Just wondering what people's thoughts would be between these two cars, assuming that the GTS arrives at the end of the year as effectively a trim package (sport chrono, interior pack, sports exhaust etc., plus a handful of horsepower).

A specced up CGTS will likely come in around £70k, and a decent spec base 911 (to my tastes) around £95k - or in other words around £300pcm on the deposit that I want to put down. (These assumptions are broadly irrelevant to my question).

So just to compare for now to a 718 CS (since they actually exist and will be very similar to the GTS), will the 911 feel more special, or more refined on long journeys etc.? Is it worth the extra money? What would make you go for one over the other? The base 911's 0-60 and MPG specs are identical to the 718S - but will the Cayman (by being smaller etc) feel more rapid and urgent than the 911, which is more 'GT-style'?

As some superfluous side detail, I've taken out a 2 year lease (finishing start of 2019) on another car to wait for the 718 GTSs, as my OPC was so sure that you couldn't get your hands on one before the end of next year, but it's looking like they'll be announced towards the end of 2017, with availability at the start of 2018. If I don't get my hands on one until end 2018 / start 2019, the GTS will be replaced soon after me buying one, which I have to say I'd find a little difficult to stomach. Meanwhile, the new 911s will be out at that time / shortly after, and I'm guessing will be broadly the same as the existing model (plus a few bits and a few grand).

Would welcome thoughts on the comparison...

Personally, if I was you and could afford it, I'd be looking at a 911 as I wouldn't buy the 4-pot Cayman.

Like you, I am waiting for a 718 GTS (Boxster for me though) and I believe it to be launching at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. When my current car was in for service a few weeks ago I had 991.2 Carrera S for the day. A lovely car naturally and fast of course but having driven a nuber of 718's Base, S , Cayman, Boxster, PSE, non PSE. I don't think I coud bring myself to spend a significant amount of extra money to get a 911 . I have owned 911' s in the past so the " itch has been scratched" which might not be the same for you The 718 GTS I think will be as much car as I want and can use on public roads

I'm sure the 718 GTS will be a good car but I couldn't look past a new 991.2 911 for the money. They're lovely looking cars and much nicer than the 718.

I would go 911 - just seems the more special car to me (I would compare a 718 more to the offerings from BMW, Audi, Lotus etc)
Also more useable thanks to rear seats

Thanks all - interesting responses. Sometimes with the styling I like the 'aggression' of a halo model vs the comparatively less aggressive styling of an entry model - but with big wheels etc. I think the base 911 can look nice.

Does anyone know anything about the refinement at motorway speeds of the 718 vs the 911 (on 20 inch wheels)?

Also, think the space arrangements will be approximately similar, as the Cayman has a decent sized rear boot...

My CGTS has 20" wheels and PASM. The ride is sublime in the 'Normal' chassis setting, far far better than you might expect!

And what about wind noise / tyre roar at 70/80mph?

Difficult for me to tell as the OPC is East London has a pre-defined test route where you struggle to pass 40mph. My Audi S1 had a deafening drone at motorway speeds and was exhausting to drive long distance, but in my my Golf GTI you can whisper to a passenger and be heard!

I know it's not the reason for buying a car like this, but it would be my only car and so is an important factor for me.

95k for a Base Carrera?! thats a lot of options!

We just ordered one and it was over 10k cheaper than that before discount (all be it a manual).

Not massively - here's the code: PJB3RHX1

To me it's just the things that make it look nice (paint, wheels, interior) plus the tech bits that are standard on a basic Golf (cruise control, parking sensors etc.).

Amazing how it adds up.

(Also - when you say discount - I didn't know such a thing was available...?)

Lovely.

Like Carmine, but 1800 for a non metallic red is just a piss take so we stuck with guards! Same for wheels - one inch bigger for over a grand!

As you say it adds up - our first cayenne we kept the spec light and sold that car after 2.5 years for 85% of what we paid. Our current Cayenne spec'd to the gunnels hasnt done so well (not a surprise). We decided we would not make that mistake again.

Nice that (as it bloody should) bum warmers, bluetooth, PASM, DAB and Nav are all standard now.

here is out modest spec, http://www.porsche-code.com/PJ4X2V30

I somehow managed £3,950 off. Arrives late June/early July.

Not an issue. There's more noise from the flat six just behind my ears biggrin

At about £70k for a new 718s/Gts I think I would buy a 3 year old 991.1s !
At the cost of a new 991.2 (£95k) a lightly used or even delivery milesGt4 is an even better purchase!

Agreed - but a nicely optioned base carrera (still hardly slow) can be had for around 80, and they hold their value very well (still worth almost 80k for a 1 year old base car)

Well not for me - a GT4 isn't really usable as a sole car. Every now and then I need to chuck suitcases in and get to the airport, or drive across country. This is doable (just) in a Cayman or a 911, but not in a GT4.

I am also not interested in used as the interest rates on finance often make it more expensive than new (unless you go several years old), and tech (e.g. carplay, bluetooth, decent infotainment etc.) is important to me and, in my opinion, used to be pretty shocking on Porsches.

The GT4 has no less room or space than a regular Cayman - two boots, one front and rear, and no rear seats.
