World pretty much fell apart, from a driving perspective. Had a stroke a couple of months ago and lost some percentage of my field of vision (medically known as Quadranatopia) to the right periphery. Was told to stop driving. Had a field of vision test for the DVLA last friday and yesterday received notification that my licence is to be revoked until I can show that the eyesight has improved to DVLA required standards. This could take months, years or never happen. It's a bit of a blow I can tell you and I sincerely hope that this never happens to anyone here.

I have a beautiful, fully loaded 987.2 sitting outside and my question to you lot is, do I just sell now or should I wait until the spring? It's really too good to let go cheaply and it costs very little to keep. Doesn't need service until 2018 so there is even the question of whether I should sell at all. The problem is that it's there, every day and every evening, looking gorgeous and begging to be driven. My brother in law is currently enjoying the porsche experience! Have any of you had this affliction? If so, is there light at the end of the tunnel? Annual Eurohoon is obviously a goner!

Any views chaps?

Very sorry to hear this.... is that in both eyes? I've spent a fair few hours in hospital due to an eye injury many years ago, so I have a slight inkling of your fears.

Re the boxster - they are not an uncommon car, easy to find another - therefore IMO sell in the spring.

Good luck.

Yes, both eyes. Apologies Orange, I wasn't clear. It's actually a Cayman S 987.2 and they are, I am lead to believe, like hen's teeth, or so I would assume from various comment seen on this forum.

Ahh no idea on values of modern cars - sorry.

Sell it anyway, and buy something older that will appreciate? If Trumpocalypse and Putinurgatory arrive, we're all doomed anyway hehe

I have the beginnings of glaucoma in my right eye and have a very slight loss of peripheral vision in that eye but luckily atm it's not apparent when looking through both, so ok for now. However, in the future I may face have to face your situation. :-(
I currently have a well specced 981 Cayman S which I hope will see me through for a while yet. If you have to sell, next spring would be the time. In the mean time hope you gain some vision back.

Hi Johnnie

Sorry to hear that. I organise a few road trips each year and there will be 4-5 next year. We have anything from 3 to 12 cars on each. Cars include Ferrari, Porsche, AMG, M cars, hot hatches, Audi and all sorts of other stuff. We do them from May (Mille Miglia) throughout the year till the end of September.

You'll be welcome to a passenger seat in one of the cars on one of the trips if you want that Eurohoon experience, albeit in the passenger seat. PM me your email address if you want me to include you in the emailers that go round the lads. We're roughly between 30 and 55 years old, all sorts of backgrounds, just a bunch of blokes that enjoy cars, and a few beers.

Quite a few Yorkshiremen so I apologise for that in advance. I've taught them to use a knife and fork now but inside toilets continue to confuse the fk out of them.

Cheers

Rich

You'll certainly take no harm waiting until spring.
In the mean time your sight may improve!
Keep the car, I know it's easy for me to say,but it'll give you something to aim for.
987.2 is indeed a sought after car. You could devote a whole thread to it's merits over a 981!
Genuinely best of luck.

Agree with the above.

Having the aim of driving your car again will help you find the mental fortitude to recover, which we all hope you will.

Good luck!

You are most kind Rich. I have my usual Eurohoon colleagues all offering a passenger seat so no shortage of kind offers to get out there. I may yet take an offer up and despite the Yorkshire issue ( wink )yours sound very tempting. We also have a full and varied team which, this year, will include an Ultima, AMG x 2, Tuscan x 3 and a V12 Vantage AM; quite a stable there and all would be amazing rides. I am still at the 'can't abide being a passenger' stage. I have always preferred being behind the steering wheel but that may change when someone waves the offer of an Ultima ride for a week. If I get bored with that perhaps I could jump into the AM monster? It's beginning to sound quite good ain't it!

ALl the best with the hoonage and thanks again. Amazing bunch here....

Sorry to hear you news. If you love the car keep it; it will be that much more satisfying when you get back in it.

My dad has suffered from a sudden nervous sytem related disease this year which has been incredibly debilitating. To kick him whilst he is down, the steriods he takes have caused some major side effects - one of which is is glaucoma.

A couple of months ago he noticed his night vision wasn't great, and then his periphal vision started to deteriorate in one eye. He booked an appointment at the optician and (after rearranging because of meetings), was eventually tested and referred due to high pressure in his eye.

He saw the specialist and was told at the rate of decline he would go blind in two weeks without immediate action. The damage done to the optic nerve is also irreversible.

Fortunately, his vision is now stable, but he has to taken the test you have mentioned to see if he is OK to drive. It's been hard knowing how much he loves driving. It was bad enough finding out he'll likely never race again due to his pre-existing issues.

So please, a reminder to all:

- Find out if you have glaucoma in the family
- If you use any steriod, even a cream for spots or eczema, it increases pressure in your eyes
- Laser eye surgery increases pressure in your eye
- You can stil have good vision and a damaged optic nerve
- Even if you have good eyesight, opticians check for eye health and cancer
- Men in particular - listen to your friggin' body; if someone feels different, get to the doctors!

We were told by the eye specialist at the hospital that every week he has to break it to someone that they are going to go blind, because they left it to late. Because they were either too busy, thought it might fix itself, or were - ironically - too worried to get it checked out.

So if it helps bud, you certianly have my sympathy and empathy. Try to keep focused on what you CAN do and make the most of it! I'm sure the experience has helped you re-evaulate what's important in life and how fragile it is beer

Who is investigating your vision? Have you had a 2nd opinion? Are you under the VERY BEST specialist in that field available to you?

I wouldn't contemplate selling the car until I was totally informed about the chances of recovering vision to an acceptable standard.

Thanks all. I hope your Dad gets full recovery Honda! Poor fella. You are so right, just listen to your body and if someothing ain't right then get it checked. Glaucoma seems rather prevalent and if there is loss of vision then it seems right to tell the DVLA and see what happens. My view of the world is changed but my brain tells me a different story. I fully believe I can see everything (until that time when I was sitting in the passenger seat of my wifes Renault Migrane and only saw the white transit van when it was in front of me). I would have missed that van! Our brains adjust but the fact is that there is still a defect.

Take care and thanks for the kind wishes.

Cannot advise on the car,but as a fellow petrolhead and a man who is getting older, and having seen one of my Hgv drivers suffer the same, I just wanted to share my sincere thoughts with you, hope that maybe you can find some remedy somehow. Mike

Hi,

I would have a good look at the letter and the on line guide to medical standards "Assessing Fitness to Drive". If it is a stable quadrantanopia you may be able to re-apply after a year has elapsed. Look at 'exceptional cases for stable visual field loss'. It does not require a return to a normal visual field but there are some hoops to jump through. Wouldn't sell it yet!

Very sorry to hear your bad news!

I would keep the Cayman, at least until the spring/summer. Hopefully then your vision may improve and you can enjoy it again. It might even give you something to hold onto hope for and improve your regeneration smile

All the best chap
