I fully understand you may not wish to give exact figures, but are you happy with the deal?

I've mentioned the figures on the 718 GT4/Spyder thread so I'm not precious about them. I got £42k for my car as a part-ex towards my 718 GT4. I've owned it from new, it was a well specced manual with the exception of no Sat Nav.

I paid just over £62k for it (including a ~£1500 discount from memory), so £5k/year depreciation from new was more than acceptable to me!

That is a good deal - best wishes with the GT4. I had a CGTS a couple of years back and it's a car I would go back to, though possibly a BGTS, as I'm a recent convert (sorry) to open top motoring.

As a Cayman 981S owner contemplating a change, has anyone switched from the S to GTS and did you think the additional cost was worthwhile afterwards?

I must admit I'm struggling to see what I'd get for the extra £10+K which is what I recon the difference would be, even on a private sale basis both ways without any dealer margins to take into account. The differential seems to be about the same as when I bought mine so not sure it's justified through lower depreciation.

Serious question, not trying to score points.

It's all down to how much you want the GTS "stuff" - alcantara interior, external styling, slight power bump etc. Otherwise it's just a well specced S so they're similar cars.

I only wanted a GTS.

I've got a S with the GTS body kit and a few of the options, I've also got Stage 2 tune on it which bumps it above stock GTS power.

As an S owner (now GT4 981) it's not worth the price difference between the S and the GTS. Unless your S is really poverty spec (no exhaust, pasm, standard seats etc.) you're not getting 10k more in the driving experience. It's 10k worth of bumpers, alcantara and desirable mechanical options.

^^^ Agree. 981 GTS is mainly about the GTS bits; the driving experience is very similar. Although the basic GTS is a value package in terms of the stuff like Sport Chrono, PSE and adaptive engine mounts that are included.

I think that a well specd ‘GTS’ elevates the Cayman to a more desirable level, and all the little touches add up.
But, each will sit in its own price bracket - 981Ss are going to be £30-40k, 981GTSs are going to be £40-50k+, and the new 718GTS 4.0s are going to be £60-75k+
The new car will compress prices a bit, but they’re not going to squish the market as there will only be a certain number retailed.
The ‘cost to change’ (upgrade) is always a dilemma, especially for those who buy their cars with real money.
Still think the NA Flat-6 981 Cayman/Boxsters are a brilliant package, new (4.0) or used.

Wholly agree. I'd never sell or buy privately following my last experience trying to buy. I was given the absolute runaround, unfortunately.

Thanks guys, pretty much confirms my thinking. My S is pretty high spec - PASM/Chrono/PTV/PSE/PDLS/sports plus seats/auto dimming mirrors/PCM/Bose/dual climate/cruise/full leather/ etc; actually better spec'd in terms of "standard" options than most GTSs by the look of it.

If the GTS differences are therefore just down to the cosmetics, I can't justify the extra cost.

It WAS the case that as the last of the F6 cars the GTS had the kudos as the last of the F6 cars AND most of the spec that MOST of the buyers (NOT me!) wanted. The result was that GTS cars were far higher prices than similar high spec S cars. Sanity is now returning with advent of the 718/6 - and GTS and S 981s are coming closer on prices.

There are a lot more GTS models about now too - 997.2, 991.1, 991.2, 981, 718, 718 4.0, Macan etc etc. The GTS badge is not as exclusive as it was at the time the 981 was new.

Still blummin' cracking cars though biggrin

looking on the Porsche approved used list the price difference looks the same as always to me - approx £10k.

i agree the 'last of the breed' kudos is gone with the release of the GTS 4.0, but i think the 981 GTS will always have the better engine sound to its advantage vs the 718, whether F4T or 4.0. plus the price difference between a 981GTS and a 718 4.0 is around what? 20 - 30k depending on spec?

there are indeed a lot more GTS models but you could say that about GT models too.

there have always been more 981 GT4s for sale on the OPC used list vs 981 GTSes, and there are quite a few GT3s too, though the numbers are similar to 991 GTSes.

there are way too many 718 F4T GTSes though. almost seems like anyone that wanted the 2.5l went for the GTS instead of the S.

Yep, they knew it was coming so they held out. I suspect the same is happening with the 992 as well...

would anyone be interested in buying the GTS at the top of this page?

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

note: no Covid19 discount is available. i'll only consider it if i get a good offer and my hope is that i can pick up a well priced GT4 later in the year. car is in fantastic condition and still has OPC warranty til the end of this year. 25k miles.

TBH i'm not even sure i'd sell... half of me would love a (981) GT4, the other half of me thinks the GTS is more car than i'll ever need.

car is a pretty rare spec manual GTS with sports chassis, buckets and PTV (and a whole load of extras). could be a good opportunity for all involved.
