It doesn’t feel it! Dreadful dreadful dreadful
I had a 718 GTS for the day, was ok I thought, would not buy one myself. but then again would not by a 981 either out of choice.the performance is well above the 3.8 imo, I was hitting 127 mph on the little run I do with loans, no where close in the 981's
718 is a Spyder really, as a lot of the bits from the spyder came across to the 718, it's a mismatch the 981 Spyder and 718 until the new car is launched.
if the 981 GTS had 19" wheels and hydraulic steering that would be the car, i'll keep the 3.4 and just free flow it a little.
shame nothing midengined has been that great since the 987.2 cars ;-( just OK !
I think if the 981 Spyders come down a bit more, fit one with 19" wheels to shorten the gearing (keep the tyre profile the same), and 430bhp would be ok.
But the GT4 is a far better platform to make a nicer drivers car ! as the PTV and EPS is very poor on the 981 Spyder, and on the GT4 those 2 things are night and day better. Also a tad under tyred for the 3.8 midrange on the P zero 265's I thought. 19" 245/275 would be a good fit, offer better turn in and a bit more traction, while shortening the gearing, a triple win.
Porsche were so close with the GT4 and Spyder, still a modders dream though and were great value list. I would not pay overs on them, not quite good enough for that.

Took the Spyder in to local OPC this morning (car wouldn't have been happy being woken from a warm slumber in the garage to freezing cold rain / sleet / snow and rush hour traffic!) for some warranty work before the 3 years expires next week! Also having 1st MOT and 111 point check for warranty extension.
Anyway - whilst the Spyder is great the courtesy car is a 718 Boxster and its my first experience of the 718......What a terrible car - Its like driving an underpowered Impreza engined MR2. Awful engine, awful sound, cramped cabin (appreciate i'm 6ft4"), fussy interior etc etc. All in all it made me appreciate the car I own compared with the cars people are now faced with buying.
Lets see if I warm to it over the next 4-5 days.....
Cramped cabin? I thought the 718 was exactly the same dimmensions as a 981 . Minor vent and positioning changes .Anyway - whilst the Spyder is great the courtesy car is a 718 Boxster and its my first experience of the 718......What a terrible car - Its like driving an underpowered Impreza engined MR2. So your saying the 981 is cramped too? Is the spyder bigger as again i thought the same as a 981?

Don't the sports seats sit lower than all bucket seats? That's what i found anyhow, and i adjust them to as low as possible.
They certainly don't sit lower in the 718 compared with the 981 buckets. I always found the 918 seat design allows you to actually get your bum lower in the seat too compared with the comfort chair.chrisABP said:

Just joined PistonHeads and looking for some advice on Spyder ownership. Have been obsessing about buying a Spyder for a long time now and just never quite felt time was right with the ‘always just round the corner’ new 718 model on the way. However Ive got really bored waiting.
Have seen some really nice 981 Spyders which seem to be obtainable in the low £70k’s mark at the moment. I have had a LOI in for almost 2 years with my local OPC which carries no guarantee for the new Spyder model. I have had 3 previous Porsche’s all bought from different dealers so have little history with any dealership to leverage. Therefore waiting another 6 months is probably a 50/50 at best at getting the new model.
So all factors considered is this a nuts time to be buying a Spyder when the 718 Spyder (or whatever they finally call it) seems just around the corner? Is it likely the 981 models will take a big hit on value on release of the new car? Not sure what has happened historically in this regard with previous change of Spyder models.
All opinions appreciated for sure.

No one knows, Porsche need to make some money, times have been slow and 718 not selling well. So imo I think Porsche will make a lot more next time.Just joined PistonHeads and looking for some advice on Spyder ownership. If you want a drivers car which will go up, get a 987.2 Spyder, it’s a far more honest car and a better drive. Save £20k and buy the JZM one.

Given the pricing of all new Porsches, and general inflation, to me logic says the next spyder will be at least £10k more than the old one when specced.Just joined PistonHeads and looking for some advice on Spyder ownership. I can’t see the old ones dropping much below 60k any time soon when you look at the cars that are below that....
911R had a quick look on JZM and the 987 is a great low mileage car. The 981 they have in voodoo blue looks the business also. Don’t live to far so may go and have a look at both. I just can get past the styling of the 981 which for me is one of the best looking cars on the road south of £100k.
It’s never a bad time. You’ll notice that there are only 7 now for sale on the Porsche locator. Why? It’s nearly spring and this is when people start to buy. There were 12 not so long ago so don’t miss the boat. Prices will strengthen a bit too. I bought mine in the depths of winter.
Also in terms of spec, there are few available with pcm, buckets and full leather. If the car is missing one of these options it’ll be harder to sell generally. PCM stupid I know as google maps is great on your phone but lack of leather is usually an issue is such an expensive car.

JZM 987 is nice! But at 50k? Not sure. That’s down to the mileage!
Be £60k next year, you have to think of the cost to own, not buy.Plus it,s a better drivers car by a country mile.
981 are dropping and don’t drive as well, free choice though of course.
I was offered £55k for mine last month, but it’s worth way more than that to me and if you look at EU prices 80k euro , this car has not caught on as yet for the Uk.
Last of an era and all that, while I have no doubt the 718 Spyder will be better to drive than the 981 car in every way.
