A turbo 6 would have been the best of both worlds. I've no idea whether Porsche's remarks regarding being able to fit one in the 718 are true. Emissions aside, I do firmly believe the 4 gave them a means to draw a line between 718 and 911.

Agreed. A combination of factors that led them to the F4T - historic 718 branding, drawing a line between Caysters and the 911, group emissions, market demands etc.

Perhaps this is a straw man defence?

It won’t take you long to find comments like “worst Porsche ever” and “worst engine in the world”.

Also comments which experience allows me to refute quite completely such as “the turbo lag is awful”
Unless I missed something, I haven't seen anyone say either of those things. Can you find the posts for us?

As someone already pointed out, it's about reducing cubic capacity for the Chinese market, and 4 cylinders keeps that low. It is impressive to me they are able to get 300+ bhp out of the turbo four, but I agree it certainly takes away some of the character. Not much we can do about it really. It is the way things are going, I doubt Porsche wanted to do it either. I would agree the OP may have a point about some of this however, comments about lights and airvents are pure whinging IMO.

I've just said I don't like the re-styled air vents when I've spoken about other points on the car - why is that whinging???

I don’t think there is any doubt that porsche did not go small block turbo other than to meet emissions and legislation in certain key markets at the expense of there desired development path.

What is such a shame is that other manufacturers seem to have achieved that with a better engine. They where very much ahead of the game with the engine they had, they are now in the pack, a bit behind it with the engine made up by the rest of the package being so good.

Agreed. China is an attractive, burgeoning market and cracking that comes with it's limitations. It's the same in my line of work. For all the benefits of turbo charging, I'd rather it was a 6, I'd imagine most 718 owners would agree, but like you said, it is was it is. There's not much we can do about it.

But we can help inform potential buyers that there are genuine choices and not just assume that newer = better which to me is the point of this thread ;-)

Yes, you have missed something! From this,
probably quite a lot.

I might be sad enough to argue with you lot but I’m not sad enough to do your reconciling.

Why is that whingeing? It’s what expressing an opinion! FWIW I also prefer the integration of vents and sport chrono on 981 - that is an opinion, hardly whingeing! If I said that I preferred 718’s steering wheel to the one on 981 (I do) would that also be whingeing? We really are clutching at straws now to try and make some kind of point scoring point!

Personally anti 981ers don’t bother me in the slightest. I get their angle. Where they are coming from, easy speed, numbers, less work to get ‘on it’ etc. I love that it’s not easy performance, that I have to work for it, work the engine to get the rewards. I’ve had turbo cars and nah... fast though they were... left me cold. The 718 left me cold.

It seems to me the correction you feel you need to make is our preference... why in the hell would not want a 718. Do you feel you need to open our eyes?
Would one of the fantastical anti 718 things be us not seeing it, with the tech and additional performance it brings, as the better car?
Y’know, how can they not see it’s faster, it must be better....
I think you’re moving in to strange realms now pal.

People say daft things about a car. I point out they’ve said a daft thing about a car. Easy.
We’re moving in the same realms Jam, this thread. You’ve bought a car you love, which is great... genuinely if my neighbour bought a 718 I’d be interested and happy for him.
Being happy with your purchase isn’t enough for you though... you can’t help taking others disliking certain certain elements of the car personally. Get over it pal... it really doesn’t matter wink

Forgive my candid post, but to me it comes across as nitpicking. I personally don't give a flying fk about air vents but ok some people are really into their design stuff. That said we don't like the engine and I'm no 718 lover but if you read some of the comments on here you'd think the F6 was the holy grail of engine manufacture and the F4T is a total piece of tosh. Then you get other people piling in talking BS about lights and switches and whatever else they can come up with to criticise because they just don't like the engine change. It's a Porsche, it may lack finesse now but I'd imagine it will get the job done with clinical precision. Thank fk it's not a VW engine is all I can say, because if they start harmonising on that it's over, I fecking hate the Audi TT but that's what you'll get. IMO of course. Personally I would like some mid range torque now as I find the 2.7 a bit lacking, just not from an F4. And there's guys on another thread here complaining their GT3s are too fast, first world problems eh !

I’d do the same for a 981. *thumbs up*

Yes, that's a fair point. I guess a buyer will go either way, much as I did.

It’s a fecking air vent. As long as it blows air into the cabin do people really care? To be honest they’ll probably be an option soon anyway as everything else seems to be on these cars. I mean climate control should really be standard, soon vents and interior lighting will probably be extras too. If only we could specify those extra cylinders as well.

Yep, I care, hence me mentioning it.

You're right about climate - I can't believe it's a cost option.

In BE57JAM's defence I think he was paraphrasing the general sentiment of what is now a 74 page thread! I've certainly read most of it and don't think he is a million miles off the mark!
