OK, I've only had it for five days, but my 718 Cayman is an amazing car that I cannot get enough of. It's my first Porsche, and it will not be my last. It's enjoyable at any speed, the manual gearbox is by far the best I've ever experienced, the quality of the engineering seeps out of its pores and it sounds wonderful. The whole experience is just so exciting.

The novelty factor will inevitably diminish in time, but I completely understand the passion for these cars.

Careful, don't want to stir the wrath of the PH Dinosaurs wink Seriously though congrats. All being well I pick up my 718 Cayman on Weds and am really looking forward to it. I have had each generation of Cayman including a 981 GTS and am still like a kid at Christmas!

The weather has been so dismal that I haven't taken any fresh pics since the morning I picked it up, but I thought you might like to see the snaps from about 0730 last Thursday when I battled through the Giant Snowb@stard to get to the dealer. They made it feel like a very special occasion. The sales exec had the sign laminated and it's now stuck to my fridge door.

I was in Leicester OPC today for some sundry parts for my 996 and was sat in the showroom for a while next to a cayman and they are stunningly beautiful. It did make me feel like being in the toy shop as a kid!

Roll on nicer weather and extreme driving enjoyment!!

Adam the parts guy was super helpful too, so all in all a pleasent visit.

Regards
Ian

Think you've nailed it there - whatever it is that makes toys so special as a kid is distilled and concentrated into the car smile

Funnily enough, someone at work asked if I was trying to relive my childhood and having a midlife crisis. I said no, it would be a crisis if I was driving a clapped-out people carrier.

It is always a special occasion when picking a brand new car up from a dealer. Picking a brand new VW Caddy up for my foreman. Although they had it covered etc did not I am sure bring quite the same emotion as collecting your Porsche. Enjoy smile

After 28 months in my 981 the novelty still hasn't worn off.

I had my mid-life crisis 15 years ago with a beautiful DB7, but function didn't live up to form and the novelty soon wore off after wet feet and low-loaders.

You'll hopefully find as I have so far, that the Cayman is a keeper.

Hey thanks for all the kind words folks.

The roads have largely dried out round here, and I’ve been out all day. The handling and pace of the car are of such a higher order than anything else I’ve experienced. I love this car.

Now the roads have dried out a bit I’m actually working from home tomorrow so I can go on a lunchtime hoon without getting stuck in the commuter traffic.

Can’t wait biggrin

Are you being a good boy and not exceeding 4K RPM for the first 1000 miles?

Picked mine up today. My dealer said no need to run in just be a little sympathetic and make sure you warm it up fully before enjoying it!

Erm.... not exactly... smile

The dealer was adamant I didn’t need to worry about it, despite what the book says. I’ve been letting it warm up and have avoided really caning it, but I’ve been extending it beyond 4k.

You enjoying your first Porsche as much as I am?

It's 4000 RPM for the first 1865 miles (3000 km) according to the manual. Got to make sure it's ok for its next keeper.

wink There are many theories on "running in" my view is that it is an outdated practice from the days when tolerances of parts were much different and everything was hand built. There is also a school of thought that the engine will loosen up and end up more responsive if used to full potential from the outset.

I tend to take a bit of a middle ground on this.... make sure the oil is up to temp (do that anyway regardless of miles) then drive enthusiastically but not taking it to the red line or using full throttle for prolonged periods.
