Seems I have made a rookie error.

Washed the car a couple of days ago inc. pressure washer underneath. Car has stood for a few days since and when I took it out this morning. It is misfiring and throwing an engine light.

Reading around it seems highly likely that I have introduced moisture to already failing (cracking) coil packs.

Lesson learnt but I guess it was going to happen sooner or later regardless.

I can get a full set of Bosch plugs and Beru coil packs from ECP for £160 so I'm inclined to just do the lot.

What is the most efficient way for the driveway mechanic to tackle this job? It seems that the two methods of access are either via rear wheel arch with wheel off or with car in the air, silencers removed and possibly rear bumper (not sure why).

The first option looks very fiddly but much less disruption. Second option seems to make the actual coil and plug replacement bit much easier but requires much more prep.

Anyone got the tshirt on this one and want to share some wisdom?

I did mine on my 986 on the driveway, one side at a time with the wheel off. Had to unclip the left side plastic arch liner from memory. It wasn't too fiddly. I think there's some special oil you can put on so they don't stick to the tubes for next time you have to remove them. Took a couple of hours, felt a lot crisper after, and you're probably as well off doing the plugs as well while you're down there. edit - I see you were doing the plugs anyway. I found a magnetic probe thing useful to get the plugs out of the tubes as well.

Well I've started. I ended up jacking car up and taking silencer off. I can see how it can be done without but I don't think I had the right combination of tools and it looked very awkward. So far, I've taken rearmost coil pack out on one side only and left it there until the new ones arrived. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to hit any snags. Have had to order new heat shields too. Existing ones are knackered.

Well I have all six coil packs out now. Just waiting on new parts arriving.

I noticed that one of the heat shields is loose. I can see that the studs that hold them are going to break off as soon as I touch them. I can see this is going to be a fun few days!

Yes, I sprayed wd40 on anything I thought I would need to remove a few days before. I think the youtube video I watched recommended removing the ignition relay before doing anything.

I think mine have already been replaced with something weird. 7mm socket won't go over nut. 6mm won't get on. A lot of online talk about using a 13mm socket. Mine look nothing like that. Before I attack them with vice grips, I'm going to try some clips that I've ordered that will by pass existing fixings. If that doesn't work, I suspect I'll need to affix new studs.
