Limit hill that goes into the village, also suggested we lower all the limits after a drunk driver crashed into a wall a few weeks back

No it isn't. It's a scheme for a bunch of "holier than though" retirees with nothing better to do than create division between them and motorists.

It’s normally a requirement of the local authority in a village that suffers from tts speeding through at 50-60mph in a 30mph area.
Before the local authority will do anything they require a community speedwatch to be in place to show there is a speeding problem by recording details of speeders- idiotic thing is that the speed watch near me has to put signs up so if anyone is caught speeding with all those warnings they should just hand their keys in.
Had it this am with a tt in a fiesta who overtook me at 60 in a 30 zone as he couldn’t wait for the NSL to arrive and couldn’t really drive quickly around those twisty bits...

In some places maybe. They have just started one here. Cars regularly go through the 30mph limit at over 60 (proven by a static speed display), even artics at over 50. Speed watch have been advised anyone over 36 gets a letter, so there is a margin. Personally, and this is speaking as someone who enjoys fast cars and races, I’d have thought the radar data would mean it merits a speed camera. And as for the ‘holier than thou’ (spelling!) comment, what would you do living next to a village road where dicks drive like that? Go out and applaud?

It's a matter of public record that Speedwatch volunteers come in threes:

1. A gaunt skinny man that looks like a corpse
2. A red faced, jolly looking fat man
3. A slightly confused looking woman who is never holding the actual speed gun.

Absolutely agree. I’m a total petrolhead with a new 911 on the drive and yet once a month I go out with my local speed watch group to try to get idiots to slow down in our village. In our case, the whole village was consulted by the Parish Council and speeding was identified as the second highest priority after affordable housing. We get the occasional dhead shouting abuse but they automatically receive a visit from our local Police and in one case ended up with their car seized for no tax and insurance.

But it's only a matter of time before they realise nobody in their right mind speeds through villages and take their speed guns to NSL roads. Then find to their fury that the traffic isn't going as fast as they thought and demand a speed limit reduction so they have something to report.

There's a road in Essex that used to be, probably still is, popular with bikers visiting Epping forest coffee huts. Locals insisted the bikes were regularly doing 130+ (this is on the road from Stapleford airfield to Abridge). The police put up speed traps and over several weeks found just 1 person exceeding 60. The suggestion then was to give locals speed guns just to show them that speeds weren't as high as they thought.

I got done by some of this lot for speeding a couple of years ago. 33 in a 30.

Just got a letter notifying me that I had been caught at 33mph and when and where

Speedwatch letters do not normally state the speed and the normal cut off is 35mph.

That sounds the same as our village ,it lasted about 2 weeks before being ostracised in the Pub and the bowls club put a stop to it. i think the final straw was when the members of the local W.I. refused to share their scones with the safety camera narks wifes.

Speedwatch groups are not allowed to operate in NSL areas because of safety issue

You would be quite happy for tts to drive through a 30mph village at 50+?

The confused woman is never holding the speed gun but is ALWAYS holding the clipboard...

(Edited quote). Seriously - you may well be right that no one in their right mind speeds through villages, but I can assure you that people not in their right mind do in mine. I’d be ok with a 10-15% margin, but here it’s in excess of 60 in a 30. It is stupid, dangerous, pointless, and I really don’t care if ‘busybodies’ do something about it.

And yes, I’ve exceeded speed limits in the past (and at present), but nothing as stupid as more than 40 in a 30 (and if I was caught I’d have no reason to complain).
