Thursday I took her on her first proper road trip, doing a lap of Wales in a day! Unfortunately the weather wasn't quite what I had hoped for, being very Welsh the whole day which meant we didn't get to try out my friend's new FPV drone. Despite the rain though, the car was absolutely superb and took the weather and twisty roads in its stride.

We set off at 5am from Addlestone a and headed for the Elan Valley dams, which were absolutely stunning. From there we headed over to the North West coast to Barmouth for a bite to eat before heading into Snowdonia to find the B4391. The section from the A4212 that runs around the reservoirs is in my opinion the first bit of road in N Wales!





From there we headed to Bala for quick stop before heading home via Caffeine & Machine for a burger and a pit stop.



All in, 12hrs 25mins driving time and 567 miles! Can't wait to the next one!

I also got chance to put it on the scales.


Vehicle spec:
Carbon buckets
Spyder wheels
Air con
PDK
Basic audio
64litre tank (very nearly full)
Giro big discs
1litre bottle of oil
About 2kg of tools
Half a packet of wrigley chewing gum

I was hoping to see it in the 1300s and just scraped in biggrin
Really worthwhile job clearing out the rads, I do mine annually and always impressed at how much rubbish they collect in there. I would also highly recommend popping the bumper off. As there will be probably that much junk again lodges below the rads under the duct and if you have AC, finds its way between the vehicle cooling rad and the AC condenser.

Wasn’t the R listed at 1295kg? Just shows how much a few options adds back in.

Mine was 1378Kg at CenterGravity the other day. That was with full tank and Heigo half cage. Yours must be PDK??

Interesting about the weight at CG of your R, below is the weight of my Gen 2 S after fitting my Ohlins R+T at CG in 2017, car has sports seats which aren't exactly light, think it had about half a tank of fuel too. Came in at 1389kg

Thanks @frayz ... trying to catch you up on the miles front! You'll have to join for the next one, although I'm not sure how you would've got on with Cup 2s in that weather!!

Deffo keep me posted if you line up a solid day out like that mate. Cup2s are fine in the wet, you just drive accordingly. Although they hate very cold temps and greasy surfaces.

I daily my Clio on R888Rs so just guess I’m used to driving on all the grip or none of the grip. rofl

A few of the guys I met at the Anniversary were up for a Sat morning meet-up one weekend, so if you fancy coming Surrey way for a run down to Goodwood then I'll let you know. Either that or get another Wales trip in thumbup

Need some help! So last Sunday at the 10 year event I found out my aircon had lost gas again! It’s seems to lose the gas every 6 to 9 months and Porsche say it’s meets the pressure test, cannot see the dye leaking and seems fine but would need to be in for days to investigate!

I’ve never really messed around with aircon so limited experience, worth just replacing the rads? Anyone got any tips or pics of how easy/hard this is to do?

No difficult to do but you’ll want to replace the driers as well as the condensers if you do so.
Not sure where you’re based mate but I can recommend an excellent AC specialist. Intocool in Burnham on Crouch. This chap is excellent and won’t sell you something you don’t need.

I had the R out on Saturday for a hillwalking trip. A cracking run out and managed to dodge most of the rain showers.





My friends dog wasn't wanting to stay still to pose with the car so this is the best I got.



Then I decided a good shot could be had parking near the river. Unfortunately when I put the handbrake on to take the pic, I think something broke. Not quite sure what's going on, but some unpleasant noises make me suspect one of the springs for the handbrake has failed. Plan is to get some new caliper bolts then get the wheel and disc off and see what's going on... and hope the drive home hasn't made anything too much worse. Anyone else ever had issues with the handbrake on theirs?

I've had the handbrake pad material delaminate from the metal shoe which caused quite a racket.

Interesting, could be that. Whenever I wash the car, I tend to run it round the block to dry the discs and then put it in the garage with the handbrake off. Recently, for reasons unknown, I put the handbrake on when I parked it. When I next drove it, it took a bit of a jerk of the clutch to get the handbrake to release and then it was noisy for a bit. It was fine after that, but maybe something got damaged in the process and using the handbrake the other day finished it off. I might get a spring kit and a shoe kit and just replace both, although I haven't found a spring kit without shoes yet and the kits with both have shoes that are a lot more money than you need to pay for them.

The top is Arcteryx finest - it's for people who don't realise that North Face stuff is just as good and is a lot cheaper. Apparently.

I didn't buy it for the colour and never wear it driving the car as it looks a bit much, but it is a slightly similar shade. And green is my favourite colour smile

Can anyone help me diagnose what's been making the awful noise from my brakes? biglaugh





The long spring which should be at the bottom of the brake shoes can be seen in the 2nd pic where I found it, very much not where it is supposed to be. The top image shows what shape it is.

New brake shoes ordered - £20 for aftermarket ones from a decent brand vs £140ish for Porsche ones. New springs will be bought from Porsche. I'll buy new caliper bolts too. On that front, do people change them each use as Porsche recommend? Or are people reusing them? They didn't feel very highly (all things are relative and they certainly weren't about to fall out) torqued.

What did surprise me was the condition of the brake disc - the car had a major service in November and has done only a few hundred miles since. At the service time, no mention was made of the brakes, however I found the inside of the disc was starting to pit around the vent holes and wasn't in great shape at all. Given how much Porsche enjoy emptying wallets, I'm slightly perplexed why they didn't flag this. Anyway while the old disc would have been fine for a while, I think it makes sense to replace them so two new discs have been ordered. Pads have a fair bit of meat left on them so I'm tempted to leave those (they have been replaced before, discs are original), although I can also see logic in replacing them too while I'm at it.

^^^ Have you got the Service Manual?

I find between that and the tips available online it can make things go alot more smoothly....mind you I haven't tackled the parking brakes myself yet !!
