From PCGB website

John Tecce posted this about installing a GT3 engine in a Cayman..

"As for the whole 'why aren't we getting a 4.0L GT3 motor' question, you have to noodle over the following:

You can't slam a GT3 motor in a 981 because of several fitment reasons, the biggest being the oil sump tank. (requires re-engineering of the motor and/or unibody for a car that is really a 2nd generation of a previous model)

The Siemens SDI 9.1 used to run all 991s/981s will not spin over 8160. The ECU architecture doesn't allow it. (requires re-engineering of the ECU platform)

Look at the outright engine costs - a 991.1 GT3 motor is $75K to buy new; a 4.0L 991.1 911R motor is $98K and a GT4 motor is $45K. (the car’s price point would land at GT3 levels, which is not wanted by people on either side of the table.)

I don’t doubt that a 4.0L GT3 motor found its way into a 981 in Weissach at one point or another and while there's no doubt that the resources are there to execute everything listed above in a nanosecond, sometimes it just doesn't make sense. Unfortunately you cant just Mr. Potato Head that motor in that car like you can with a lot of other things. It's for this very reason that we convert the existing motors to 4.0L from 3.8L in the exact same fashion that the factory did via a stroke conversion. I know of 1 person on here currently attempting to do this but if you look at the cost to do a project like this, it would be the world's most expensive Cayman on the road ever."

With regard to the 981 Spyder can any owners advise me if they were able to option the electrically folding door mirrors (or have them on their car) as from all the adverts for 2nd hand examples i've never seen them fitted ?

Thanks.

gents, I don't know much about the first Gen Spyder but this car has been sitting around for a while and I miss having a convertible. What is it missing? Is it a good choice?

Maybe the wheels on above car being non spyder wheels made it maybe sit a while.

would say the wheels non Spyder and the DFS chairs are the reasons as most, not all want these 2 favoured options . Just read X press car would put a lot off .

Interesting. I would assume ex press cars get spanked but then very well looked after subsequently.

So wheels and seats then.

thanks guys

Totally gobsmacked if it has any sort of GT3 engine;
I’m sure it will be positioned to outperform the B GTS and sit below the 992

no doubt you have seen this collection ...the private sale one is nice if you can get it for around £45K Most with low miles are way over this ..my Red one a 2011 12.500k miles all the correct boxes ticked full OPC services on time etc will be valued at over £48K I have been offered that by 3 people but not for sale … Spyder ownership is risk free and would say depreciation free if you go low miles with all boxes ticked

Wheels and seats add c£5k to a car I would say. Cars without also take a lot longer to shift.

Just got a quote for the 8yr Major Service for 987 Spyder (done 8,000 miles) and been quoted £1,400 by OPC. Does this sound right? Any tips or ideas to get this for less? Appreciated in advance.

Seems high - will dig my receipts out - note that some dealers don't follow the Porsche UK website pricing; took mine to Brooklands in the end, substantially cheaper that Reading/Guildford.

At the time they wouldn't renew the warranty as the tyres were 5 yrs old (no sign of any perishing and only 3000 miles on them) - last straw for me - going forward no warranty and out of the main dealer network....

Thanks! That’s helpful. Will look at Brooklands. Yep, can’t decide if to do the OPC warranty or not....

JZM have just got a Voodoo Blue 981 Spyder in stock....I remember seeing this car in their showroom a couple of years ago. Looks great! For some reason it’s been serviced with them and not an OPC though. I am sure that’s not an issue mechanically but no idea what that means for long term warranty i.e could you extend it ?

Great looking car, any ideal why it would have 3 stamps in the book already?
