Why didn't you go Miami Blue out of curiosity... worried it would draw too much attention to you or, resale worries?
Went with GT silver and yes like to be anonymous ! But miami looked good ! Not sure how it will age tho!
Understandable if you want to go incognito, under the radar. Before my 981 I had a Solar Orange TTS, people used to say I'd struggle moving it on... traded it in at the specialist I got the Cayman from. Sold in 2 weeks. I'd have had racing yellow if I could've found one. I think the more lively and vibrant colours in the Porsche range are not going to suit all... come resale time there will always be those not wanting black, white, shades of grey etc. Miami Blue, Lava Orange, Yellow.... just the ticket.
My wife's incoming Boxster is going to be Ruby Star...not for the shy and retiring!

I never heard him mention the CGTS - just the CS. I may need to re-watch that!

I chuckled when he introduced it as a "£50k car", but was starting to get mildly annoyed by the time they mentioned £50k for the 20th time...I would have much preferred a little nod to the fact that the base may be £50k, but by the time you add anything at all you are well north of £60k, the same way that CMH do.

I get your point - but given that Sat Nav, better sound system, mobile phone and DAB are now standard you could get a car quite a lot closer to the base price than previously without feeling poverty stricken. Even flappy paddles are standard with PDK.

True enough, but bog-basic is £51,853. Adding PDK alone is then £53,853. Choose a paint colour you like...£54,434 (Miami Blue as in the show - £55,511)...even JUST PDK and wheels and colour as per the show, you are looking at £57,140. Add a couple of choice options (which most would if you were buying an expensive item like a Porsche - even just to get what they expect from a premium product) and you blow through £60k very, very easily.

Of course, that's just me - if I were to spec a 718S to my tastes, I'm at £65k without breaking a sweat. I doubt there is anyone at all who says, "No options for me, thanks - I'll skip straight to the Summary page of the configurator and be done".

You make a fair point that the car tested costs a lot more - but road test cars (or demonstrators for that matter) are usually high spec cars. If I was working to a budget (as it happens I'm not - but I've not always been in that happy position), I'd probably only specify Sapphire Blue, Climate and Parking Sensors (about £1000) - and not feel too impoverished.

There's really no need to splash a load of cash in the options list. These cars are fine straight out of the box, and great value for money. Only add extras you think you'll find useful, because if you're trying to impress your mates you'll find that much easier with a base 911 at £78k

IMO a base 718 with PDK is the pick of the bunch for value. I'd be on the road in one for less than £50k even with a few select options.

By the time you get to £65k I'd be looking at a 460 bhp Corvette Stingray with thundering V8 engine - not a 718. Top Gear's fastest lap board shows the Corvette to be a whole lot quicker than any 718S, and it's very easy to live with.

The car on test was a manual not a PDK which saves a fair bit

I bought a 718 S for about £54k (delivered last November) which included sat nav, bose, 20" wheels and a few other bits. It all depends on where your priorities lay as to how much you spend. I had no intention of doing track days etc so PTV, adaptive damping etc was not something I wanted to spend my money on

As to the Top Gear review then each to their own - if you want a new car they said it was the best option. For a secondhand £50k car there are numerous options depending on how old you want to go.

The sound isn't as smooth/nice as the Flat 6 but it has character and is definitely different to other 4 cyl turbos (my other car is a Golf R which sounds completely different).

Overall for me the numerous small improvements mentioned outweigh the noise but I can appreciate others will take a different view

It just summed up my own opinion of the 718 boxster S I test drove.

Faster, sharper handling, better steering than the 981S but the sound of the engine was so ste, I just bought a 981S instead.
I agree - summed up my experience of the 718 as well. Great car with a disappointing engine. Still the best in the class as Chris concluded.

The 981 Spyder has the nicer 911 Turbo steering / quicker rack and a flat 6 which is one way of getting the advancements that the 718 has.

Just googled that as it's not a colour I was aware of.. WOW, fair play to her! I'm coming round to Crayon as a colour with matching interior.. not sure if that makes me boring or not smile

All I know is that I went through a tunnel last Friday with my windows down and the noise was epic. If I'd not had Mrs.Me in the passenger seat, I may very well have turned around and gone back through...and then back through again to continue on my way! (Each time costing £1.70).

For those few minutes I didn't go over 30mph and could not have cared who was looking/judging/anything (although my wife did say afterwards that the 3 Transit vans I was sharing the tunnel with, all dropped their windows in sync) - it was absolute aural perfection and gave me the biggest smile I'd had in days.

The 718 may be faster, it may be 10% better in the corners, it may do 2mpg more...I don't care. I know for a stone cold fact, that it will never give me the same childish buzz that I got in that tunnel - not with that engine in it.

Now, the 718GT4 on the other hand.... wink

Heh, funny you should post that.

I went through a tunnel for the first time in the 718 CS on Sunday - the new A3 tunnel at Hindhead - on my way to one of the UK's great driving roads; the A283 from Godalming through Petworth in the South Downs. My best day out so far in the new Porker.

Tunnel was an experience with windows down, revs up, Sport and PSE on. Absolutely love the sound of this F4T.

I guess we're all different eh. smile

Exactly! And as it should be.

I need someone in my area with a 718CS to come out and play one weekend - see what things are actually like side-by-side in the real world where we done all have the skills of a part-time race driver.

Seriously - does it matter?

If you don't want a 718 for £50k - what are you going to buy instead????

Not many of us smile I specced only CDR+, Sports Wheel, Bluetooth and Parking Sensors on my 981. The parking sensors are a bit st IMHO so if I were in the market for a 718 I would probably go no options or just PTV.

Well (along with a couple of thousand others) I've put my deposit down on an Alpine. Of course it may turn out to be a big disappointment and I won't go through with the order if it is. But the ethos of the car is (for me) spot on. I'm not anti turbo 4s per se - but it will have to be more to my taste than the 718 is. Other aspects of the car - weight in particular and the fact that they have not gone for ultimate grip weigh in its favour fo me.

I live 4 miles from the Hindhead tunnel, so if any of you fancy a little meet up, let me know smile My BGTS is gone but can bring my 997 GTS or 993 to the party smile
