Hi guy’s,
Looking for some advise on purchasing an R, new to the world of Porsche and wanted to know what common issues to look for? If there are any big ticket service items or common issues that need to be addressed etc.
What are servicing costs like at a specialist?
Are there any specialist that offer a pre sale inspection?
Cheers
Adam

Some niggly items eg coolant crossover pipes, rotted radiators, tired dampers etc
Gearshift cables can also go
Some say underbraked as standard
Exhaust valves / connections rust
No generic engine or box issues with these
Rpm, JZM, Ashgood, 9e are all specialists who know them inside out. I had a minor service done at Porsche recently for £650
They can be warrantied so consider that if a car you find has full OPC history
Spec is key:
Carbon buckets
PSE
Manual
Spyder wheels
Climate
Sports chrono
Sports steering wheel
We can point you in the direction of a veritable “investment” car in green for £60k if you are mad or loaded
Or like everyone else you’ll prob end up with a white one for £40-45k because that’s the right money and there are more white than any other colour

Finding another Porsche that has similar or equal performance to a 964 RS isn’t overly difficult, my guess is a Gen 2 987 Boxster or Cayman would be fulfil that brief, however you’ll not get close to the driving experience provided by the older car, nor indeed the tactility or engagement.
As for the R being anything like as “special” as the RS, it doesn’t come close I’m afraid.
And neither does the cost at about 33pc ! As for the R being anything like as “special” as the RS, it doesn’t come close I’m afraid.

I’d agree…had lots of different Porsche’s over the years..987 3.4, 993 Turbo, 997 GT3, 993 Targa, 997 Carrera, 997 R, 991 GTS, Tutthilll ‘74 Backdate and a few others…
For fun on the road, the R and Spyder are at the top of the tree for me. All the others have been great to own and drive but the size, poise and sheer usability of the little 987’s make them perfect for my driving style and the roads around me.
Great little sports cars and a complete antidote to todays overblown, overpowered, over tech’d, numb (in comparison) cars available new.
Did you have the lime green 74/5 car ? Like a 2.7 mfi impact bumper ? They built this for me . Was lovely but by the time I’d paid Tuthills I was virtually bankrupt ! When this was built it was still ‘sensible’ money…circa £85k ish from memory. Fantastic car, many many smiles per mile, the sound absolutely sublime on Jenvey throttle bodies, pops, bangs, the lot from the SS Dansk exhaust.

Markets changed...it's not 2021 anymore and sellers still don't seem to realise the difference between Dealer and Private prices.

The Cayman, any Cayman, does what it says on the tin, and it does amazingly well (brilliantly some may say) but it falls well short of pretty much any aircooled car (and doesn’t come anywhere close to a 964 RS) when the metrics are tactility and engagement, and even if the prices of the 964 RS fell by 50% and the prices of Cayman R’s doubled, nothing would change from that perspective.
I didn’t publicise the fact, but I bought a Gen 2 987 3.4S last Summer (it’s the white car currently up for sale at 911Virgin) I bought it right, and it’s a cracking car with a great spec, but I drove it on three occasions late last Summer/early Autumn and quickly realised it didn’t engage or excite me at all, so Tom and Dan kindly sold it on my behalf earlier this year.
In the brief time I owned it, I realised it was every bit as quick as the Guards red R I owned, but was actually more comfortable and quieter than the R, but ultimately it was never going to be a car I’d bond with or indeed open the garage door on with any degree of relish when it came to the thought of driving it.
For all their brilliance, the mid-engined 987/981/718 cars are just too easy to drive quickly, and too anodyne, ultimately they’re a polished consumer product, and thus lack the depth of character a 911, or more accurately any 911 pre 991 (and some may even may say pre 997.1) has as an intrinsic part of its DNA, but rest assured, that doesn’t make them bad cars, merely different.

is it the one with the blue wheels as that looks brilliant....and if so was that a factory option at the time?https://911virgin.com/listings/cayman-987-2-3-4s-m...

I’d say it’s the going rate in an asset bubble that’s probably nearing its peak. But rest assured, when I say I bought it “right” last Summer, I did
And trust me when I say the “clown” wheels look far better than the murdered out gloss black ones...

Dare you to say that the next RS owner you meet at the local CnC
GT3 RS is probably special enough to pull it off….a normal Cayman S is not.Of course I wouldn’t say that to an owner, in person or on a forum.
But, a car that’s currently for sale, doesn’t suit baby blue wheels or have them from factory is fair game for comment (even if some find it a little harsh).

That's funked, and I also like how the passenger seat has been washed down. The passenger must have literally st themselves.

i think that is rain water. it always seems with these places they leave these cars with broken windows to the elements.....at least put a tarpaulin over it.
