Hey everyone

Just wondering what the rules are on Sticker Licence plates on cars. Are they allowed ? Was thinking with my Cayman S being white that a white sticker licence would look really nice on the front rather than that massive plate holder !

Thoughts ?

Cheers

Mike

Mike,

I'm sure it would look fine and not at all out of place if you had a Westfield,Caterham or a classic E-type etc etc, but I think it would look more than a little odd on your Cayman.

I would asume there is no legal reason why you could not do it?

Just think the front plate looks silly as it takes up so much of the front bumper (prob had been living in america too long to notice) so thought maybe a way around it was to put a sticker plate, but then i guess i will need to patch up any holes that are in the bumper and paint it too...

Hmmm, that may just make me want to leave it alone now

You would likely get away with it until a policeman having a quiet day spotted you, believe it's against the law

If its an age related plate then it needs to be reflective (IIRC also post 72). Still, it's just an MOT retest type fine, no points (again, IIRC).

AFAIK the latest number plate regulations nominate a specific plastic material from which the backing plate must be made.

But I understand the issue.

I told my dealer NOT to screw on those big black Porsche number plate holders. The dealer wouldn't fit stick-on plates on for me - so we compromised that (i) they supplied the car and the plates, and (ii) I bought some sticker strips and stuck the plates on myself when taking delivery of the car!

A 3/4 plate mounted straight on the bumper looks pretty good.

I had a square one stuck on the front of a Mini Cooper in the 1970s.

A beat bobby stepped out into the road and booked me.

This was quite a relief. He missed the two bald tyres, inoperative handbrake and horn and exhaust broken in front of the silencer.

Then his boss wrote to say no further action.

That was my lucky day. It's all been downhill since then...hehe

The number plate must be fastened to the first vertical surface of the car (normally the bumper). The photo shown in the web site was nearly horizontal and would typically be a fail.

From memory, there is nothing in construction and use that says screws must be used and at one point the government were talking about either tamperproof screws or adhesive with easily damaged plates to try to reduce number plate theft. But that has not been passed into law yet.

Yes, the number plate must be vertical to be fully legal.

As with all these minor details, provided you have a clearly legible plate nobody really cares for 99% of the time. But once you fall under Mr Bib's spotlight it just gives him an excuse to nick you for something. Waving your MOT certificate at him won't make the blindest bit of difference - it doesn't change the rules.

If you PM M4TT C who owns a Scottish 987 and owns a garage he can fill you in on his fitment.

His is the yellow Cayman at the start of this video: Click to play
You can't see it close up but his is a sticker.
