To buy a Porsche that would be equally comfortable driving to the Ring and Spa for track days or to Wales/Scotland for fun on the roads.
He is an experienced track driver so something soft won’t suit.

I have recommended a manual GT3 997.2 rather than an RS for financial reasons as well as comfort.

Price has not been decided on yet, so let’s say up to 150K.

What do the members here advise based on the criteria?

A regular GT3 falls comfortably within his budget, but if it were me, I'd look to get an RS if he can stretch that far. They are a better track weapon and still comfortable enough for longer journeys. Alternatively a 991 GT3. Nice problem to have..good luck.

Really? For track use? I think the GT3 is a good call. Even they're becoming too pricey to track tbh. Maybe a high miles 997.1 GT3? You do see them occasionally for sale at around £50k.

I know what you mean, you will get financially punished for using it, but OP makes no mention of investment potential so I'm assuming he's willing to actually use the thing as intended rather than keep it in the garage.

Honestly, I’ve known my friend for 35 years and without being disparaging about the superb vehicle the GT4 is, it won’t be fast enough for him.

Yes this bloke uses his cars and has minimum interest in investment potential. Like all of us he’d prefer not to lose a hefty percentage but that is not the primary criteria of the purchase.

It will lap the same if not faster than a stock 997 GT3 ;-) lol

If its not for investment and purely for driving I would tell him to go for the 997.1 GT3.

Its a car that is equally at home on a drive to the south of France or 10 laps of the Nurburgring.

The 997.2 GT3 and RS models do the same job (and arguably are slightly better in both scenarios) but they cost a great deal more.

For sure, but it won’t provide the same thrills on the Autobahn on the way there and back.

I know that seems like a luddites view but it’s how a lot of us feel about the GT4 as a continent travelling road/track car rather than a B road/track car.

I still don't get it ?

what thrills with a 997 GT3 on the Autobahn will you not get in a GT4 ?

1st you say " won’t be fast enough for him."

now you say "no thrills on the autobahn"

maybe he needs a 991 turbo S with cup 2's on it ? because any 997 GT3 and GT4 is just about the same thing, lap and speed wise.

If he has the money get a 997.2 RS, or if he wants to just be the fastest get a 991 GT3 PDK thing.

Better still let him choose as this thread is now stupid :-).

The only stupid factor on this thread is you.

I’ve had no direct contact with you but I watch you creeping around the forum trolling wherever possible.

Thank you to the sensible people on this thread we’ve got some great opinions.

As usual, you seem to think your opinion is the only one worthwhile listening to.

The GT4 is a great car.

It is not a continent crossing vehicle, period.

It will not cross continents as comfortably as a GT3
comfort.

I did not ask about GT4’s because they have already been ruled out, as has the 997/991 Turbo.

We are asking for opinions in the 997/991 GT3 and RS sphere with a budget of 100-150K

Thank you to everyone, please keep opinions coming.

It may boil down to gearbox preference. If they're fine with PDK I'd be looking to get into a 991.1 GT3. A 991.2 would require paying over list, and probably more that £150k, so probably out of budget. Otherwise, 997.2 for a manual.

For serious cross Europe mileage I'd be looking to get into as new a car as I could afford.

Having owned both, I do not believe that is correct, if you are referring to the pre-991 GT3s.

If your friend is a' racing standard' track driver, then I can understand the presumption that the GT4 may not have the ultimate performance, but it delivers enormous enjoyment elsewhere. Maybe investigate the upgrade options.

Otherwise, it's 991 GT3 IMO.

Would the car be his only car or a very special occasion car in a fleet?
Are pax and luggage a consideration?

No it wouldn’t be his only car but would be his only street legal/track car.

Luggage not a consideration.

To be fair to those suggesting GT4s, I too thought your original question was an open one and that you had just mentioned two GT3 variants to your friend as a starting point to open the discussion. From my own and friends' experiences the GT4 is a very accomplished country crosser and fun on the big tracks. Many years ago we used to all be in aircooled 911s for our annual trip to Spa. Nowadays we're almost all in GT4s and Cayman Rs. It's a lot less sweaty at the dinner table in the evenings now! biggrin
