Hi Gents

Keen to get back in Pork after having a 996 Targa 19 years ago, then 2x 966tts but broke one on a tree then been into E63s and RS6's etc since.

So like the idea of the Cab which could be an option but even more like the idea of the Targa as not so "on show" but still want the open top/wind feel.

Getting back to learning about the differences as to whats what with the 991.1 and 991.2 and 992's etc.

I like turbo engines, like 4wd hence why Im thinking 991.2 Targa 4 trouble is man maths is being stretched to get a 991.2 and a .1 is more wifeable.

Anybody views/experiences of a 991.1 Taga or 991.2 targa or the Cabs I would be keen to hear, points to note or advice.

must say I did enjoy the 996 targa as my first pork very much - a good blend.
thx

hope the pics bring a smile !

yes even a 996tt can't beat the laws of Physics !

Neither tree or car buffed out - lucky I did. Went back into another 996tt but never got the same feelings back but did enjoy the dynamics and feelings of the targa so think its about time to get one again. Would like a 918 spyder /box 4.0 but need the +1 rear seat.

Never driven the Targa, but would think if it’s the open top bit that the 991.1 engine note would be the more appealing given the open top nature. I’d go GTS if money will stretch.

Hi, like you I had a 996 Targa for some years. Last year I decided to move on.

I like the idea of the 991 Targa but in the end discounted it as the car has to be stationary to open or close the roof whereas with the 996/ 997 Targas (and 991 convertibles) the roof can be opened or closed on the move as you know. I like the open air but then the inevitable rain comes along sooner or later.

I came to the conclusion that the nearest thing to the 996 was a 991 with a glass sunroof and have ended up with a 991.2 Carrera version.

The roof glass is not quite as large an area as the 996 and neither is the roof aperture by a larger measure. Of course it works in a different way going up and out instead of down and in and is hopefully a simpler piece of kit.

Also, there seems to be a little more wind intrusion than I remember in the 996. I think the 996 Targa has a slightly higher roofline than the coupe whereas on the 991 it is the same roofline.

And of course, no hatch.

Having said all that the 991 Targa is a more impressive vehicle, more theatre etc and more of the open air experience.

Good luck with your search.

My wife has had a 991.1 targa for the last 4 years and uses it daily. She absolutely loves it and it is an excellent car.

We took it on a 3 week holiday to the south of France and also over to Paris and there is plenty of rom for luggage etc. and it was very comfy for such a long drive. (we lived just outside Glasgow at the time). It's not as engaging a drive as my 997, but as a GT type car its very good. PDK suits it very well, and with the 4S I can't say I ever felt it suffered from the extra weight of the roof mechanism.

There is a bit of wind buffeting when the roof is open but its not too bad and i can't say it ever bothered me, and I prefer the looks of it over the cabriolet.

Overall I would recommend one, lovely cars

Your point about the torque of the 991.2 engine being a big positive is a very good one. That’s why I’d want the 991.2.

I owned a 991.2 Targa 4S for just under a year, and they're great cars, however the exhaust note wasn't as loud as my 991.1 C2S, which was a bit of a disappointment.

OP, consider a coupe with sunroof if you want some 'opentop-ness'. I'd go for a .2 for more modern infotainment. I think the 3.0T engine is great but there's no denying the .1 engine is an NA classic.

some really good points there - thank you.

Im off next weekend to have a look at a 991.2 targa and 991.2 Cab - need to make sure 1x child fits in the back and to just see what they are like.

Do want more of a wind in the hair then a large sunroof now and the Cab is growing on me after watching some you tube reviews plus its less out of my budget if that makes sense.....

Agree. The 991 Targa is a very heavy car. I'd want the extra turbo torque to move it about properly - and I am usually into NA engines

We have had a 991.2 GTS Cab for just over 2 years, bought as a 'weekend' car, but finding we are using it more often.

Any excuse in dry weather for the roof down, just had a few days in the Cotswolds, averaged somewhere around 32mpg, cant say it feels any great difference to a coupe with the roof up. (Was never bought to use on track days)

Think its a great all round car.

thank you -

Had a drive of a 991.2 Targa and yep it was good. Its on at https://finder.porsche.com/gb/en_GB/911-Targa-4S-2... £89k

I havnt tried any negotiations - how much flexibility do you think they may have on the price/best way to get something off.?

my inital budget was £82 k so this is pushing the man maths somewhat.!

starting to consider a full convertible now and have a drive of a C4 GTS 911.2

Had always discounted them but again watched some youtube and it got some great reviews. Any views on the C4 GTS?

If you never has a convertible, i think it is worth going for one. The automatic wind deflector is brilliant and you can open/close whilst moving. I dont think it makes much difference dynamically either.

smile

Had a drive of a c4 GTS Cab yesterday which drove well and yes agreed about the dynamics. I do still prefer the Targa as like not being so on show whilst still having the roof down. So off to see another targa tomorrow. smile

budget creep unfortunatly.
