718 Sound and Constant Whinging !

So, with the next Caysters being all electric will any 987/981/718 owners be moving into one?
No brainer! lots of extra low end torque leading to much better performance; the purists will turn their noses up but they can keep their dinosaur forced induction engines. People might not like the washing machine on a spin cycle sound, but they're all wrong because I love it.neil1jnr said:
Spent the day reading through 90% of this thread, quiet funny at times but good points from both sides (It's more of a 981 vs 718 debate really is it).
I've never driven a 718 so I can't comment. I've driven x 2 older Cayman S's and they were lovely to drive and sounded incredible, however they felt slow and being manuals the gear ratios were awful (I prefer FI unless it's a NA screamer with good close gear ratios!).
I think if I were in the market for a Cayman (or similar), then in years gone by, the Cayman (with PDK) would have been my natural choice, reason being that on engine/exhaust note alone from the 6 cylinders is so exotic and distinctively Porsche. However, I don't think I could make the decision now as the 718 is 4 cylinder, but I have not heard one in the flesh so it may be that I like that 4 cylinder burble even more, being a huge fan of Subaru's boxer engine exhaust note.
Those saying that 718 buyers should have considered the older 981 is a bit daft as it is an older car an it's likely buyers of the 718 want a new car and want the newest version of the Cayman. Nobody will argue the fact that both cars are probably better than most of Porsche's rivals as an all rounder sports car but if it was my money, I'd probably take the 718. It's measurably better, it looks better (IMO) and it may or may not be a better drivers car (I don't know) and it may or may not sound better (subjective). Although the Porsche 6 cylinders are brilliant, I think the 4 cylinder with more torque will be just better day to day. Personally for me I think the Cayman felt a bit flat and slow for it's engine size when comparing to a similar vintage NA 911.

Personally I think it's worth potential buyers trying a 981 and 718 unless they want / need a new car. The driving experience is fundamentally different to be worth trying both and not just assuming the newer car is better.

“It’s marvellous, last of the naturally aspirated F6s, a definite classic. Value never goes down, only goes up. And let me tell you about the sound! The glorious sound! You dont even scrape the nose in a car park, it’s just the best thing ever, it’ll never, ever depreciate !”Personally I think it's worth potential buyers trying a 981 and 718 unless they want / need a new car. I know owners like their cars, but it appears Porsche owners here are more susceptible than most to posting embellishments about them than anyone else. Sure talk up your cars, but what an absolute pile of tosh are many of the comments.
I owned a 981 for 4 years, an ok car. But not the best, no no not by a long shot. I now own a 718, read some of the threads on here and it sounds like a tractor. Power delivery is imprecise. Terrible just terrible all this “progress”, I must be insane trading the last of the F6s for emissions driven forced induction, must need my head examined, some even traded back the other way for an older car!
Well let me tell you the truth, having actually owned each one, and stripping through the considerable amount of “embellishment” written about it on here. The 718 is a massively improved car. The performance vs my old 2.7 is insane, the torque is now so low down it gives just crazy amounts of acceleration. But what about the sound? Well what an absolute crock of st that debate was, a 100 pages of total nonsense written in some (mainly this) thread(s). “Agricultural”, “diesel”, “Subaru” and so on. Again just utter rubbish, makes me wonder if most of the posters actually own the cars they say they do.
Well more to follow on my owner’s thread in readers’ cars, but don’t believe me just go try one for yourself. Don’t believe the die hards on here, the 718 is a massive step forward imo, reading some threads made me very nervous about the upgrade. In the end, it turns out a lot of rubbish had been written about it for fun or whatever. It’s not the the end of the world, it’s progress!

Moved from 981 to 718...... 718 much better in every way. Won't bore you with previous comments, but, please drive one for more than a spin around the block, befor repeating the views of aemchair pilots. I am a daily driver of one for circa 20k miles per year and have lived with both.
So, seriously, how many complaining have actually driven one for a long perioud?
781 and 981 = chalk and cheese. Over to the dreamers.

Well at least two of us bought a 718 after owning a 981 and ended up selling them to get back into a 981 .... were we wrong to hanker after a Flat 6 again? No. Just like you’re not wrong to prefer a 718.So, seriously, how many complaining have actually driven one for a long perioud?

I think that is extremely unlikely, mild hybrid maybe.
I read yesterday it had been confirmed, within 5 years?Solar panels on roof, own electricity, free motoring!!
The whine will replace the 6cyl scream.
I like the idea of solar panels on the roof though!!

I’m surprised you didn’t like the steering or info-tech? Brakes are great on the S too.dreamcar said:
Won’t be the “next Cayster” then. All new model due probably in 18 months time or less (718 is merely a facelifted 981 with new engines). I don’t think “the whine will replace the 6 cyl scream” either as sadly I think the range will be stuck with the flat four turbo.

On the roof of the house I meant! Charge the car up, off you go!I like the idea of solar panels on the roof though!!

The "all electric Cayster" thread is on here somewhere. Member was "told for sure" by some Porsche big-wig wannabe.
Back on PH after a long time away so trawling through topics.
Having owned a 1999 Boxster years ago, I loved the howl from the 6 above 5000rpm. It was my first proper sports car and made me smile every time I drove it. 2 months ago I decided to test the 718 GTS and fell in love again. So I bought one. The driving dynamics are sublime IMO, and at no time did I think the exhaust note was bad. In fact I loved it! in sport mode or sport+ it crackles and bangs on the overrun and overall makes a distinctively unique entertaining sound. I guess it's going to be like Marmite for most people. I bought it for the driving dynamics, the engineering and the looks -
