“How can YOU afford THAT”??

I ordered mine in December and have not told anyone, not even my wife. It is grey, the same as my current car so I am hoping she won’t notice. The two fewer seats might be hard to miss though.!
If she’s not in favour, just take her along to the PEC driving day, is what I did with mine. Complete reversal from her hating Porsches to loving them in the space of a morning! Edited by jimbo761 on Sunday 4th March 16:18

It’s insane to me that people can be so bitter/jealous about someone having a more expensive car than them that they can almost make you feel guilty about owning it! Sounds like you, unfortunately, worked with a bunch of insecure, resentful people. It’s quite pathetic, honestly! You could all be earning the exact same salary, but just spending it in completely different ways. Just because you have a nicer car doesn’t mean you’re necessarily earning more than them, so for them to become so aggravated about it is ridiculous.
I’m so glad I’m self-employed
Me too, but that can work two ways. I usually take my wife's VW Golf when I'm not sure about how well I will be received.. It is a "neutral" vehicle. I’m so glad I’m self-employed
At one site, I did overhear the director reviewing one contractor, who had just visited, saying that as he had a 7 series BMW (not new by any means but better than the director's) he want getting any more work!
Just barmy when I get those sorts of comments over my 100k mile 996!

Jesus Christ some of these stories are just nuts! I'm genuinely amazed people have an issue these days, PCP is the great leveller, and anyone can 'rent' pretty much anything they want..
I get your point, but I think you make a bit of a negative judgement yourself in there - which can be just as bad. "Oh you must be 'renting' that". Why? Is PCP or financial really such an ugly word??Edited by bob2146 on Sunday 4th March 16:53
FWIW, I know countless multi-millionaires (of which sadly I am not one, ha ha) and all of them use some sort of finance product for their vehicles.

I think for a lot of people £300/400 a month + a strategy for remaining mobile at the end of the deal would be a very commitment. To say 'anyone' can get a brand new car on PCP isn't too much of a stretch, but anything more than a 4 cylinder A4/3 Series BM/Merc C class is not really an option for many.Edited by bob2146 on Sunday 4th March 16:53

Leg . Are u still making the youtube stuff . I enjoyed those . But have you done any recently?
Hi DavidThanks, it was fun to do for a while. I started it just after I sold the software company to keep me busy whilst I decided what I wanted to do next.
It's still up there as is the Facebook page and Instagram stuff but I lost interest to be honest.
I might get back into it at some stage but it'll never be more than an odd video of my cars or what I'm up to racing, track days, road trips or classics wise. I can't be bothered to go to manufacturers etc to get cars to review, feels too much like working!
Ironically, one of the last videos I did, the Boxster comparison video, has had over 120,000 views now. Doh!
Never say never though. Right now I'm looking forward to another season of racing, track days, concourse shows and 4 euro road trips (the latter being by far the highlight of my year). Whether people are interested in those activities and I do videos of them I'm unsure. A bit of the issue is you do something you love and doing videos of it actually gets in the way of just simply enjoying it. Much like videoing an entire holiday instead of enjoying the holiday.
Ultimately I learned that doing social media blogs/vlogs is a job and I don't want a job.
How are you enjoying the Spyder?
Cheers
Rich

I understand how the filming would take the joy out of the drive . I did think you had a nice little presenting style . Friendly and not up yourself with the right level of technical input.
I also like how you really enjoy your life . Many could learn this skill from you!
I love the spyder . Dont get to drive it as much as i would like as busy with work and 3 young kids. I got it new and have Had it 2 years this week . When i drive it i feel like a king . I waited many many years and saved for this car so i deserve it!
Is lovely to drive .feels special .my first ever porsche and my first convertible and it sounds epic!
Back to the PEC next week which is a nice day out.

Try working in the public sector and having a Porsche. When I came out that I'd a boyfriend no one gave a monkeys, but when it came out that I'd a Cayman that was another kettle of fish. I avoid taking it to work unless I have to.
Although, I bought it when I worked for a oil co. and have a number of "how can you afford that" comments. The thing that perplexed me was that most came from people with stuff like A4 2.0 tdi S-Lines. My normal response was to ask what their new car would be worth in 3 years and what deposit the put down on it. Then I'd point out how much money the car cost them before explaining my Cayman R would likely be worth what I paid for it in 3 years making it infinitely cheaper than their bland piece of tedium. And after 3 years it was probably worth more than I paid for it. People don't get bigger pictures.

Lots of people see cars as just another monthly expense like a mobile phone contract or broadband etc. They have an idea in their head of what a new phone would cost per month and they have an idea of how much a new MINI or Audi TT would cost them per month.
They know what THEY can afford and when they see a 911 or Ferrari drive past them they just think in terms of what that car would cost per month......then instantly come to the conclusion that you have money to burn and/or get paid too much!
I remember speaking to a colleague many years ago who was moaning about how little she had left at the end of the month. I pointed out that the coffee and breakfast she was buying every morning on the way into work was probably costing her £4 to £5 a day (£25 a week, £100 a month = probably almost £1000 a year......which is an annual holiday) This was not taking into account the money she spent on lunch every day. She was genuinely shocked and suprised.
Cold hard figures can sometimes be a real eye-opener.

I find this sentence a combination of hilarious, sad and ridiculous...all in one go!Great the idea that (as a society) we have moved on enough for the former to no longer be a 'thing', but owning a nice car now has some sort of stigma attached?? Not sure whether to laugh or...well...I don't know!
FWIW - your story is very similar to that of a good friend of mine...although he was very wary of people knowing about his boyfriend rather than his possessions. That's a generational thing, tho.

Yup, my thoughts also. To be honest I suspect that being the 3rd person to come out in the office was a good part of the reason for no reaction, but when people found out about the car it was much discussed. And on the boyfriend front, my current job is the only one where I've been at all public about that and in previous jobs no one had any idea.Great the idea that (as a society) we have moved on enough for the former to no longer be a 'thing', but owning a nice car now has some sort of stigma attached?? A lot of it comes down to how people prioritise money spend too. I wouldn't dream of spenging 3 figures a month on a Sky package, or thousands a year on cigarettes and nor would I go out every weekend and spend one or two hundred quid in town and yet it's usually the people who do that who can't understand how you can afford a nice car.

Re your last sentence: my standard response was to say that, "I don't drink, I don't smoke and I don't do drugs - cars are my vice. That being said, I wish I did the first 3 instead, as it would be cheaper!". That usually was enough for people to chuckle and sod off.

After chasing after a used Boxster for a few weeks, I’ve now bought a new 718 Cayman. I pick it up on March 1st.
I’m astonished at the response from colleagues and friends. Nobody has said anything complimentary; it’s all a variation on the same theme.
Like it’s anybody’s business...
So you bought a Porsche 718 Cayman and nobody has paid you any compliments. Ahh, didums!! I feel for you, Man!I’m astonished at the response from colleagues and friends. Nobody has said anything complimentary; it’s all a variation on the same theme.

If you really thought it wasn't anybody's business, why did you tell them about your purchase and worse, why the fk have you posted it on here!!??
Maybe try doing something nice for someone else, you'll be complitmented for it and it won't cost you 500 nicker a month!

The OP has posted, on a Porsche forum, about how he was surprised by the negative responses and says nothing about expecting positive ones. I guess you have just proved the point the OP was making.

Was there really any need for that? The OP bought a Porsche, he didn't say he expected compliments he was just surprised at the negative reactions! Are you just another of the "anyone who's got a Porsche must be a dick" crowd?
No, not at all. I'm on my 3rd 911, a 1970 911E, albeit in bits.I apologise to the OP, my comments were a bit strong, but what sort of reaction did he suspect? To the majority of people, this car reeks of ostentation, that the owner is a poseur, a show off - it's a look at me car. I'm not saying that is necessarily my opinion, but that is what people think. You drive one of these and you'll get more insults than praise.

I don't think "people" think what you have said above. I think the odd 'person' with a chip on their shoulder may think those things, but the majority of 'people' are thankfully a lot less aholey.
Or perhaps I just live in a place where people are generally not as jealous of each other!
