is 20k interval really what most owners go for? seems like a stretch for me. How often do you change your oil in a Cayman?

Once a year at the annual service. I only do 6k-7k miles a year though.

There's no way I'd leave oil unchanged for 20k miles.

As above. I change mine every year.

I have also recently started using Millers Nanotech which is reputed to reduce friction, which can't be a bad thing given the bore scoring issues.

I used to change it every year.
It blew up anyway, so now it gets only what the handbook says: every 20k/2years

I've been pricing up OPC oil change (supplying the oil myself) as its almost a year since a major service on my 997 turbo.

OPC said its two years but I've always changed it more often. I'm only likely to have covered 2.5-3k miles in the year, and they said its not needed.

Perhaps I'm over servicing and modern engines don't need it?

It's about £120 all in if you supply your own oil. Next to the other running costs for any Porsche that's pretty cheap to look after you engine properly.

I've seen oil analysis results from other cars (albeit older ones) that shows even modern oils start to degrade surprisingly quickly. I wouldn't want to be using the same batch after more than a year or 6000 miles.

Are you saying this helps reduce scoring?

On average, about every 3k in my 993.

Its the best thing you can do for your engine. 20k is folly. I don't even let my daily Insignia do that.

OK, this is only a sample of one, but these numbers speak for themselves!

Hartech are of the opinion that it could contribute towards avoiding bore scoring.

From what I can gather it coats surfaces with a film of some sort (sorry for the lack of technical knowledge) that helps to reduce friction and therefore could assist in preventing the dreaded bore scoring.

Any little bit that can help is good enough for me. smile
