I had a friend kick off because I purchased a motorbike ( a 2.5 grand one at that).

People are horrible

I’m sort of the opposite. I’m a 20 year old female who looks quite young for my age anyway and I picked up my new 718 Cayman two months, fully expecting an array of “how can you afford that?” comments, but so far, it’s been mostly positive. I get strangers in supermarket car parks/at petrol pumps/at drive-thrus telling me they love the colour/nice car/nice wheels and so on which always makes my day! I did have some close friends who couldn’t bring themselves to even acknowledge the fact that I’d gotten a new car, and to this day still haven’t said a single word about it. As someone already said above, it seems that people somehow get bitter with someone is doing better than them. It’s sad, really. I love seeing people do well for themselves!

Well done on the car and don’t worry about what your colleagues think - at the end of the day, they’re most likely just wishing the car was theirs!
You’re 20 so you are young! i can’t imagine how much younger you can look? lol

I suppose I only look around 18/19 - and more like 16 without make-up! Doesn’t help that I’m so short, either. So far though no one has been overly surprised that the car is mine. I was expecting a lot of “are you getting a chance to drive your dad’s car?” type comments biggrin

In similar fashion, I had a friend ring me out of the blue and harangue me at length over my then-proposed purchase. Said I already had a nice car and why did I want to do this. Came up with all kinds of reasons why I should rethink. Then he did it again a few days later in person, although in slightly more muted fashion.

I really like the guy so I reasoned that it was simple envy and frustration, and bit my lip.

But I am in my 50s. I can make my own decisions.

And in my view, friends don’t do that. It’s tainted my perception of him, sadly.

As has been said some people are just sts.

My GTS is manual and Saphire, so despite the lack of cylinders, you’re definitely on the right track.

Congratulations enjoy in good health.

That’s unreal. I don’t understand why people can’t just let others do whatever the hell makes them happy. There’s nothing worse than someone who rains on your parade. Totally ruins the experience of a new car/bike purchase when the people around you can’t even be happy for you!

There is no easy way to say to someone you've just bought a new Porsche!

I work in a very large office and I've only told two colleagues about my incoming Cayman. They are both "car people" and are genuinely pleased for me and we chatted when building the spec. I'm not telling the rest of them, as quite frankly, it's none of their business anyway. It's going to be slightly awkward even with some of my close-ish family.

There is a colleague though who has a 987 Boxster, and wears Porsche cufflinks, so I might catch up with him at some point. I am certainly not going to announce it on FB though!

Anyway, congratulations OP. Your Cayman looks great and I'm sure you'll put many happy miles under the wheels.

Buy new friends smile. Only joking. Seriously. If they have an issue with your purchase. They are not friends just green eyed monsters.
I guess I am lucky enough to have an eclectic mix of friends that there has never been any jealousy between us. Must be over 40 people.
If we heard that one of us had just bought a McLaren F1 it would be. When can we see it, here it or drive it. I get a kick out of it. We all do. Success in this country appears to be frowned upon in many quarters.
That said only one of my customers. A car guy who I have known for over 25 years has seen what I own. I would not share that information in truth with any other customer.

No worries, same reactions when I picked my CGTS three yrs ago, from "always thought Porsche owners are badass" to "Do you use it to attract blonde girls" to "you could have bought an house with that money".

Many people just don't get the passion for sportscars.

Enjoy and tell them to f**k off

I’m thinking of telling people I’m a meth dealer. I thought I’d share a few pics of the car with like-minded folk. Hope you like them; it makes me insanely happy, and this next week is going to take forever!
Congrats - that looks very nice - colour works very well
Manual too - awesome

Sorry to hijack but I feel like having a rant. Being 28 and my fiance being 27 we try and keep things on the down low. I do hate consciously lying about and feeling embarrassed to tell people what we own and having to downplay our achievements. Ultimately we work round the clock so that people can make backhanded compliments.

Its 23.13 and Im still working! if only half of the posers knew what it takes...

You shouldn’t have to downplay your success. There’s people out there who seem to think that anyone with a nice car has had it handed to them on a plate, but the reality is that we have these cars because we’ve worked our asses off in order to attain them. There will always be jealous people out there who don’t have the drive and determination to work hard for something themselves and that’s why they become bitter about it, but that shouldn’t take away your own pride.

Enjoy the car(s), you deserve to!

Have you read Rudyard Kipling's poem 'If'?

What is it you do out of interest. Fwiw when I got my 996 carrera at 24 a few people were surprised that it was so cheap to buy and insurance. Had a few compliments on it. When I replaced it with a 996 turbo at 27 4 years ago just before I had my daughter nobody said anything despite it being double the price. Now when I unload both my kids out the back I just get funny looks with a very occasional compliment. There is a fair bit of acknowledgement from other Porsche owners going in the other direction (only if they are in the 'sportier'porsches, for some reason madam, cayenne and panamera drivers don't wave). I live up north the were people are friendlybiggrin.

I don’t know about that, I’m one to downplay things and possibly cover up things to friends of mine that are less fortunate than me.

Somebody finding out you have a new Porsche and being a di*k about it is one thing but I think the bigger di*k is the one that goes around telling people who aren’t in a position to buy a nice car about their new Porsche before they’ve even taken delivery!

Well done indeed but to be fair, how does anyone afford a new Cayman at 20?! Were you working since you were ten? hehe
