Hi FL Racing
I assume you did not go through with the purchase of the mIami blu Gt3 as it is still for sale. I am tempted as I sold my 992 GTS which I found way too. hard for our Scottish Roads.
Can you share your thoughts on the car if you viewed it

Thanks

Sid
I can indeed I bought it, all being well should be delivered Friday.

There where 2 other Miami Blue cars for sale at same time an OPC car with 28k miles and an independent with 11.8k, both still for sale .

Just to be clear as you have messed up the quoting, I didn’t say that but I do agree!
Apologies I built upon MarkM3’s misquote so wasn’t sure he said what

But anyway, mental!!
Sorry for the poor post, I quoted, but stuck my comments in the wrong bit!!

£101K for new 991.2 gt3 engine was the figure quoted to a chap I spoke to and £57K was the rebuild cost from Guildford OPC, after Porsche said there would be a delay in providing a full replacement engine.

I did also enquire about how much a rebuild could cost dependent on failure for a .2 engine with JZM/RPM and they advised up to £70K

997.1/2 Mezger engine has a few issues. The coolant hoses is probably the most potentially serious, because not only can it wreck the engine and also send coolant under the tyres causing it to crash, but the coolant spills have also been known to cause extremely serious multi-car crashes.

The snag is there’s not always any warning. Not drips of coolant on the garage floor, or anything. The adhesive holding the coolant fitting will show no leaks, until the engine is very hot and at high revs - i.e. on the track - and then they let everything go. I have seen one occasion where a 997.2 3.8 GT3 RS had just a slight leak which misted the car his mate was driving behind, through Foxholes, and the engine coolant warning flagged up before he’d trashed the engine or filled the track with coolant.

It’s not an impossible fix, but important.

Rennlist is a good source of info.
The coolant connections can be pinned or welded ... I had a GT3 dump its coolant in front of me on the way into Pouhon (Spa) ... thankfully there is plenty of run-off and although spinning off I collected the car and came back onto the circuit after the corner ... but Sean Edwards who was in the passenger seat said to me ... "what happened there ?" ... "Didn't you see it ?"

A learning exercise ...

£135k for an OEM 997.2 3.8 RS engine.

If you have a 4.0 let go, there are none available, AFAIK.

To be honest mate it probably cheaper to keep the 7.1 and buy a 991.1 than turn your 3.6 into a 3.8 or 4.0 these days
Yes, you are probably not wrong, but I am the epitome of "awkward bd" so will keep throwing money into the 993 derived crankcase. biggrin

Some of the engine repair/replacement costs quoted have been a real eye opener!

Yes buying a manual especially without warranty is a bit of fun . Having had a few rebuilds on Porsche race cars it is not cheap or easy .

What model year was your 997.1 GT3?
you knew my car well it was 8 months old than yours but was also quicker. hehe
"FL Racing"? From the little known town of FLorida, Nottingham? biglaugh

So it was a 2006 car, my understanding is the 'bad batch' being referred to was 2006 MY cars. Be good to hear from anyone with a conrod failure on a 07 or 08 MY car

Just watched Matt Armstrong and his giggling dad ripping apart (rather poorly) their water damaged GT3RS engine. He's looking at having to replace it completely, big bill looming.

Yes. He had a fabulous way of coaching, just two words. Very immediate and concise and he trusted you to do it.

O/T His dad makes me giggle too. I love the way MA, his dad and the rest of the team just bash through a rebuild. They don’t claim to be restoring it to factory, but the fact they get wrecks back even as far as they do is impressive and the detail they share are above and beyond any of the fairly predictable TV car restoration shows. Pretty refreshing and the success of the channel reflects it.

They did actually struggle massively with this GT3RS engine though, absolutely no idea of how to strip it and probably damaged it further. Still it's decent watching and they do make a decent fist of most things.
He's gone way past needing to make money or sensible decisions on these cars now, it doesn't really matter if he had to buy a brand new engine the views alone would cover it. Not sure if he'll sort all the water damaged ecu issues easily though !

Always a high risk game sitting in an unknown car with an unknown driver and pushing the operating boundaries of both.

The Ferrari they rebuilt - the one he gifted to his dad, which was a nice touch - made me raise my eyebrows. All the engine bits on the garage floor. I honestly have no idea how they remember which bit came from where and in what sequence.

OT but...
Sean was a lovely guy. And talented coach.
I bought a day with him at Bedford for my wife in her 997 and sometimes wish he hadn't showed her quite what the car - and she - is capable of. Her brother was a past British Rally Champion, and a Subaru works driver when he and his co-driver died in a crash. Sean knew him and decided to see if fast hands ran in the family. They do. And now she knows it smile

RIP ML, RF and SE.
