718 Cayman Spec & Colours- what have you gone for?
Discussion
Does anyone here use Apple Carplay? It works fine, but still feels a bit rushed in some ways. For example when I press the siri button on the stalk, I get a message saying no carplay device is connected, yet siri is activated and works normally. Not a big deal but still weird. Does anyone else get this? Also the maps doesn't follow you like your regular navigator, instead I suppose it tries to guess where you are going and gives you directions to places you regularly visit. Can this feature be turned off? And you can't even type in anything.
How are PCM updates? Do I have to take my car to a dealer or can I download a new firmware and install it from a memory card?

I use car play. I don't get the message about it not being connected when I use Siri. If I have maps on but no guidance it does follow me like regular navs. It's an Apple thing rather than Carplay that tracks your most frequent journeys and times you take them. It thinks it's being helpful by predicting where you are about to go based on your travel history and sets the destination accordingly. Not sure if you can switch it off. How are PCM updates? Do I have to take my car to a dealer or can I download a new firmware and install it from a memory card?
Finally placed my order today, spent a couple of hours in the showroom going through specs and walking back and forward to the 718s dotted around seeing what options looked like. The salesman was great too, telling me the options which he felt were a waste.
Order in now, expected Jan/Feb 2018:
Cayman S
Manual transmission
Rhodium Silver metallic
Graphite Blue leather interior
Sports seats Plus
Bi-Xenon headlights inc. PDLS
PASM
Sport Chrono
20" Carrera S wheels in satin platinum
Cruise control
Heated multifunction wheel
Heated seats
Passenger footwell net
Smoking package
I wanted a light exterior/dark interior combo and the blue leather hopefully will work well. I'm still undecided if I want Sport Chrono but it's in for now and I can use it to fund other things if need be.
Spent an inordinate amount of time playing with the wheel and suspension combo, the salesman explained the best option was to go 19" with Sport PASM or 20" with standard PASM and I went for the latter.
I might change the model designation to black lettering as I might look good on the silver body, but apart from that there's not much else I think I want. No doubt that will change.

I personally couldn't rationalise Sport Chrono at ~1500 when I went through the process (and I wasn't shy when it came to options). Played with it a lot at the PEC to try and convince myself it was a sensible option. To me it's just functionality I cannot see getting enough use to represent value at that price (unless the car is tracked regularly in which case Sport Plus might be of some use?). I suppose it could be suggested it makes the interior look a little bit more swish with the clock on the dash and dial on the steering wheel...but its a lot of cash for that. Your salesman will be thinking about the owner after you when it comes to trade in time recommending that one - seems to be a popular must-have (and I'm sure I'm in the minority in not selecting it!).
Bet you can't wait now! Time drags from this point on...still waiting for mine and each day seems to go slower than the last...
That is indeed a good spec. Rhodium silver, platinum wheels, graphite blue interior, great combinations there.
Sport chrono, I specced it, and it's the one thing if I bought again I would probably remove.
- Steering-wheel dial - I only use Normal mode on the motorways and Sport mode when driving on all other roads so don't need the dial on the steering wheel for that, the button on the centre console would suffice.
- Auto-blip is ok, but I can easily live without.
- Dynamic engine mounts I couldn't tell you they were there. Might make a difference of milliseconds in track times, but I don't track the car so ...
- Clock on the dash. Nice, I like it.
In summary, if it were a £500 option I would go for it. 3 times that price I wouldn't again.
