while looking for options this seemed a good idea:

Costco has the Quickjack on offer for a grand but too rich for the limited number of times I am likely to use it.

The JackPoint jack stands look great but they are $300 pair + shipping + duty so similar price to the quickjack once landed and paid for.

Look a good idea to me but can surly be knocked up for a fraction of that price. Heavy duty box section with jacking plate welded at appropriate dimensions.. bingo !!

I’ve been agonizing about buying one of these for the 986
1.5 ton non-adjustable width or 2 ton adjustable meaning I can use it on other cars too. Hmmm...

Not sure if I have space at side of car to get it in position, looks ideal for the sort of jobs I fancy undertaking

I know what you mean - I've a double garage but only 1.5 bays of it are free so may not be able to place the lift alongside. I am wondering though if I could buy the adjustable width version and expand / build it up from the side, pushing it under as I go. They are only down the road from me in Heywood so might pop in and have a look at one in the flesh, see if it's possible. I've already cleared it with Father Christmas (who's already bringing a certain other family member a Dyson Air-wrap thing costing a bloody fortune)
I really like the look of the tilting feature meaning loads of access to the back of the car. I might finally see the engine on my 986 smile
As I said, I'm agonizing!!!

I have used a pair of low profile jacks for years. https://www.sgs-engineering.com/tjl2-2-tonne-low-p...

Jack front or rear at same time using jacking points each side, support on simple axle stands, then lift the other end and support on stands.

Simple, safe, cheap, stable!
