Just wondered what the mentality is?

Guy drove past me yesterday on the motorway in a very nice white 3 series, 58 plate, coupe, had an "M3" badge on the back. No carbon roof, no bonnet bulge and more importantly a single exhaust pipe.

Anybody who doesn't know much about cars will think "that's a nice car" and won't have a clue what an "M" is, anybody who does know will look and think "you're sad".

So why do people do it, if you don't want to advertise it's a 320D or whatever then get the badge removed and have it with nothing on, don't try and make it something it isn't!

Delusion. More could be said, and probably will, but that's what it boils down to.

The same reason why back in the eighties, people used to attach all sorts of chrome addendum to their cars.

Yeah but it doesn't make the car look any better, it's just trying to advertise it as something it isn't.

Don't get me wrong, I put a full red "TDi" badge on my golf when it should have had a silver "i" (150/130bhp) but of course nobody looked and thought "that's not got 150bhp", this isn't the same thing though!!!

Of course it is!

You're still rolling a turd in glitter, no matter how far up the automotive ladder.

I might get some "5.0 v10" badges for mine, and some neon lights while I'm at it.

Aspiration.

We were all young once, however some of the brand new cars with additional badges confuse me.

The worse ones I've seen are the 'M-power' ones off ebay, usually already very faded by the time there on a car.

Not as bad as NISMO stickers on a Citroen which I've seen far too many of.

Saw a special edition 'M' compact in Bridgend yesterday - complete with 'M' badge on bonnet. Yummy.

Nothing wrong with an ///M badge on a BMW with M Sport bits.

M3 badge should be reserved for M3s though etc etc.

I'm with the OP

My first car was a brand-new Cirtoen AX 'Memphis'. The dealer gave me the 'Memphis' badge on some sticky paper and said you can put this on if you want to...

I chucked it in the glovebox and there it stayed...

Fair play to the dealer - he recognised that it was a ste as I thought it was...

Apart from the fact it signifies nothing other than some plastic tat and an overly firm ride you mean?

Tat is probably a little harsh. The M Sport cars are invariably good looking cars.

Its a shame that "Sport" wasn't enough for these cars, and "M" had to be included at the same time .... The M brand was cheapened, and the "Sport" models lost some of their individual merit that the E34, E36, and E30 had, for example.
