I think I’ll put all my facts together and try to get a sensible response from the DVLA. All the comments already posted seem to suggest as you say, that something is not quite right with the classification of my my Boxster.
Thanks for your views.

Sorry for resurrecting what seems to be a dormant topic, but like many, I can't really get my head around this tax banding. I have a 2.7 Tiptronics Boxster, first registered on 27th June 2006. Its emissions are stated as 250 G/Km. I am now paying £735 a year road tax, made even more staggering when you take into account that in the last year, I have driven it less than 300 miles.
Not much of any incentive to keep it for much longer, sadly!
Would it not be better to SORN the car and just tax it when you're going to use it? I know its a bit of a faff but £735 isn't insignificant.

The Parker's link in the first post of this topic has been updated with the latest figures, so is probably a good starting point.

Unfortunately, it's the first registration date of 27th June 2006 that's causing the higher charge.

Emissions of 250g/km would put a car into Band L (£730), but cars registered before 23rd March 2006 were put into Band K (£430) as a maximum, even if they emitted the amounts that normally put them into Bands L or M. It was done like this so as not to penalise people who had just bought higher emission cards before the new tax bands were introduced.

I had a 2008 2.7 Boxster which I bought in 2009. From memory there was a difference in tax bands on some 2.7 versions because of the gearbox and consequent emissions which made them more expensive to tax. I only remember this because when I was looking to buy I actively avoided looking at cars in the higher band.

It seems ridiculous now when the tax for my wife's 2.7 981 Cayman is I believe £360 a year and next year my 4.0 718 Boxster will only cost £190.

That explains it, car was registered Sept 2005. Vaguely remember something about that now that you've mention it.

It certainly does. The 4.0 718 seems to have an output of 247g/km for the manual so almost exactly the same as the 987 but with a £190 charge rather than £730 for the post-March 2006 cars!

Taxing a car all year when only doing 300 miles?
I don’t get it, unless its 20 miles a month, in which case buy a different car!!
Yes, the system has some anomalies, my other petrol car is £20 a year, a lot less than some newer electric cars of the same size, you can also use these anomalies to your advantage.
