I'm ordering a new Cayman and planning to get 20 inch Carrera Classic wheels without PASM. I have read it can be a harsh ride and of course depends on road conditions, but wondered if anyone had any thoughts/experience to share?

You will be fine, the 20" wheel still is a 35 series tyre like the gen 2 19" wheel.

The 981 chassis is much more compliant than the 987. I have a 987 with 19's and pasm and the 981 I test drove was on 20's without pasm and was the smoother ride of the two.

That makes sense Trev...I remember when my 987 was being serviced a good while ago, they lent me a 981 with 20s but I can't remember if it had PASM. I didn't even notice or think about the ride, so it must have been fine (I was just thinking, I want one!)

Yep. I'm getting X73 SS on a GTS. Comfy car is comfy.

I test drove a 981 Cayman S PDK on 20" without PASM over the weekend.
It is brilliant - I had it in sport (assuming that it was a PASM car) for most of the time - I got to almost the end of the time and thought let me put the suspension into normal and then sport plus mode, only to realise there was no button - hence on the normal passive dampers - I checked with the sales guys (OPC Reading) and they verified.
I was very impressed - you can feel the stiffness of the chassis and suspension working nicely and naturally - very well judged - I felt it rode much better than my 997 GTS on PASM. Would be really interested to try x73 - so understand what the delta is there.

Hi ... new to the forum and new to Porsche, so nice to able to contribute.

I took delivery of an 18 mth old 981 S with the Carrera 20" classic wheels. The car doesn't have PASM. It's very compliant on the road ... no bangs ... even over the odd small pot hole (very small that is ... I try to be careful).

My Dad has a 3 yr old 987 with 19" wheels and no PASM ... don't think mine is any harsher.

I'd say they were both smooth as silk.

My MX-5 roadster was very noisy and bouncy in comparison.

Paul.

I had this for a day after dropping my 987 2.7 Boxster with 18" S wheels fitted into Porsche Leicester, first impressions were, looks great and it will probally ride terrible with those 20" alloys fitted, how wrong I was,it actually rides noticeably better than my 987 with no tramlining etc and very compliant, the car didn't have PASM fitted..bodyshell also felt a fair bit stiffer...I love my 987 to bits but easy to see where the games moved on...

I must say ... I am rather enjoying it :-)

Having driven my Dad's 987s and my 981s .. I can't see anyone not enjoying either of them.

There are improvements obviously .. and I'm sure the new rigidity makes a difference .. but I find the acceleration on this thing so scary (with a big smile) that it will be a while before I really test it around country roads.

As it stands .. the noise, performance and driving sensation under the type of driving I've done in both is pretty on a par .. Yes ... I know ... I'm a girl ... and an ugly one at that ... but she's so beautiful and I don't want to hurt her.

Paul.
