Long time lurker here.
Have followed this thread for a while now, has been quite amusing and surreal at times! Good to see these cars generate so much positive feeling amongst their owners though.
I have owned a Z3M Couple for a number of years now, its had a great innings with me but it is time for a change and will be going up for sale shortly.
I'm drawn heavily towards either a Cayman R or a 996 GT3. I know there is a bit of a price variation between the two and that is certainly making a strong case for the R.
I'm not so bothered about spec or mileage. A good clean well maintained car is more important - Although i haven't this year, I normally do a few track-days in a year - Manual is clearly the favoured choice amongst the vocal members, but would a PDK actually be a better option on track ( not to mention better value and more choice)?
Hopefully i'll post some picture in here (or a 996 thread) soon.
They are a great little track car with a few simple mods. Mine is PDK and it’s great on track, it’s where the box works best. For normal Road use the PDK is a bit old school compared to the more modern iterations but I just pop it into sport or sport plus and then it’s fine. Funnily enough I’ve always fancied a “clowns shoe” but no plans to get rid of the R, mines a keeper.
Assuming you have been tracking the Z3M then you will find the Porsche has a considerably more sophisticated chassis.
The R is probably a bit cheaper to run than a 996GT3, especially on track. 996 GT3 probably a fair bit quicker and more interesting though.

I know there’s the obvious 30hp difference. But stock vs stock, would a 996 GT3 be THAT much better on track?
Genuine question.
better only though adjustment as you can get a track geo on one without parts of course.Genuine question.
A R need's mods and brakes to track as well I guess.
you car vs a 996 he will beholding you up into the bends :-) but he will get the traction out the bends but you will have out braked him any way and be holding a higher apex speed, it's if they then get you back down the straight with more BHP and that will be vary on which tracks.
Cadwell you will lap faster than 996 GT3 imo, donny about the same, silverstone may be the GT3 will be faster there.
depends on driver as always and track.
I did not gel with mine for road use, I still own the Spyder of course.

Also how bulletproof is the Mezger engine with miles on it compared to a gen 2 Cayman engine (serious question as I've no idea).Genuine question.
I also looked at 996 GT3 but ultimately decided I didn't have deep enough pockets to 'really' enjoy a car like that, i.e. drive it with total abandon.
Hi.
I owned both a 996 GT3 Mk 1 & 2 and changed to a CR the 996 GT3 is all about the engine and what an engine it is for road they can be challenging and hard work you have to let it do it's own thing on bumpy roads learning not to fight the steering to much.
The acceleration is pretty violent but brings a smile, more suited to track I think as uk roads are pretty bad. Plus both I bought had both had a refresh both coming to over 10 k suspension brakes clutch rads ect you get the idea.
CR I find is a better fun drivers road car much better handerling a real drivers car that you can use all the power mini GT3 if you like my only gripe standard brakes could be better, find a good one with your desired spec I don't think much else in the Porsche range price bracket can beat it.
I have had mine over 6 years luv it longest I have ever owned a Porsche.
Only my option of course.
Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the insight, good to hear R's being used as intended! They seem pretty bombproof which is also a big appeal!Funnily enough I’ve always fancied a “clowns shoe” but no plans to get rid of the R, mines a keeper.

Apart from a standard130i and a couple of Fiesa St's I have also taken on track, I have little to reference the Z3M with - With the usual suspension mods it handled nicely enough to give me confidence! It will be great to see how a more sophisticated package feels ( hopefully just as fun!).
Why are so many of the cars that come on the market located around the home counties ( ok probably a daft question ) ?

Thank you. Out of curiosity if you were to have either the mk1 or mk2 996 back, which would it be?I owned both a 996 GT3 Mk 1 & 2 and changed to a CR the 996 GT3 is all about the engine and what an engine it is for road they can be challenging and hard work you have to let it do it's own thing on bumpy roads learning not to fight the steering to much.

Agree with sentiments of the 996 GT3 I owned a 996.2 for a short spell about 10 years ago. Engine was fantastic, the rest though i.e. chassis and handling I never fully gelled with but truth is I didn't take the time to learn it either and work out how to fully exploit the weight distribution, I do miss the rawness of it.
I was at Silverstone GP earlier this year and there was a well set up and very well driven red 996.2 GT3 (I think owned by someone on PH) It was easily as quick as the few GT4's there that day and keeping up with some of the more modern RS cars, I dont think even a well driven R would have got near it.

Wooden steering wheels and side louvres.... How do you think of this stuff??
But seriously, has anyone ever considered covering their R in Creosote? I was thinking it might add a degree of rust proofing, especially on the brake discs. Would also be a good theft deterrent as you could park up by a fence and no one would know you were there!
