Will check with my local OPC on this one, and feed back... wink
When mine went in for its MOT, 111 point check, and extended warranty I asked if I should remove the cam from the screen (for MOT rules) and the OPC asked if it was hard-wired as this would be a problem with the warranty extension. I said no, it's plugged into the 12v socket and they were fine with this, as were they with full Zunsport grilles all round.

But as always, different OPCs will tell you different things!
OK..... So formal answer from my OPC is “no-hardwiring”, but informally just been told they can be “flexible”.... wink As always with these things, it comes down to individual OPCs, and your relationship with them.....

I guess if anyone is worried about it, they can simply un-install prior to Service/Warranty work.... wink
Yeah - thats fair enough.

SwimFinz - yeah - the wiring fuse layout will be the same - Piggy back fuse holder is also a good tip - but you need very low profile ones or you won't get the fuse cover back on.
Also little bit of care required when pulling of the carpet trim cover around the fuse box as there is a plastic prong that sticks out - it helps with locating the trim in place.. anyway its vulnerable, so there is a technique to pulling the trim out.
There are a couple of guides around which i'd have to dig out few which number fuses to use.. i think i used horn and perm feed and climate control as switchable? for ground there is a naked bolt you can use down in that same area.
https://youtu.be/YHJaFIrSglY - this is for a Macan - but i followed the principles in this video and this thread from P9 - http://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-and-boxster-ele...

I haven't refitted the kit to my GT4 thus far - as i don't use this car daily and it doesn't tend to get left for long periods of time unattended - I'm usually on a drive or at event and the car is the focus.
My 981 GTS was my daily so was parked up in stations and airport carparks - as i often work abroad - so was more necessary then.

also check out this previous discussion - some people just run to the 12v power in the glove box - no hardwiring... but then to don't get parking mode. or if you're happy to carry a battery pack around and management of that you have that option as aforementioned. in my experience hardwiring with the PmP was install and forget.

BlackVue publish install costs on their website.
For example - £84 for front camera and Power Magic Pro (install only).

How did you get on with the Blackvue? I've been on dashcamtalk and all roads lead to the Viofo A119 on there but I don't think it's wedge shape and size would fit discretely behind the rear view mirror. I prefer the discrete shape and size of the Blackvue models and there is a budget model called the Blueskysea B1W which is quite small.

I don't know if a 2 camera setup would be of any benefit as fitting it on the rear hatch seems like a lot of hassle and as there is no wiper, I'm not convinced I would see anything out of the rear camera in UK winter weather.

Can anyone confirm or deny if the 12v sockets shut down after 30 minutes as I've had conflicting information.

My 981 12v sockets power off after 30+ minutes. I checked.

B1W is one I'd consider if I didn't have the Viofo A119 fitted.

Although visible here, you really can't notice it from any distance...

Thanks. I'm away at work so I've got a couple more weeks of endless researching into dashcams before I click the 'Buy' button.
I take it that's a right angled adapter on your A119?

Yes, right angled adapter off ebay. Make sure it's the right way round!

If you join dashcamtalk.com, then message Vicky at estore009, she may well send you a voucher code for B1W or 119 for Amazon UK as she's one of the Chinese distributors for both (genuine ones!).

Also, that forum is the prime source of info. Many of the manufacturers post there with info, updates, problem solving. Viofo is always there answering questions. This is crucial if you're not sure what you're doing. Have a good browse there. There may be new arrivals since I fitted mine.

The problem is, I've read a lot of conflicting information on hard wiring and it affecting your warranty. There are numerous comments on the porscheclubgb and macanowners forums for starters.

I have ordered the B1W to try it out (before noticing the post about discount codes!) so I'll see how I get on. It was only fifty quid.

I connected up my B1W today and thought I had cracked it until I turned my (DAB) radio on. As soon as the dashcam is powered up, it interferes with the DAB resulting in a broken signal at best and absolutely nothing at worst. That's the end of that particular experiment then!!

Excellent description TDT— thanks....!!

How did you determine which feeds were constant, as opposed to ignition dependent...?? (Excuse my ignorance on this one— I’m about as far from an electrician as you can get....!!). I imagine the constant feed on your car will be identical to that on my GT4, as the fuse box wiring on all 981 must be pretty much the same....
Buy an inexpensive circuit tester at a hardware store (around USD$10). Clamp the thing to ground and stick the end of probe in an empty slot with ignition off. If the light on probe goes on, you've found constant power. If it doesn't, switch on ignition and try again. If light goes on, you've found accessory power. I'd find constant power before I turned on the ignition, just because it's annoying to wait and be sure the ignition has timed out to try again for constant. On US 2017 Cayman S, I used the slot for rear wiper (which I don't have) for accessory power (it's row D, slot 1 on mine) and there were two slots (B7 and B9 that were unused and both tested positive for constant power. I think I used B7, but presumably either would work. Good luck. I'd still get the tester and confirm. It's work the few bucks IMHO.

Blackvue DR650 front and rear in my 987.2. Paid to have it fitted but to be honest it’s an easy DIY. Realised this after the fact. Takes a tap off a permanant live feed in fuse box. I’ve got the power magic pro box set to go off after 6 hours or 12v. Gives me parking surveillance. Looks really neat installed.

Rear camera was a challenge as no where to stick it to on 987 (tailgate means loose wires) so made a black bracket that comes down from seal and mounts to interior roof behind tailgate. Looks really neat.

Just have to practice the art of swallowing the disc in event it gets used against me biggrin

You can hold the WiFi button down for 10 seconds or so and it will format the card.

I recently installed a Thinkware F770 hard wired into my audi. I bought because it had lots of features. As you were asking about them I thought I'd reply.
If you think you want the lane departure warning system technology in this one....you probably don't. It works really well i.e. it beeps literally every time you cross the white line, which very quickly gets annoying. I think that tech only works if its built into the car ...i.e. I think it should only beep if you aren't indicating in that direction. The speed camera warnings work well and it records when you are parked with a nice feature that stops recording when battery gets below a certain level. It fixes to the windscreen on a removable bracket and I have a second hard wiring kit so I will be setting that up in the 981 so I can switch it in and out as needed quite easily...if that's something you are after. Hope that helps.

. . . I was able to removed it pretty easily too... just heated up the windscreen with a hairdryer to loosen the adhesive patch.
Pulled out all the wiring - no problem . . .

admitting to owning/using a hair-dryer is the why Boxster drivers have such a bad rep :-( I think you should be banned lol

Anyone got any tips for fitting a rear camera and in particular, removing any trim? I've had a quick look at the back of the car and can't see any obvious way to run the cable to the front.

I've always wondered what would happen if you had an accident, could the police seize the footage as evidence? Even if the accident was completely non-fault, I'm sure some of us would have moments of spirited driving recorded on there...

Or what if the Police stops you, could he say excuse me sir, I see you have a dashcam, I'd like to review the footage.

Is there an element of potentially shooting oneself in the foot by having a dashcam?
Dashcams are generally a good thing to have and can cover your back in all sorts of ways but on the flipside also provide evidence if you've been a naughty boy speeding.Police can seize the device if they think it has recorded an offence/accident etc and one thing to bear in mind if the police are involved for whatever reason never be tempted to pull the SD card and erase certain files as you'll be 'tampering with evidence' and in alot of trouble!

I have the blackview DR750 2channel. You don’t want to mount the rear camera on the tailgate as the routing for the wires is a nightmare. It’s easier to mount on the headliner.

I found a YouTube video from an American dashcam and ICE installer who showed they made a bracket for a 987 rear camera as the wire routing issue is a pain. I did the same and made a bracket. You don’t need to remove any headliner or trim as you can poke the camera wire inside the gaps.

On the 987 the rear camera wire routes inside the plastic piece that goes all the way around over the door area and drops down the A pillar to the fuse box. The front cam wire tucks inside the front section and ends up joint the same route down the A pillar. I don’t know if 718s have similar construction. It’s all very easy and zero wires or lifted trim. The only visible bit of wire is naturally the tiny section where it sprouts from the cams.

Re bracket for the rear....

Initially I tried using the supplied double sided tape and sticking the rear cam directly to the headlining. Worked for a few months then kept falling off. So I bought a strip of very thin aluminium about an inch wide from B and Q. You want the stuff so thin you can bend it with your fingers. You don’t need anything heavy as the camera weighs nothing.

I cut it to perhaps 4 inches long then wrapped in matt black tape. I folded it with a 90 degree bend about 2/3rds along its length. On the longer end end I then folded a section of just under a cm over on itself. I then lifted up the tailgate and inserted this folded bit over the edge of the headliner. The bracket then followed the contours of liner and I stuck the camera onto the bracket. My wires run inside the trim so you can’t see them.

All sounds complex and badly explained, but it only took ten/fifteen mins of fiddling. I’ll try and take a pic.

Top post. Was going to only put a front facing camera and not go through the hassle of the rear. But doesn't sound too bad .
