Oh - for God's sake give it a rest ! I haven't looked at this thread for a few weeks and people are STILL re-gurgitating the same old comments. You don't like the sound of the 718 FINE don't bloody buy one then ! who cares - REALLY - and believe me I really couldn't give a toss. Yes I have a 718 and yes I enjoy it That is all that is important to me.
Do you also consciously switch over to TV programmes you dislike?

I bet you do. And then you write in to the BBC to complain?

I saw a thread yesterday by a guy, moose?, running an old 987 over 100k miles and I take my hat off, that’s got to be expensive, fixing stuff all the time with all the maintenance kind of turns me off the classics route unfortunately. That said the last of the flat sixes will always have a value no doubt.
Any more expensive than swapping in your 100k miler and adding another £40-50k on top to get you back in a new car?

And repeat...

Wow, don’t look at it then, its not compulsory !

Ps its not just about the sound, its also about the power delivery, lag, overrun, etc...... but given the sound is pretty bad that just takes the focus as its hard to get past to the actual drive.

And who cares are those people who may be at some point considering buying a 718 eg a 981 owner looking to change or as the 718 enter they second hand market those that are not looking for a new car ie if this thread gives them food for thought to not default to the assumption that newer =better then that is great. They can then try both and decide which suits them best.

I’m sure you would support someone making an informed decision of all options. I think the overlap in pricing between 718 and 981 will happen a lot quicker than normal and so the choice will be more valid than ever.

My wife, who is a petrol head, commented on the 718s she heard going round PEC as "sounding like their engines are broken". biggrin

Her 4-cylinder mk3 Focus RS has a much more pleasing sound to our ears, and I would take one of those over a 718 if I had to have a turbo engined car. It's cheaper, has a superb 4WD system and is a hoot too drive!

Ford RS owners also seem much less sensitive to adverse comments on their car as they don't take it personally...
I looked at an RS for my daily but was told without a tracksuit and Staffy I didn’t meet Ford’s stringent buyer criteria frown

You want to think less about image and more about having a car that's fun to drive wink

Mrs Twinfan's is Nitrous Blue and the amount of people who come up to either of us to ask about it is crazy - it's a universally loved motor!

That is true.

Ford apparently make some very good hot hatches, but the 'boy racer' 'Max Power' image, does not appeal to a lot of people. Golf Gti/R and Renaultsport do that element better.

Golf R is very boring - one for granddad hot hatch fans. The Ford is quite restrained, especially compared to the Honda Civic Type-R!

Out of interest is the PDK any different in the 718 ? Some appear to say it’s improved, in my 981 it can be a bit ‘clunky’ sometimes getting into gear from cold. I wondered if they’ve refined it in the latest version. I know the PCM is meant to be vastly better.
I noticed a small improvement changing from 1st to 2nd. Others say that changes on the 981 in Sport+ can be jerky (I haven't got sport chrono so can't say) However I'd never use Sport+ on the road in a 718 (I'd use manual) so iany improvements in that area are pretty academic to me.

A Golf R is dull

My Golf 3 door Manual Clubsport is an amazing car though, I am a hot hatch fan boy and it's up there with my old Clio Trophy.

Had a little ding with an RS yesterday, it's a nice car ruined by the 5 door dad look lol A hot hatch has to have 3 doors that's a given !!

Ignore the doors - the 4WD system and therefore the handling is fantastic. It's not a track car for sure, but as a point and squirt road car it's awesome biggrin

Yes of course I switch off programmes I don't like. That's the beauty of a TV remote ! But no I don't complain about them and I know other people will like/watch them. That is my whole point - if you don't like/want a 718 fine - why spend time telling everyone about it. I think I'll now "switch off" this thread for another few weeks ! Best wishes all (981 ers and 718 ers) !!

Why another few weeks? Do you revisited those programs you don't like after a few weeks to see if you still dislike them?

The very title of this threat tells you what you're going to get. It delivers what it says on the tin. If you're that unhappy about it.... Take it up with Bob wink

I could not do 5 doors sorry, and 4WD, no thanks. Golf nailed the CS, it's so much more than the GTi it's shocking. one of my all time fav cars :-)
I use it just about every day, no need for a Porsche, racked up 14k miles in it already.

It’s called clutching at straws.

I’ve had 2 x 987 Boxsters, a 987/2 Cayman S, and after two years in a 997/2 and we’ve had our 981 BGTS for three years now. Every generation has been a step forward, except for the switch from six to four cylinders which was not done to make 981 a better car it was done simply to comply with EU tree-huggers to reduce corporate CO2 levels.
yep that switch to EPS was a BIG step forward !!!! I'll keep my 2 987.2 cars thanks.

If you mean EPS from hydraulic steering, as above I’ve had cars with both and the deficit of EPS is exaggerated IMVHO.

not imo hence why I keep what I keep.

The 718 GTS is a better car than the 981 GTS because the tech is better, the steering is better, the brakes are better the chassis is better the car is a LOT faster.

do you want a 718 , nope, do I want a 981, nope.

I completely agree. It's arguably not as good as a hydraulic system but it's not exactly unworthy of being fitted to a car!
