This is an interesting read as a fairly new Boxster 981GTS owner and Porsche numpty..

On our way back from testing a new Exige S which was totally impractical and my wife not a fan of the entry/exit technique once in her evening out wear, we called into Porsche and a quick look at the new 781's was interrupted by a used (well 3 years and 5k miles) 981GTS.

Instantly I was aware the GTS was a very special looking car and I really liked all the GTS trim and spec' - confirmed even more with a drive and that wonderful engine sound.

I didn't even want to try the 4 pot and this from a never owned a Porsche before position, so a deal was struck and I/We love the GTS from that day.

To the point of depreciation, I considered a similar sum on a new S model (Boxster only as we wanted a drop top) would depreciate more and to honest 30 seconds later I was back on the thought of the last 6 pot Boxster being a keeper, so no thoughts to trade in in the coming few years anyhow,

Interestingly I later had 991 911 Carrera GTS Convertible for a few days from the dealer while mine was back there for some tidying and we preferred the 981 Boxster GTS from a general ride and sound point of view. It was a bit shouty for me to be fair although blisteringly quick.

The 981 GTS v 718 GTS debate will go on and like it or not that's what's happening to most cars nowadays with less cc's and a turbo or two.

I wouldn't move to a 911 cabriolet and wouldn't want to move away from the GTS spec so for me my car is a keeper seeing as there is nothing quite as rounded for me out there..

Once we've had a chance to actually drive the 718 GTS then we'll all know if there's something there to change for, but at the moment 330bhp is plenty and did I mention that exhaust note....

Very interesting views on here! Have I thrown in that I’m 6’4 tall aswel haha! I love the cgts that much I am willing to sacrifice comfort. I do fit if I place the chair in its lowest/furthest back position as I’m sure other taller cayman owners do haha. That aside I’ve found another car I like but it has multi function steering wheel and I hate the look. Anyone on here with a sport wheel want to do a swap. The car has 10k miles so that will give you an idea on the steering wheels condition.

Its very unlikely that current GTS owners would swap but that's not what Porsche are after. If you had tried the 4 pot then you would have found that it is a better car except in some ears sound, but that has all been done before power steering , water cooled etc etc.
Nice review below on the 2 models, it divides opinion but you feel some people just read reviews and never try themselves ,who wouldn't want a faster more exciting car which again is a matter of opinion.

For some, the "better" bits of the 718 outweigh the loss of the NASP engine.

For me, they don't as I really value the things Dan talks about from the six - the throttle response and inertia free crescendo of revs in particular. Nothing the 718 does can compensate me for that loss.

That would require the order book to be closed until then and Alpine produce at the rate of about 6000/year from March. I can't see either happening. Remember that they will be driving the car on the continent before then. Of course, Alpine could give priority to RHD customers - but I wouldn't bet on that. Personally I don't expect my PE much before the end of the year and I placed my deposit last March.

Interested to hear what you think when you get yours; pure edition looks nice although a touch pricey for me but hopeful I will get a test drive in May and can make a decision then; I'm fairly patient most of the time smile.

Just re-read your post and I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say!

As for the faster car being better and more desirable, I'd take a slower GT3 over a Turbo S any day of the week and twice on Sundays. It's all about feel and connection to the engine for me. I find cars like the 911 Turbo S or the Nissan GTR impressive but completely unappealing in equal measure.

I'm sure the guys and gals into air cooled cars would say something similar about their cars versus water cooled models...

Exactly. Buying a Cayster for drag races is ignoring the best part about them - the handling through the corners!

Exactly, the statement just shows a massive nievity over what Porsche is about imho.

If I want fast I get in the 488, if I want character I get in the 993, if I want comfort I get in the 740.... If I want to smile I get in the BGTS. I really wish the 718 could give me that but it just can't.

Ermmm let me think what Porsche is about now ????? 250,000 cars sold last year and nearly 200,000 Suv's and Panamera's OOps forgot to add Diesel as well confused

I'm not sure what sort of traffic lights Diffstar is used to, but the ones we have don't allow rolling starts . . .

New RS3 (400ps version) did a 3.5s 0-60 for Car and Driver, PDK 718 GTS should be around the same, though probably not any quicker. - if drag racing from traffic lights is your thing.

My dealer was told by Alpine that an order placed NOW would be fulfilled by the end of the year - but I don't find even that credible. Alpine say they will produce the 1955 PEs between March and September (I expect RHD cars to be the last) and start production on Pure and Legend after that . They already have over 2500 deposits for them and even if the production rate is up to 5000/yr by then , that will fill production until March 2019. I think that represents best case scenario and a bit more slippage wouldn't surprise me.

If you think odds are that you will like the car and will wait that long I'd place a deposit now, or as soon as they start taking deposits again if that isn't possible. It's fully refundable so your only exposure is currency fluctuation and a little loss of interest. You can pull the plug in May if the car doesn't suit. That was my view last March and, apart from production delays, I'm still very comfortable with the decision I made.

I was sold on the GTS trim and spec of this particular car. Had the 718GTS been in the showroom then I could have done a back to back, sadly back in September last year the 718GTS was a way off and I wasn’t going to wait or go the S route. Yes I know the S has 350bhp - it was the GTS I wanted.

I look forward to hopefully having a drive in the 718GTS in due course..
