Hi All,

After a few weeks of trying various other sports cars I have settled on a 992 C2S, I really like that they have moved the 992 on significantly from the 991 in terms of speed, handling and tech (all IMO by the way!). Just feels like a thoroughly modern proposition whilst keeping that innate 911-ness (I have had a 996, 997 and 991 in the past). Every time I move away from a 911 I end up wishing I was back.

One of my questions is around what is going on with the supply and demand of these cars? I am told that there is a huge issue/shortage with new cars so that is driving up the prices of used cars. There doesn’t seem many around and decent ones are not only going for a high used price but seem to be selling in record times. There really aren’t that many on the market and they seem to be selling for £5-£10k less than their original price which seems crazy for a used car.

So, is it a really stupid time to buy a 992? I am used to getting kicked in the teeth with sports cars and depreciation but this feels like it has the potential to be way worse. If I am starting from an already over inflated price they there really is only one way to go. I can certainly wait for a while but this could go on for 6 months, 12 month ++ and I don’t really want to wait forever to get back into a new car. I am assuming their will be a correction at some point but am not really clever enough to know when and what that might look like. I really don’t want to deal with double depreciation so not really sure what to do. Lastly the prices for these new 911's has gone up a lot, as I said at the start I think they have moved on considerably but a second hand sports car at £100k seems like a lot and is also at used supercar money.

Any advice/thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

The market supply and demand sets the price at any one time so theres not much you can do as a buyer especially in the current climate which looks set to maintain high used prices for the next couple of years at least. Further rises are widely anticipated over the next few months continuing for much of 2022 and 23 as new supply and parts issies together with other issues drive used prices higher.

Trying to time the market is notoriously difficult and can often backfire price wise so if you want a car just buy one and drive it. Those having sold out in the last few months in the hope of prices falling back approaching Winter will most likely be in for a shock as Julys figures will soon prove.

If you want one, and have the moolah/access to it - buy one. Nobody has a crystal ball and can say with any cast iron accuracy what will happen, nor when. There are shortages on the supply of new vehicles, so a wait will be required if you want to order to your own spec, and there's competition on the purchase front because lots of people have spare cash floating around (for many reasons - not taking holidays, attitudes changed towards only living once, helicopter money etc).

They are a great car at the end of the day, and many people want one - with only a limited stock available (and this is likely to be the way for a while), which means prices/depreciation is actually very good. We can't have it both ways, minimal depreciation and excellent stock availability, the two things are fairly mutually exclusive. But don't knock it, once you have one you wouldn't be wanting high depreciation, surely?!

We get one go at it, treat yourself...or ride the supercar rollercoaster if you prefer, each to their own.

I'm in similar boat. Looking at 991.2's and 992's and the prices are crazy at the moment but seem to selling. It's making me consider ordering new to my ideal spec (or waiting until November or so to order the rumoured 992 T) instead of buying pre-owned.

What kind of a lead time are people being quoted on a new 992 Carrera at the moment? Nearest AD's to me are about an hour away which is a pain as I feel I need to start driving a few cars to get a feel for exactly what I'm after.

I am seeing any 'reasonable' priced cars going so quickly you barely have time to think about it. Was about to make an offer yesterday and in the time I was pondering it sold. Same today. I dont want to get caught up in panoc buying something I'm not 100% on but it is a bit crazy out there.

I have been told they cannot give me lead times on a new car but certainly next year some time.

Nuts isn't it! I was tempted by a well-priced white 991.2 Paragon had last week. Not a huge fan of white though and it was PDK when ideally I'd like a manual. In any event it sold within a couple of days.

I would try and be patient and order a new one, to your perfect spec. And then enjoy it.

I have a simple philosophical view on buying a car. Set a a max budget and stick to it. When the right car at the right price comes up , snap it up and then I never look at what the market is doing until time to sell.
I got lucky with my GT 4 as I bought it in Nov and market was low and it came in under my max budget and currently it would be easy to sell for a profit but what would I replace it with ?
So but what you like , enjoy driving it and budget in a sensible amount of depreciation you are happy with. Good thing is. A 992 should not depreciate much and a base non S even less I feel

This, if waiting a little while is not the end of the world, then order one to your perfect spec

I’ve been told early 2022 likely to be earliest delivery date for a 992 S or GTS ordered now. Didn’t seem too bad to me, but who knows what the reality will be.

As much as I would like a new car I don’t think it’s an option for me. If I knew I had to wait x amount of time I could live with that but to have no real idea and potentially keep getting pushed would drive me mad. Just going to keep my eyes open for the right used car and act quickly!

Hi Zanderman, I’ve just listed this for sale if of interest to you. Appreciate its a 991 and perhaps not what you’re after.

How can you say you’d easy sell at profit if you never look at market?

Another thing I am finding is a lack of interesting colours. Loads of silver, black etc but nothing like the Miami Blues of the 991 (not sure I could pull that colour off but you get the point!) Nicest ones I have seen are the dark blue and a grey green but not exactly jazzy!

This any good? Cue shameless pic of my 992C2S..... certainly not resale Black, Grey or White yikes

In all seriousness, its not for sale, but throwing in my take on it all having gone through the 'shall I drop £100k on a car? shall I not? Can I justify it? Can I not? Second hand now? First hand, but wait? What if? Then what? blah blah blah.....'

Well I did nearly 2 years ago, as a life long dream to own a 911. Wanted a new one, because the numbers, finance, all stacked up, and I had EXACTLY what I wanted. Yellow, like a RUF Yellowbird. I waited 9 months for that and would have happily waited for another 9.

It was pre-Covid, I went in with my head and an assumption that it would loose 40% or £40k over the first four years as all new cars do, then thinking it would stabilise out and as long as it was looked after, it probably wouldn't loose much more than £20k over the next 4, by which time it would be mine, all paid for, just in time for early retirement and a keeper forever.

As it was a 911, man maths convinced me that the financial reality would actually be better, so sod it, and so far it is, but that's not down to me being clever, its the luck of the draw.

Pleased I did it? Obviously yes, not because of the numbers, but because I see it every morning on the drive when I go to work and smile. Tomorrow night, I'm even taking it to a car show - something I've never done before (Cars in the Valley, Shelsley Walsh), which is a splendid drive out in the countryside and a catch up with a few people and other interesting metal. Intend to do a few more, and even formed a little 'Grand Tour' group with some friends for drive outs for no other reason than going for a drive.

Life is too short, buy what you want and enjoy it!

If you have the patience, buying new to your own spec is a no brainer looking at how much second hand ones are at the moment.

I know of a friend who has one of the first 992 C4S in April 2019. He did under 4K miles in his ownership & he’s just traded it in early for a GTS when they are available & only lost £7.5k in depreciation. His old car is now listed with his OPC at £4K more than when it was new in 2019...I think the market is a touch warm given the lack of used cars available, but you only live once as they say!
