Been searching around 981 Cayman S's and the whole OPC network only has 2 manuals? That can't be right can it? That makes them more rare than a GTS Manual, which I have come to the conclusion I can't afford.... I think, boo!

Supply ebbs and flows, keep watching.

There were 200+ manual Ss registered so roughly twice as many as manual GTSs.

Factors include:

  • 981 Boxster was available by summer 2012 but Cayman didn't arrive until nearly a year later.
  • Cayman 981 was only on sale for 3 years
  • A significant proportion of 981s were bought with the base engine. Many buyers bought a loaded 2.7 for their £50k rather than a base 3.4
  • The great majority of Porsche sportscars sold in recent years have been PDK.
So, in summary, a manual 981 is a relatively rare creature - especially if it's a Cayman. I think demand will remain high in the used market for a long time.

Stunning cars.

Yeah, you're right, I had a 987 and would love a 981, but its manuals all the way for me, but then I guess when I looked for my first Cayman, PDK or the equvialent was no where near what is today, so maybe i'm discounting PDK too quickly, but I know deep down, I want manual. Alas this is the first time I have spent looking at 981's and you're right, the market has an abudance of 2.7's, but there is no way I could from a 987 S to a non S.

Definitely rare, I started searching at the end of last year and found a Manual with most of the items I wanted in April;

3.4S
Manual
PTV
PASM (Wanted X73, but too rare)
PSE
Sports Chrono

I did find some models without the PSE and PTV but on 3 occasions they had sold within a week of enquiring, one on the same day it listed an hour after I spoke to the OPC!

Have you considered the 981 Boxster S? I went from a 987.2 CS to a 981 BS (both manual) and haven't looked back.

They are still pretty rare, but widening your scope will help. It took me 4 frustrating months to find the right car, and you have to be prepared to move quickly if one does pop up..

I too have been looking at 981CS. On Autotrader a few weeks ago, of the 30 cars for sale, I think three were manual.

Most of the manual cars I've seen appear to have a very, very basic spec; people must have been keen to keep the list price down!

I went to see a 2013 UK launch 981CS back in 2015. As far as I could see it had every top-end option you could choose.
13k miles and £40,000, around the same as I subsequently paid for my 2014 2.7.
Of course it was a PDK so as to make it more saleable no doubt.
But then again... in was brown.
The colour finally put me off it, but then so did the ease at which it broke the speed limit with barely a sensation of speed?

Has the OP thought about a 2.7 manual CS? In my case, having tried both engines, at similar price points, I chose the smaller more exciting one, in PDK. 2.7 CS manual may be easier to find perhaps, as those wanting a cheap car would spec manual.

Why not go from 987S to base 981? The performance is equivalent. The 2.7 has better fuel economy as a bonus.
Try one.

Hold out for the manual - it's a great 'box despite all the opinions you read about the long gearing. Surprised more people didn't opt for it but then again the PDK is also impressive (for different reasons). I owned a 2015 981 CS from new with most of the tasty mechanical options. Be open minded about spec, if I was spec'ing again I would probably live without PSE, PTV and possibly the Sports Chrono pack.

In the current market a high spec CS which is very close to GTS spec can be had for over £10k less, that's a huge premium to pay for +15PS, +10lbft, some smoked rear lights, minor differences to front and rear bumpers and a touch of alcantara. All IMHO.

Why not try a PDK car before discounting it, although you miss the connection if you use the full rev range then the opportunity to change gear is less than the Pdk because of the long gearing.

Some good comments, this is the end of the manuals though isn't it, you kind of get the feeling there will be plenty of time moving forward for the PDK option, but noted, i'll go and give it a go!

Every car I am looking at though as the next option is a manual!

GTS is easier to find with PASM or X73, Manual, PSE, Chrono, (PTV still rare). I was helping my friend look for a CS with this spec and it was impossible, eventually we did find one though. I went for the GTS because I wanted this spec, and like the front bumper and the GTS interior pack with carbon trim really made it for me.

Both great cars.

Mine will be for sale next year if you can hold on that long (moving country):

White 981 CS, currently on 11k miles (do around 100 a month if that)
Manual
Sports chrono
PASM
PTV
PSE
PCCB
Buckets
Plus other options (climate, full leather, etc)

Agree, they seem too be few and far between at the moment. But what a cracking car for the price!

That is highly specced...... This isn't happening in the next 54 minutes and the 981 CS is in amongst a few other options. Would I get flamed for an Ultra Violet wrap on such a thing?

They are worth all the money being asked, just try one and buy one now or save up and buy one.
