Perhaps this is a straw man defence?
It won’t take you long to find comments like “worst Porsche ever” and “worst engine in the world”.
Also comments which experience allows me to refute quite completely such as “the turbo lag is awful”
Unless I missed something, I haven't seen anyone say either of those things. Can you find the posts for us? It won’t take you long to find comments like “worst Porsche ever” and “worst engine in the world”.
Also comments which experience allows me to refute quite completely such as “the turbo lag is awful”

A turbo 6 would have been the best of both worlds. I've no idea whether Porsche's remarks regarding being able to fit one in the 718 are true. Emissions aside, I do firmly believe the 4 gave them a means to draw a line between 718 and 911.
As someone already pointed out, it's about reducing cubic capacity for the Chinese market, and 4 cylinders keeps that low. It is impressive to me they are able to get 300+ bhp out of the turbo four, but I agree it certainly takes away some of the character. Not much we can do about it really. It is the way things are going, I doubt Porsche wanted to do it either. I would agree the OP may have a point about some of this however, comments about lights and airvents are pure whinging IMO.Schmed said:

I don’t think there is any doubt that porsche did not go small block turbo other than to meet emissions and legislation in certain key markets at the expense of there desired development path. What is such a shame is that other manufacturers seem to have achieved that with a better engine. They where very much ahead of the game with the engine they had, they are now in the pack, a bit behind it with the engine made up by the rest of the package being so good.

Agreed. China is an attractive, burgeoning market and cracking that comes with it's limitations. It's the same in my line of work. For all the benefits of turbo charging, I'd rather it was a 6, I'd imagine most 718 owners would agree, but like you said, it is was it is. There's not much we can do about it.Schmed said:

Why is that whingeing? It’s what expressing an opinion! FWIW I also prefer the integration of vents and sport chrono on 981 - that is an opinion, hardly whingeing! If I said that I preferred 718’s steering wheel to the one on 981 (I do) would that also be whingeing? We really are clutching at straws now to try and make some kind of point scoring point!Edited by dreamcar on Wednesday 2nd May 18:27

Personally anti 981ers don’t bother me in the slightest. I get their angle. Where they are coming from, easy speed, numbers, less work to get ‘on it’ etc. I love that it’s not easy performance, that I have to work for it, work the engine to get the rewards. I’ve had turbo cars and nah... fast though they were... left me cold. The 718 left me cold.
It seems to me the correction you feel you need to make is our preference... why in the hell would not want a 718. Do you feel you need to open our eyes?
Would one of the fantastical anti 718 things be us not seeing it, with the tech and additional performance it brings, as the better car?
Y’know, how can they not see it’s faster, it must be better....
I think you’re moving in to strange realms now pal. It seems to me the correction you feel you need to make is our preference... why in the hell would not want a 718. Do you feel you need to open our eyes?

People say daft things about a car. I point out they’ve said a daft thing about a car. Easy.
Being happy with your purchase isn’t enough for you though... you can’t help taking others disliking certain certain elements of the car personally. Get over it pal... it really doesn’t matter

I've just said I don't like the re-styled air vents when I've spoken about other points on the car - why is that whinging???Twinfan said:

Forgive my candid post, but to me it comes across as nitpicking.
I call it expressing an opinion on a discussion forum. They look bloody awful!Edited by anonymous-user on Wednesday 2nd May 20:14

So, nobody did actually say what you wrote. Yet another straw man argument from you.
In BE57JAM's defence I think he was paraphrasing the general sentiment of what is now a 74 page thread! I've certainly read most of it and don't think he is a million miles off the mark! Gassing Station | Boxster/Cayman | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
