Wow that’s a great video and what a pass to drive any car on.
Massive congrats.... I assure you that you will not regret this decision!

I’ve had mine since new (2015), have done 23k miles and still smile every time I drive it, or even look at it......

Ref Lukes video, I’ve had the pleasure of driving my Spyder up and down the Susten pass on 3 occasions.... and am just planning my next tour to the same passes this July.

Quite simply, this road in this car is my very happiest place :-)

Enjoy

Cheers Boxster 7. Epic pic of your lovely car. I really have obsessed about getting one ever since I watched the promo video on the launch of the 981 Spyder. To me it has always been one of the most stunning cars on the road. Time to clock up some mileage and I can guarantee it won’t be a garage queen.

I remember watching those launch videos, especially hearing the noise it made on the mad fly past bit.... I thought “that can’t be the real sound of the exhaust!”...... but it really is that bonkers on full attack mode... You can but smile...

I remember this one too.....
It also gives me happy memories of driving the 17 mile drive in the Stang, in Sept 18.

We managed go to the Rennsport reunion too at Laguna Seca, where a very very generous Rennlist friend, let me drive his 981 Spyder on the track !!

Very Happy Days !!!

Well after obsessing about buying a Spyder for a VERY long time, today I finally bought one. White with great spec and in concourse condition with 3500 miles on the clock. Got tired of the waiting games and discussions on overs on a 718 and went to have a look at the 981 Spyder at 911virgin. It was indeed love at first sight. Collect on Monday and planning my first road trip with my boy. It had become a total obsession and I have to admit the time spent scanning this forum, autotrader etc was getting unhealthy. I am a very happy chap today. The guys at 911V really know their stuff and were an absolute pleasure to deal with.

Congratulations on a great purchase of a lovely Spyder from Tom @ 911V. I've bought two cars from Tom and sold him my old Cayman R and they are utterly professional.

Like others I was baffled with how long they had it in stock but maybe the launch of the 718 and people holding out for slots made a few people sit and wait until the dealers disappointed them! Great looking car and very similar to mine i've had since December 2018. I'm sure you'll love it.

Say hi to Tom for me when you collect on Monday and enjoy your drive home.

Just booked in my 981 Spyder for its 4 year service at the OPC.

Thankfully they have agreed to match the now removed and discontinued Porsche total-transparency fully inclusive pricing so £995 including VAT including oil service, brake fluid service and new spark plugs so not too horrendous and better than a lot of people have been paying recently for the same (£1,250+ in many cases!)

Now just the decision to make on the extended warranty...…
111 Point check FOC at time of service
£1,190 for 2 year Porsche warranty
£285 for 2 year Porsche assistance

Presume there will be a lot of Spyders coming out of hibernation in time for 4 year servicing so this may be helpful.

Roll on the Spring!

Chris I will do. It was Tom that sold me the car and clearly knows his stuff on everything Porsche. I think a lot of people (me included) were hoping to get a 718 slot and realised this isn’t happening in 2020. An hour before buying the car I viewed a great looking 718 Spyder at Hatfield OPC in Crayon. No question it was a great car but with 1700 miles already on the clock wanted £98,000. I was tempted but when I stood beside the car at 911V which looked like it just rolled off the production line, I couldn’t justify £30,000 extra to myself.

Completely agree - no way is a 718 Spyder a £30k better car than the 981! Arguably the 981 is the better looking car and in my opinion sounds better and has a much more compliant suspension set-up for road use as opposed to the 718 which now has the 718 GT4 suspension hardware. I much prefer driving my 981 Spyder on road to my previous 981 GT4 (which used 991 GT3 suspension) as its so much more compliant and usable on typical British A/B roads. The GT4 would be without doubt the better track car but that's not where I spend most of the time.

Congratulations!
It does become an unhealthy obsession, I spent at least 3 hours a day scouring forums, pages and site for 6 months wobble
Now I have another obsession.. it's called "I'm just going to the garage" I can wholeheartedly agree that the 981 spyder is a beautiful thing to just look at in person.
Hope you enjoy it and I can only hope we have a summer like 2018 wink

Wow, that looks a great trip, I ‘managed’ to luckily be there during Pebble beach an get some access all areas courtesy of AMG Mercedes via a very generous guy with a McLaren I bumped into at the hotel, a great afternoon I won’t forget.

I also drove the 17 mile drive but this was 4 up in a Dodge Journey thingy.. not v cool at all.

981 Spyder's are brilliant cars and are great value compared to the 718 Spyder. But just for a bit of balance from someone who has done lots of miles in both cars; I can’t agree on the comment relating to suspension set up- IMHO the 718 chassis is a massive step on from the 981 and is absolutely bloody brilliant on UK A/B roads. Also looks wise the 981 is a very sexy car, of that there is no doubt, but put them side by side and I know which one I’d choose. Are these differences worth the price variance, of course not, but that’s true of any old vs. new version of the same car - but we all fall for it at some point.

Seriously though - enjoy your Spyder's - they are such a great car smile

Morning R, I hope you're well ? My knee jerk response would be the later car is the better looking, but a comparison of their rear ends tells a slightly different story. I think it fair to say the later car's rear end is definitely more aggressive (specifically the exhausts and diffuser arrangement) but I'm not sure it's better for it, on the contrary, I think it's all starting to look fussy and overly complex when compared with the simpler, cleaner lines of the 981 :

Quite why Porsche feel the need to emblazen their name across the back of every car they produce now, is a mystery to me, all the more so as they didn't do so for the first 45 years ? Either way a mere "Spyder" badge would suffice nicely.

Excuse my poor photo shop skills :

There is one improvement to the 718's rear end, and that's the deletion of the earlier cars awkward reverse lamp that messed up the otherwise neat, uncluttered looks of the 981.

The wheels on the later car are a definite win too.

As I said earlier in this thread, I think the ex-press Guards red 981 Spyder sans aircon and nav, that had PCCB's that struggled to sell for so long, would have been my choice.
A trip to Herr Ehresmann to liberate some additional ponies (circa 420-425) and perhaps in time a Sharkwerks re-gear of the transmission and a decent head unit to enable web-based sat nav and stream audio, would make the perfect long term keeper 981 Spyder smile
