Thanks guys. Thought it must be possible and I'll bear it in mind in my search.

Quick question to the cognoscenti; can the sport shifter be retro fitted?
Yes definitely can be done - I'd consider cup cables as well. Tried a car with this mod and it made a massive difference.

Excuse my ignorance here, but what is the difference with the cables and how did it effect the character of the shift? I have to say that, from a driving point of view, the shift on my car is I feel one of its weaker points.

cables a cable, it's the ends which are more solid over the plastic which snap if you are heavy handed.
Cannot see it changing the shift one bit. better off with a Function 1st bush kit for the shifter unit.

But the shift is great in the R and Spyder so have you got a Short shift fitted ?

I agree, the shift in my R (short-shift from factory) is perfectly weighted, precise and a pleasure to use. Prefer it to the shift on the GT4, somehow feels more 'natural'...

Yeah, mines got a factory fitted short shift kit on it. Maybe just personal preference, but I've never particularly liked the feel of the cars shift. I preferred the shift of the 981 GTS manual I drove (think that was the most recent manual Porsche I've driven, but I lose track).

Maybe I am heavy handed, I've had my gear selector cable snap 3 times in a year - all fixed under warranty though. I have the standard shifter and for me it's the worst part of the car frown

Well the deed is done and I'm back in the game. Probably paid too much and will now watch the market correct itself and prices tumble, but hey ho - life's short, deadly and earnest.

Maybe one shouldn't go back to an old love, but I have such fond memories of my old CR that I feel confident it'll be OK. My route to this decision was through the thought of chucking a whole load more money at my 964 to reduce weight (Pole Positions and whatnot) to make it faster, when really the CR did it all out of the box. I always thought the 997 GTS should have had the aluminium GT3 doors, buckets and LSD to be truly perfect, so it went and I'm back in a CR with a fair bit of change in my pocket!

Spec, as I am sure someone will ask:

Platinum Silver (rather pleased with this. Maybe Peridot would have been first prize, but both my GTSs were white so didn't want that again and not so keen on the other colours in the range).
Manual
Buckets
Boxster Spyder wheels black
PSE
Sport Chrono
PCM with audio interface
Xenons that go round corners
Leather dash/door tops
Bose
Auto dipping mirrors/rain sensor

Missing:
Short shift (hence questions)
Wiper delete (i.e. it has this unnecessary appendage. May remove it - what do you think?)
Air Con (eek!). In fact I'm not worried about this at all. I often turned off the air con in my Porsches as I usually have the windows open to better enjoy the sensations involved in driving them, plus it'll only ever go for short blasts along the blessed roads in the Welsh borders where I live. So to my mind it simply saves weight and money (fuel, regassing etc).

17k miles on a 61 plate. 2 years of Porsche warranty, four brand new tyres (as it was still on the originals), rev range as if driven by my granny and no service until May 2020. Quite pleased.

Perth OPC car - looked lovely so congratulations and welcome back to the Cayman R fold!

Definitely get the short shift (maybe get the OPC to install before collection?) Rear wiper would drive me mad but i'm sure easily removed and the lack of AC isn't the end of the World if you won't miss it.

When are you collecting?

Thanks both, and yes it is the Perth car. Such a long way away that they're transporting it to me but haven't set a date yet. Weather this weekend looking grim so no rush.

The short shift does increase the stiffness of the change, especially when cold, so I thought I would try it first in comparison to my first one and the GTS, which to be honest was never as sweet as the CR.

Wiper not ideal but I am sure a solution will present itself. Either that or I'll stop noticing like I did on the GTS. Bloody 964 has one too. Why on earth did anyone bother to spec as I've never had cause to use it?

Lucky my CR does not have a rear wiper but my old Viper green Cayman Sport S did which i thought spoilt the lines.
But one has to be a little flexible on CR specs as long as it has most of ones wish list.

Given market conditions, I take it you didn't pay full asking price?

I did not, no, though they were resistant to giving away too much.

Hope you enjoy it fully! Ticked all my boxes apart from air con. I think Design911 do a rear wiper delete...

Paul - please look at Slippy's explanation. It's the main reason why the cup cables feel so much more engaging. Please ignore David's comment, I'd wager that he's never tried a Cayman with cup cables. I have, and I'm speaking from actual experience. The cup cable makes for a very positive shift, it feels like you'd imagine an open gate shift would be - extremely precise and satisfying. It's one of the actual mods I regret not doing on my Cayman R, I think it would have been more worthwhile than getting it chipped.

The car I tried was a heavily modded Cayman in the midlands a few years back and my favourite aspect of that car was the gearshift!

Better to forge ahead than live life on the question of "What if....?" The right spec, low miles and well pampered cars will hold their money all the same, but don't let the low miles stop you using it as you try to keep them below that 20k boundary!!

Mine is on 37.4k now so probably ready to be scrapped eek, but it still feels box fresh other than a new rattle on the rear passenger side somewhere near the speaker/oddment box (I think its the tailgate - sounds metallic).

Personally, although I ruled out cars with the wiper I wouldn't mess about trying to remove it if it has one.

Welcome back!

You've got me interested! Sounds like what I'd like. How much work is involved in fitting these? DIY option? And what sort of cost? This may go on my to do list.
