“How can YOU afford THAT”??
Discussion
After chasing after a used Boxster for a few weeks, I’ve now bought a new 718 Cayman. I pick it up on March 1st.
I’m astonished at the response from colleagues and friends. Nobody has said anything complimentary; it’s all a variation on the same theme.
Like it’s anybody’s business...

That’s exactly how I’m feeling. It’s hard to change my colleagues, but I’m shocked at the reaction from some friends.
I have a pal in Dubai who has a stable of beautiful cars, and I’ve never felt anything but happiness for him. It would never in a million years occur to me to question anybody’s personal financial matters.
Some people just have no class.

I was quite nervous about talking about it when I first got my Cayman S last year... Still not mentioned it to anyone at work as it feels a bit embarrassing, and I didn't put anything on Facebook, etc. Naturally it slowly came out in conversation and I found most people at best seem quite disinterested, rather than overtly rude.
However the day after I got my GTS the neighbours were having some scaffolding put up. When I went out and got in the car one of the scaffolders shouted, "is that yours, or Daddy's?". So rude and patronising! I felt really awkward and just said "no, it's mine..." in a very unamused tone.

I’ve only told a couple of people at work so far, but after next Thursday it’ll be in the car park every day. I’m feeling apprehensive, and I should not have to.
First World problems and all that, but in this country, we do not like it when other people appear to be doing “better” than us.

the facebook thing is right though.
My life was going reasonably well and I was enjoying FB etc. I got several haters, some privately emailing me, other people that I thought were mates.
I just cut them off FB, and then stopped posting really.
Moved to Insta - and literally it's nearly all complete strangers.......(don't use my real name)
It's much more pleasant!

I have only had positive comments , I did have one guy ask how I afforded it but I just said I buy my clothes on ASOS and don’t piss money up the wall I don’t think he was being a prick.
Oh and the security guard when I went to a customer meeting asked me who I thought I was ragging a car around the car park. I was doing 5mph tops.
I haven’t put it on facebook because I kind of feel like some would think it’s showing off even those I have recently come to the conclusion that Facebook is full of narcissism anyway.
Other people’s views are irrelevant as said above disconnect them from your life and daily thoughts and you’ll be much better off.

Feel for you. As many have said on here. Easier said than done, but ignore them!
Love the colour you've chosen.
Another angle on this is that to the uninformed they see a Porsche (any Porsche) as something beyond their reach. And for some that maybe the case. However Porsche represent exceedingly good value for money. Particularly from the depreciation angle and servicing costs.
The ignorance of those who don't do their homwork and buy a brand new "popular" car don't understand that they too could have a very good used Porsche and run it for half the cost of what they have just bought.
You carry on and enjoy your wise investment.
