Anyone turbocharged a 986 or early Cayman?

Don't you have an Impreza? How do you want your 'ideal car' to compare with that?
Yes I had an Impreza WRX, 2002. I mapped it to around 260 bhp. Nothing drastic. It was the PERFECT car for me in terms of throttle response (is that the right words?) and Zippiness. It certainly didn't feel like a Turbo as the power was on right from the start, but very docile with a light clutch and steering.
One of the best cars I've owned actually, just a shame about the image.
Hey thanks Baz for that huge reply. All a bit over my head as you've probably gathered.
Hello.
I'm looking to do similar, I'd opt for a low boost turbo build on stock compression, with air/water charge cooling, and the rad at the front - perhaps in front of the centre cooling rad - tbc.
I'd build it myself and would probably have change back from £3k for parts only,
Good luck with your build.
Regards, Biscuit

IF you turbo it properly, it could be very good fun. I'm thinking the sort of turbo install where you get zero boost until about 3,500 rpm, then lots of extra shove all the way to around 6.5 - 7k rpm. The sort of turbo charging from the days when turbos were fun. If you go for a modern style turbo that just boosts torque at low revs, then runs out just when things should be getting interesting, then it won't give you what you're looking for. If this were me, I'd look to turbo the 3.2S unit for best results.
Sounds like you may have owned a R5 Turbo at some point? Great to drive, especially when you hang the revs at around 3000 and then floor it. The turbo was incredible (for those days and as a young lad!).Have a look for username Ecsy on here. He has a history of putting turbocharged Audi engines in the back of boxsters.
Shame his last one went up in flames but I imagine he could give you feedback on cost/time involved and the differences in driving characteristics.

I'm not sure I'd call it a history. To me that implies a track record and multiple installations. Shame his last one went up in flames but I imagine he could give you feedback on cost/time involved and the differences in driving characteristics.

Either way semantics, I thought his knowledge might be of interest/use for the OP that’s all.

Part were or maybe still are the UK agent. They have done Boxsters and Caymans with this kit. There are a couple of owners who are also members here. Bennachie said:
Anyone told Porsche that about 718?
Very different. Smaller engine and Porsche would have thoroughly tested it and designed cooling and airflow to cope even in extreme conditions. Very different to adding a turbocharger and hoping for the best. I agree with what others have said, turbocharging a six cylinder Cayster is an admission of having bought the wrong car in the first place. They have never been about all out performance, precision and handling is their forte.Even a718 went up in flames, albeit an isolated incident but have never heard of it happening an n/a Cayster

I'm only a sample of 1, but I've never had any heat problems with my turbo Boxster S (987.1). My car has the additional central radiator though, so I don't know if that makes a difference. TPC have sold hundreds of kits in the US and though I've read about people having various issues, I've never seen heat being one of them.Even a718 went up in flames, albeit an isolated incident but have never heard of it happening an n/a Cayster

As for having bought the wrong car, I bought the car with the turbo already fitted, so I definitely bought the right car. I partially agree with you though, as I don't think it's a project I would have done myself. My car is a daily driver, so the extra power, and especially torque, I find useful. If it was just a weekend toy and I wanted pure NA thrills, then I'd probably not have bought it. In fact I have a Mk1 MX5 for that sort of thing.
