Hi Richard
I felt the same between the 987.2 Spyder and a mates 981 Cayman S albeit with PDK. The Cayman was a very nice car but not in a special weekend treat kinda way.
I don't think you live to far from me if you want to pop down and look round mine.
I could be tempted into selling it if it's what you are after.
PM if you wish to.
Cheers

hi all
Thinking of getting a 987 Spyder.
Looking for a bit of guidance in terms of hows it feels compared to the 981 Cayman S which I had in PDK but found difficult to enjoy due to the long gearing and the speeds required to get the engine into its power band and 'singing'. Also I didn't find the car special enough when having it as a garage queen taking it out a couple of weekends a month.
With the above in mind a deem manual transmission to a must and hope that this and the added sense of occasion of the Spyder will give me what I'm looking for. Is this a reasonable expectation?
I will look to do a couple of gentle track days per year as well as a couple of trips to France (I'm based near Manchester) and some nice drives out at the weekend. Probably c. 5-6k miles per annum.
Doesn't really need to be a convertible and the only other options I can think of are a Cayman R (prefer looks of the Spyder) or ordering a new A110.
Is there a specific forum worth me joining to further research potential ownership?
cheers
You’ll not get much in the way of common sense here unfortunately but FWIW. Thinking of getting a 987 Spyder.

Spyder will be lower and firmer than the Cayman S, it will have a proper LSD too and likely be lighter. All of which will help on track days. It will certainly feel peppy. People harp on about long gearing but I never find it an issue the car pulls well and revs a little higher than a standard 987. With a short shift fitted the change is lovely.
The car does feel special, I use mine in the same way you’d plan to use yours and it’s always fun to roll It out the garage. It feels way more special than it’s Boxster roots.
They are spec sensitive. You need manual, PSE, buckets, chrono, and Spyder alloys as a minimum to get the Spyder experience. Ceramics would be the cherry on top but they are rare and a potential wallet destroyer should anything need replaced.
There are no Spyder specific forums AFAIK but there is the Porsche Boxter Spyder (UK) group on Facebook.
Hope this helps.

Largely agree this.

I wouldn’t touch a 981 if you paid me. Too much smoke and mirrors on here, by the 981 club. 987 far better.
Depends what you want, better for posing, but worse for driving, PH is more a badge and posing forum though. Most would not touch a £40k 10 year old car even if every one said it was the best car ever made in the world. To most a 987 is too old and too cheap to be seen in, it’s that simple.
In fact i am amazed that every review of the car did not carp on about it being ok , but not as good as the 987 as obviously it was a step backward. none that i read did. Age of the car and cost is immaterial. I am looking to get another S1 Exige which would be 20 years old and much cheaper than a 981 Spyder . not to replace the Spyder but as its different, I have had three and i thought they were just about perfect.(for me anyway)
To quote one of the lotus boys. :Can't comment on the 981, but my 987 felt as nimble as a fat bird after a day's free grazing in Greggs, compared to the Exige." So not everyone has a laminated poster of a 987 about their bed, do they? Horses for course's as in just about everything else in life

These 2 seem keenly priced from a OPC, just a 1 year ago they would have been near £80k.

the market don't like painted trim, always been the case, always will be the case.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

You can change the bottom and dash trim, but the doors you cannot very easy.
the yellow also has the comfort seats which is a none seller and both are high miles for Spyders.
Thanks, I suppose the painted trim could easily be wrapped in carbon.
Understand some see them as high miles, but under 30k is low IMHO.
What about this one?

They're both virtually unsaleable IMO..https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

The yellow one with the horrid yellow trim ,no leather and no buckets will be tough to give away let alone sell..!
The guards red one is very high mileage for a Spyder, again not the best colour combo and being an ex-press car very tough to shift..Both cars are the older 2015 cars won't help matters..

Much nicer car IMO and a bargain despite the higher than average miles...The fact that it doesn't have PCM is a glaring omission and probably knocks a minimum £5K off the value..Guards red unfortunately not a good Spyder colour for resale although i like it..Understand some see them as high miles, but under 30k is low IMHO.

I disagree on the red not being a good spyder colour, think its suits it perfectly, that car looks superb to me!!
As i said i also like GR on the Spyder although i much prefer mine which is Carrera white metallic..The market seems to discount both Yellow and Red Spyders compared to Carrera White,GT silver or Agate hence the lower prices shown above..Newbie 981 Spyder owner here and couldn't be happier with the car. She's a real beast and wants to be driven hard. I really wanted this model for the epic engine note and I haven't been disappointed. Long gearing doesn't bother me - I'd say my only criticism would be the steering as my Carrera T being newer has better feel. Anyway, the Spyder and the Carrera T do make a very complimentary pair: both manuals with LWB's but very different experiences to drive. The Spyder having a much heavier clutch and firmer gear shift compared to the T's light clutch and easy throw. The Spyder is angry and the T is much more sedate. I did consider a manual GT3 but for half the price I felt the Spyder made more sense and is plenty fast enough. I look forward to hearing more reviews of the 718 but the 981 certainly ticks all the boxes and I hope will be a keeper.

Nice spec minus the reversing camera. I've found the reversing camera handy as the humps give it very poor visibility out the back. Understand some see them as high miles, but under 30k is low IMHO.
